Final Paper

The purpose of the Final Paper is for you to culminate the learning achieved in the course by demonstrating your knowledge of organizational management by synthesizing the information from class into work and life experience.

Focus of the Final Paper

Think of an organization you have worked for or one with which you are very familiar.  Diagnose the need for change and present a plan to transform the organization, utilizing Kotter’s 8-Step Approach.

The Final Paper:

Overview

Our first writing assignment centered upon the definition of the sociological viewpoint toward social problems, and an identification of a social problem that we felt was one of the most significant in society. For this next paper, we will expand upon our understanding of the social problem through analyzing the organizations that are committed to addressing it. For example, with respect to the problems of homelessness, we see a variety of local and national level organizations that seek to enable people the opportunity to have permanent housing. Habitat for Humanity would be an excellent example of an organization that deals with such a concern. In the same sense, we may look at the Salvation Army as a type of organization committed to helping impoverished people, or people recently released from prison or drug treatment, to find gainful employment and reclaim a quality-of-life. Your job in this paper will be to do your own independent research on two organizations that are committed to the social problem chosen in the first writing assignment. This will ultimately lead to our final paper in which we’ll examine the future of the social problem.

Instructions

Construct a 2-4 page paper that fully satisfies these two areas:

1. Based upon your topic chosen in the first assignment, or based upon an entirely new topic of your choice, describe two organizations (Feel free to do your own independent research on these organizations) that is seeking to address this social problem. (1-2 pages).Note: If you do change topics please get prior approval from you instructor.

2. Analyze two major ways that each organization is addressing the social problem you have mentioned. For example, are they helping to create homeless shelters, are they helping people receive drug treatment, or are they working with state and local authorities to curb suffering in some area?

3. Use at least four concepts or theories from our text (not used in our first assignment) for each organization. Don’t forget to include proper APA-style citation and reference. (worth 10% of total grade).

Paper 1: Primary document analysis (3 pages)

Choose one of the primary documents we have read for class. Identify some of the main themes discussed in the document and write a paper analyzing them. What is the author trying to say? Why would someone in his/her situation hold these opinions? Why is this important? What does this document reveal to us about the historical context in which it was written? 1. The Retread Tire Company recaps tires. The fixed annual cost of the recapping operation is $65,000. The variable cost of recapping a tire is $7.5. The company charges$25 to recap a tire.
2. For an annual volume of 15, 000 tire, determine the total cost, total revenue, and profit.
3. Determine the annual break-even volume for the Retread Tire Company operation.
4. Evergreen Fertilizer Company produces fertilizer. The company’s fixed monthly cost is $25,000, and its variable cost per pound of fertilizer is $0.20. Evergreen sells the fertilizer for $0.45 per pound. Determine the monthly break-even volume for the company.
5. If Evergreen Fertilizer Company in problem 2 changes the price of its fertilizer from $0.45 per pound to $0.55 per pound, what effect will the change have on the break-even volume?
6. If Evergreen Fertilizer Company increases its advertising expenditure by $10,000 per year, what effect will the increase have on the break-even volume computed in problem 2? (the only difference for  is that the fixed cost increased because of the increase in advertising cost.   You will need to calculate the monthly increase in advertising cost and add this to the original monthly fixed cost.)
7. Annie McCoy, a student at Tech, plans to open a hot dog stand inside Tech’s football stadium during home games. There are 6 home games scheduled for the upcoming season. She must pay the Tech athletic department a vendor’s fee of $3,000 for the season. Her stand and other equipment will cost her $3,500 for the season. She estimates that each hot dog she sells will cost her $0.40. she has talked to friends at other universities who sell hot dogs at games. Based on their information and the athletic department’s forecast that each game will sell out, she anticipates that she will sell approximately 1,500 hot dogs during each game.
8. What price should she charge for a hot dog in order to break even?
9. What factors might occur during the season that would alter the volume sold and thus the break-even price Annie might charge? (For 5b,  you only need to list the factors and explain a little bit, no numbers involved.)

 

6. The college of business at Kerouac University is planning to begin an online MBA program. The initial start-up cost for computing equipment, facilities, course development and staff recruitment and development is $400,000. The college plans to charge tuition of $20,000 per student per year. However, the university administration will charge the college $10,000 per student for the first 100 students enrolled each year for administrative costs and its share of the tuition payments.

The manager has determined that if 85% of customer demand for recorders can be met, then the combined cost of lost sales and inventory will be minimized. A key challenge with CSR is determining the ways in which companies measure, represent, and report on their ethical and sustainable programs and activities. Although there are national and global best practices for ethical behavior by corporations, there is no single national or universal index used by all.

Instructions:

As a potential socially responsible investor, you’re interested in learning more about a company’s CSR and sustainability practices. To that end, you are planning to perform due diligence before making a decision about whether or not to invest in a company. Select one MNC and read its annual CSR report. Then address the following.

1. Compare and contrast the company’s CSR report using two indices, such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes and The Global 100, which measure the CSR practices of corporations. For this individual assignment you are to make several strategy decisions for your company and write a report to your management team compiling the information you gather in each of the three parts.

In this situation you work for a mid-size US company that manufactures domestically and markets [you choose the product]. The company has no international manufacturing or vendors and does not outsource. You are to investigate the following scenarios:

Part 1:

Your management team is considering investing in a foreign country and has requested a report regarding the attractiveness of alternative countries based on the potential return of FDI. Accordingly, the ranking of the top 25 countries in terms of FDI attractiveness is a crucial ingredient for your report. A colleague mentioned a potentially useful tool called the “FDI Confidence Index” which is updated periodically.

Using this index (and other information you have gathered), make a recommendation to your management team of 5 possible countries for your company to make an investment in and why. You need to think about your product to make sure it will culturally adapt to these countries as well.

Part 2:

Management is using your recommendations and wants you to evaluate the specific countries for this direct investment.

We started the semester by reading Hesiod’s Theogony, the Greek version of the creation of the universe. This story included several epic battles between divine forces, one of which was called theTitanomachy – the battle between the Olympic gods and the Titans. This is (kind of) the subject of the classic 1981 film The Clash of the Titans, which engages with several Greek myths and takes as its inspiration the epic battle among the gods.

For this paper, I want you to watch this film (available on course reserves) and critically examine its presentation of Greek myth, Greek gods, and Greek religion in popular media.

1. Read the Myth of Perseus and the Gorgon Medusa (March, p. 170-175) and Bellerophon and the Chimera (March, p. 175-179)
2. Watch Clash of the Titans with a critical lens

 

Production quality of the film aside, watch it and use the following questions as a guide for your analysis:

 

• Does the movie take creative license with the stories, departing from the Hesiodic (or Homeric, or other) versions of the myth? How and in what way?
• Are the characteristics and attributes of the gods faithful to the Hesiodic versions?
• From the art and architecture we’ve looked at in class, how accurate is the setting? Are there elements of Greek art and architecture that your recognize? Are there elements that seem strange?
• What are elements of the film that may be influenced by modern culture?
• Does a more robust knowledge of Greek myth enhance and/or spoil the film?
