Lars von Trier, Dogville, 2003 – film and reading responses

(Lars von Trier, Dogville, 2003)
Film and Reading Responses

Prompt for your first Film Journal entry:

In his seminal publication Theory of Film, Siegfried Kracauer discusses storytelling in relation to cinema and theater. Significantly, he writes, “Film not only transcends human interaction but resembles the novel, modern or not, in that it tends to render transient impressions and relationships which are denied to the stage.” (219) To what extent, does Lars von Trier’s Dogville (2003)—keeping in mind what you might know or learn about von Trier’s approach to filmmaking in advance of writing your text—uphold this idea? In what way does his filmmaking approach “render transient impressions and relationships which are denied to the stage” (in terms of the types of shots, blocking of actors (their positioning in relation to the camera, props, and other actors), etc). Your journal entry should focus less on the film’s plot than on the way that Lars von Trier engages with (and diverges from) the conventions of theater.

Yesterday I mentioned Timothy Corrigan’s book on film writing in lecture. Please review the excerpts from the book (in TritonEd under “Resource Page”) before watching the film.

Additional guidelines for preparing to write your film responses

– Read all the Required Reading on the syllabus, especially the texts marked as directly related to films for “home viewing.”

– Take notes while watching the film. These should include general observations about the film, as well as thoughts that resonate with topics covered in lecture, section, and the assigned reading. Consider aspects of the film that are perplexing or surprising. You may need to watch segments of the film more than once.

– Before beginning to write, try to focus your attention onto a single idea (it does not have to be complex!). Then, discuss it in your response in relation to one or two specific scenes or sequences from the film, which best illustrate your point. Think about not only what occurs in the scene, but also how it was shot (close up, point of view), and how it was edited (rhythm, sound).

– Please make use of any relevant film terms. I placed a list of basic film terms in TritonEd under “Resource Page.” If you are unfamiliar with any of them, please look up their definitions. If you have trouble understanding them, feel free to contact your TA or visit me during office hours. Some of these terms will be elaborated upon throughout the quarter.

Cyber law

Hello,

We had a discussion about some cyber law questions and I want you to write a respond to two of my friends.
I will attach a file that has my own work, so that you can read it and then respond to their ideas based on my work.

Here is their discussion:

First person:
1. Software piracy is growing every year, according to Computer weekly \” Some 57% of respondents to the Business Software Alliance’s (BSA) Global Software Piracy Study admitting using pirated software. \” . This is an enormous amount and it will continue to grow if we don\’t find a way to stop it. People dont realize that software piracy is a serious crime because not many get caught. Also it has become so easy with just click of your mouse you can download any software illegally. I feel that software piracy is a serious problem because some of this software that people are pirating is worth thousands of dollars each. It is know difference then going into a store and taking the key to the software.

In 2015, there was a case in Texas where 6 individuals got caught with 100 million dollars worth of software. The software consisted of Adobe systems and Microsoft products. They stolen 170000 access codes and when caught federal authorities also confiscated more than 20 million in asstes.

2. software should be copyrightable because it should be the authors choice to who has access to the software they created.

3. Prior to this assignment i have never taken the time to read the terms of service on any site. Youtube says in its terms of service that \” YouTube does not permit copyright infringing activities and infringement of intellectual property rights on the Service, and YouTube will remove all Content if properly notified that such Content infringes on another\’s intellectual property rights. YouTube reserves the right to remove Content without prior notice.\” . They don\’t take it lightly and will remove that content without even telling you.

Second person:

Software piracy is a huge problem for the software manufacture. The subject of the computer morality such as Software piracy taken a good deal of awareness from information system implementer and the people who works in the government. All of people used copy of the software because they thought, it is an inexpensive. In this knowledge, a sample for the knowledge of software piracy is advanced established on returns in the software piracy. An investigation was proceed using 479 student comprised of 229 at a university in United States, and 250 students at a university in Thailand. Four major thesis relating to the difference between Americans and Thais according to software piracy. “The significant results of this study show interesting findings that different countries differ in their software piracy behavior, attitudes toward software piracy, subjective norms, and perceived software piracy control”.

Because, there are a lot of people did the software piracy and they did not know about the consequences for that situation.
In my opinion, if the government allow the people to do it, all the software’s companies will damage and decrease their economy.
2. Seeing that I am an international student, software should be copyrightable because, it will be more difficult for the hack to access the copyright one.

3. I would like to take Facebook as a term, Facebook did a lot of good privacy in couple years ago. Every members have many choice to do it, in their own page. They can make report for anyone make something illegal, and the Facebook will delete the user from the system. Also Facebook make the new thing, you can see your friend’s location.

Please make a short response each one at least 150 words

You will write an analysis of a fictional movie or television show (sitcom or drama) about crime.

Assignment: You will write an analysis of a fictional movie or television show (sitcom or drama) about crime. You will be exploring and supporting a unique claim (thesis statement or central idea) of the visual text related to the topic of crime. Your analysis should be based on your own observation and critical viewing of the visual text with specific references to it through quotations, paraphrase, and summary.

For this project you will only use your chosen visual text and your own ideas about this text. Do not use websites or other outside sources such as IMDB, Wikipedia, etc. to find other opinions or analysis on the visual text. If you use these types of outside sources, you will risk plagiarizing your essay.

Possible topics:

Trace the main character’s journey.
Compare and contrast two very different characters.
Examine the significance of the setting.
Explain how the cinematography is used to convey the theme.
If your chosen text is older, look at how the depiction of crime and/or law enforcement is different than it would be in a contemporary visual text.
Audience: Someone who is not as familiar as you with your chosen visual text.

Steps for Analyzing a Visual:

Watch the movie or television show at least twice, reflecting on its meaning and looking for anything you might want to discuss at length.
Develop a thesis. (Do your prewriting.) What message does the visual text send about crime? Choose a thesis that you can defend with explanation and examples. Keep the focus narrow: you shouldn’t write about every aspect of the film.
Watch the visual text again. (If you’ve chosen a television show, watch several episodes—or in some cases the entire series—as many as you need to support your thesis.) Take notes as you watch; be ready with your remote control to pause and rewind. Write out bits of dialogue that seem significant. Be careful to do so accurately, and use quotation marks.
You may use any introductory technique (p. 299 of The Field Guide), but you must include the title of your visual text and what genre it is (such as move drama or TV sitcom). The thesis should be the last sentence or two of your introduction.
Summarize the movie or television show in your second paragraph. Include the director and when it was made. Include the name of another technician if your analysis will be focusing on that aspect. For instance, cite the name of the cinematographer if you are going to writing about the importance of shadows to film noir, or include the name of the composer of the movie’s score if you are writing about the importance of background music to the emotional tone of the film.
Include key characters (and the actors who play them) woven into the rest of your essay, mentioning when necessary.
Develop the paper, devoting a paragraph to each main point you want to make to support your thesis. Each paragraph should expand on a supporting point and begin with a topic sentence. Use examples, which may include dialogue, from the text to support your assertions. Write vivid descriptions employing all of your senses.
Use any technique for concluding your essay that you feel is appropriate (p. 299 of The Field Guide).
