Movies are often based on historical events. However many times Hollywood takes liberties with the facts to create dramatic scenes

In some cases, when a particular movie becomes popular, Hollywood’s version of the become the accepted version.

This paper gives you the chance to explore the historical background of your favorite movie.

You may choose any movie whose subject matter is within the time periods covered in this class.
Once you have watched it, pick 3-5 specific (no less than 3 and no more than 5) facts that the movie presents and analyze them for their historical accuracy.

Your analysis could include such topics as the clothes of the time period (Were they accurate?), the roles of the female characters (Would the character really have acted the way they did?), factual errors such as laws that were in effect in the movie that were not in effect in actual history (EX: Portraying women voting in 1860 when women did not get the right to vote nationally until 1920).

Timeline

Part 1: Create a timeline in Microsoft Word that covers at least four major events that defined the 1960s.

Part 2: Write a brief, 300–500 word commentary that explains how each of these four events that you have mentioned in your timeline is interrelated. In this commentary, you may write about how one event led into the next, and so on, or you may write about how one very significant event led to the other three. The way that you describe the interrelatedness of these events is up to you, but you must demonstrate that you understand how the events are interconnected. The commentary must be formatted using APA style.

Renaissance in Italy

Answer these questions in as much detail as possible. Be specific with your answers.
Your answers should cover who, what, when, where and then go beyond. All the work must be your own!

What factors inspired the beginning of the Renaissance in Italy? What physical and material factors made the Renaissance possible? What new perceptions about humankind and its role in the world emerged from this movement? How can it be seen as a clear break from the culture of the Middle Ages?

Live -Tweets

Live-tweet the moon landing in no more than six tweets. In these tweets you must not only announce what is happening as the first Americans landed on the moon, you must also place the moon landing in its historical and political context. For each “tweet,” provide a 144-character or less statement of what is happening as the race to the moon comes to a conclusion. You may also include “hashtags” as long as you stay within the 144-character limit for each tweet. Before you start, you may want to search online for an example of how others have live-tweeted current events.

To determine the character count of each tweet, you may need to create the tweet in Microsoft Word because it provides a character count next to the word count.

Discussion Question

each answer should be 100-150 words

1. What TV characters perform the African American “diva” stereotype? What TV characters perform the “black lady” stereotype? Explain how they conform to the stereotypes.

2. Consider Springer’s critique of postfeminist, post-civil rights discourses about reality TV’s depictions of black women – can you think of any TV show (reality or fiction) that portrays black women in non-stereotypical ways (not as “divas” and not as “black ladies”)?

3. The examples that Cartier gives of “future texts” of black women in popular media are still stuck within a narrow spectrum of possible representations – Minaj as a “liberated” or empowered artist who is still a hypersexual figure, Olivia Pope as a “respectable mistress” to a powerful white man. What do you think will have to happen in order for popular black female media figures to represent what Cartier calls a “wider spectrum”? What would that “wider spectrum” of possible black female representations look like?

4. Does Gray’s essay from the late 1980s still ring true for you today? Why or why not — or, which parts of his essay still seem like accurate descriptions of media representations of African Americans today, and which seem outdated?

5. What’s an example of a TV show in which a black male actor gets to play a “man” (his character adheres to well-known codes of masculine conduct, making the character stable and legible) while a black female actor plays a character who is a cipher? Do you think that, with the rise of African American woman-led series such as Empire and Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder (among others), that this distinction no longer holds? Today, are African American female characters on TV more legible and defined, and African American male characters on TV more like ciphers?

* Please respond to the following prompts.

1) Considering the essay “Stop Babysitting College Students”, do you see any argumentative inconsistencies or logical fallacies? Hint: Think about the author’s examples, comparisons, questions, etc. Use specific examples from the essay, and commentary from Chapter Two addressing logical fallacies, to react to the essay and support your assertion(s).

2) Reflect on your daily experience and exposure to logical fallacies – think about essays, news articles, editorials, advertising, junk mail, television commercials, etc. Please provide examples of logical fallacies you have confronted and discuss how approaching arguments as a critical thinker better equips us to negotiate the variety of texts we’re exposed to on a daily basis. Hint: To refresh your memory from the reading, and to help assist you in developing your examples, take a look at the “Examples of…” section following each discussion on logical fallacies.
