Compare your calculated historical return with the required rate of return you calculated using CAPM.

Part I: Sensitivity of Bond Price With Respect to YTM, Coupon Rate, and Maturity

you have a bond with these features:

Coupon rate: 10% annual

Coupon payment frequency: semiannual

Time to maturity: 20 years

Face value: $1,000

Yield to maturity (YTM, I, or r): 12%

Tabulate and graph the price of this bond by changing (one at a time):

Coupon rate from 1% to 30% (jumps of 1%)

Coupon payment frequency (# of compoundings) from once a year (annual bond) to 365 times a year

Time to maturity from 1 year to 50 years (in jumps of 1 year) Yield to maturity from 0% to 50%

Explain in words the relationship between price and each of the above parameters. Explain like a graduate student, not as a child.

Part 2: Stock Valuation

Use the CAPM formula to find the cost of common stock for the firm that you choose for Week 1 Discussion.

Get the beta for your firm from Yahoo Finance. Use a market risk premium of 6.5%

Get the risk free rate from Yahoo Finance (under Bonds, look for the longest-maturity Treasury Bond yield).

Calculate last year’s actual return for this firm using historical prices from Yahoo Finance. Choose your price from the Adj. Return column which adjusts the price for stock splits, dividends, and a whole bunch of things that otherwise cause you a lot of problems.

Consider the year to be End of August 2013 to End of August 2014

Annual historical return = (year-end price 2014 – price one year ago)/ price one year ago

In other words, calculate the percentage change in price during the last one year.

Imagine for the sake of this assignment that the required rate of return a year ago was the same as the one you calculated today using CAPM.

Compare your calculated historical return with the required rate of return you calculated using CAPM. Explain the difference. What would this difference indicate to the investors? What would they be tempted to do? Can this difference stay this way in the long-run?

A discussion of at least 3 important types of ABS, including MBS .

As a finance employee in a municipality, you have been informed that a separate $85 million pension fund for the municipality’s firefighters will be carved out of the municipality’s pension fund. The newly formed Firefighter’s Pension Investment Committee is interested in investing up to $25 million of pension assets in asset-backed securities to mature in 10 years so that they can be disbursed to a fund for payment to retired firefighters. Your task is to make a presentation of 600–800 words to the committee explaining the different types of ABS for the committee’s consideration. The presentation must include the following:

  • A discussion of at least 3 important types of ABS, including MBS
  • Two specific, real-world examples of asset-backed securities with appropriate maturities and how they compare to a Treasury security of the same maturity in terms of the spread over the Treasury yield
  • A discussion of the third risk that exists for MBS investors in addition to the credit and interest rate risks faced by all bondholders, as well as which kind of MBS would be the most appropriate for the pension fund given its 10-year horizon for disbursing funds
  • At least 2 outside sources and no wikipeda related sites/reference page
  • Must be APA format

Due Week 4 by Saturday at 11:59 pm, ET.

1. Prepare a 10-column worksheet like the ones you find in Chapter 4 of your text, for fiscal year 2009. Using the Project Information that follows, enter the unadjusted trial balance figures in the unadjusted trial balance columns and total both columns. They should be equal. Don’t forget to underline to show a calculation (this goes before your total) and double underline at the end of a column (in this case after the total). Submit it to the drop box in Week 4 by Saturday at 11:59 pm, ET.

**This section will be reviewed and returned to you for corrections before submitting your final copy. **

Due Week 5 by Saturday at 11:59 pm, ET.

2. Continue working on your original worksheet and add the adjustments below to your worksheet. Be sure to also write the journal entries for the adjustments in proper format below the worksheet or on a second page of your workbook. Remember we covered adjusting journal entries in Chapter 3 of your text. Don’t forget to total your columns. Again they should be equal.

Here are the adjustments to be made:

a) The supplies available at the end of fiscal year 2009 had a cost of $3,420.

b) The cost of expired insurance for the fiscal year is $4,095.

c) Annual depreciation on equipment is $11,000.

d) The April utilities expense of $580 is not included in the unadjusted trial balance because the bill arrived after the trial balance was prepared. The $580 amount owed needs to be recorded.

e) The company's employees have earned $1,500 of accrued wages at fiscal year-end.

f) The rent expense incurred and not yet paid or recorded at fiscal year-end is $1,400.

g) Additional property taxes of $500 have been assessed but have not been paid or recorded in the accounts.

h) The long-term note payable bears interest at 12% per year. The unadjusted Interest

Expense account equals the amount paid for the first 11 months of the 2009 fiscal year. The $250 accrued interest for April has not yet been paid or recorded. (Note that the company is required to make a $5,000 payment toward the note payable during the 2010 fiscal year.)

3. Now you need to combine the columns in the unadjusted trial balance with those in the adjustments columns to obtain the figures for the adjusted trial balance. Remember for accounts that have a normal debit balance, you add debits to debits and you subtract credits from debits. If the account has a normal credit balance, you add credits to credits and subtract debits from credits. It is very important to pay attention to the normal balance of each account. Again, total both columns and they should balance.
