After viewing the video in today\’s class please answer the following questions.

What are your thoughts and impressions?

Do you agree with MacDonald\’s assessment regarding crime in the inner city?

Is there now, in fact, a \”war\” on the police? If so, who is behind it?

Jacob Riis’s, How the Other Half Lives, write an essay on the topics and issues Riis explores in his book. Use this book as your main primary source, to explore the nuances of the topics exposed in Riis’s book. These assignments are designed to require you to engage closely with a single issue, but do not require extended treatment. They are less formal in nature than the final paper. These reading engagements require a traditional essay structure in miniature: introduction, body and conclusion. They also cannot just parrot what is in the text, they must provide an argument. You are free to discuss whichever assigned sources you wish. You should explain the argument for a target position (e.g. whether human will is free or determined, utilitarianism vs. Kantianism, etc.). After explaining the position, briefly give your argument for why you agree or disagree with the position. Marks will be given for clearly explaining the position and giving a clear argument. Feel free to compare and contrast with other positions you have learnt over the semester. You may contact me ahead of time if you want to ask questions about a particular topic.
