Found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urgO53m-qSE )–do so thinking about the residential and work conditions faced by city\’s newest immigrants; Second, read Kathy Peis\’s chapter Dance Madness (chapter four–you do NOT have not read chapter two, \”Leisure and Labor\”) and be thinking about the ways in which, even in such a harsh environment, working class immigrant youths found ways to have \”their time\” and have fun; Third, read the 15 or so pages in the folder containing a chapter from Kasson\’s Amusing the Million and be thinking about the ways in which cultural elites (usually from the upper and middle-classes) tried to direct and instruct the working classes on the proper uses of leisure time.

Answer the following questions:

In the harsh living and work environs of turn of the century immigrant neighborhoods, how did working class youths spend \”their (free) time\”, and how did the work environment of factories and sweat shops actually reinforce laborers forms of amusement? Why did the working classes\’ forms of “amusement” worry employers and middle- and upper-class genteel reformers? Finally, how would reformers rather the working classes utilize their leisure hours, and how did reformers try to stitch their cultural prerogatives in the built environment of New York and other cities? Give specific details from the videos and readings—do not be overly-vague. Please answer in 2 pages.
