Read \”Invitation to Sociology\” (linked in Week 1). What are your thoughts on the practice of sociology? Do you think it is right or ethical for sociologists to not identify themselves when doing research? To misrepresent themselves? What if identifying themselves as researchers will destroy their access to a research setting or to informants?
Under what circumstances might it be OK to not identify themselves?
Week 2 Socialization Discussion
The supplemental reading offers the story of Anna and Isabelle–what lesson from their stories stands out to you the most? (If you choose a similar answer to another student be sure to include original critique or thoughts, using direct quotes from the reading is encouaged!)
Further, what two agents of socialization have influenced you the most? Can you pinpoint their influence on your attitudes, beliefs, values, or other orientations to life? Give an example.

Putnam’s article assumes that \”social connectedness” is a good and desirable thing. In high schools all across the country, large numbers of students participate actively in clubs and associations of all kinds. Many students also devote considerable energy to volunteer work. How, then, does one explain the civic disengagement of all strata of the general adult population (regardless of income or educational level)? At what point does disengagement start to occur? And why?
And if social connectedness is good, and on the decline, then what do you believe one can possibly do (at the communal and/or the national level) to encourage and foster it? If you disagree with Putnam’s assumption, what do you think will sustain social cohesion and the belief in the viability of democracy in the US? (In other words, can democracy as we know it survive the increasing atomization of society?)
