Leon is a 52-year old man who describes his family of origin as “extremely dysfunctional,” with both parents having “addictive personalities.” His father was an alcoholic, and fathered many children by several woman. Leon’s father was also verbally and physically abusive. Shouting and violence were common family experiences.

 

His parents divorced when Leon was six. As a divorcee with illegitimate children, his mother became an outcast in his small town, so she moved his family to Mexico City. There, his mother dealt with the stresses of life by becoming extremely angry and violent with her children. At age 17, Leon had reached the limit of his ability to endure this violence. He moved out of the house, along with his brothers and sisters. As the oldest child, Leon became the main source of support for his younger siblings.

 

Leon studied to be a plumber, and later a general contractor.  He had deep anxiety about committing to marriage and family, and especially feared being abandoned. Eventually, Leon married a designer, and they had two daughters, and have been married for 27 years. He describes himself as “committed, but distant” from his wife, feeling himself disengaged from family activities and finding little joy in anything. Mostly apathetic, recently, his older daughter chose to work instead of attending college, Leon noted that he reacted with frustration and anger, reminding himself of his mother.  Leon feels lack of energy, occasional heart palpitations, insomnia, and constipation (since age six, when his parents divorced).

Internal and External Assessments for Strategic Planning

The case study selected demonstrate some of the dilemmas of strategic planning encountered in different settings. For any health care organization, internal and external assessments are an important part of the strategic planning process.

Prepare for this Discussion as follows:

Review the case study information in attachment.

“What Would You Do? Affiliate, Merge, or Stay Independent?”

As you review your selected case study, consider the following:

What are the important steps to take while conducting internal and external assessments? What information in the case study is relevant for the assessments this organization would likely conduct?

What steps would you recommend to gather additional, pertinent data (not included in the case study) as part of the assessment phase? Why would this data be important? How might it influence strategic planning?

Identify one internal or external factor described in the case and consider how the assessments might differ if it changed. For instance, how might this scenario be different if the organization were actually located in your community? You may also other consider influences, such as current health care reform, and their effects on the assessments.

As I mentioned in class last week, we’re now into the section of the class that focuses on Christianity, particularly how Christians view what it means to be human in a world created by God. The author, Rowan Williams, was the archbishop of Canterbury, which is the highest authority in the Anglican Church (the branch of Christianity that began in England with Henry VIII). In this text, he talks about Christian belief and the issue of trust in a world where people are trained to be suspicious. Don’t worry if you feel a little confused the first time through this article… I’d suggest giving it a quick read through, then go back and focus closely on the sections that these questions direct you to.

1. Explain the difference between someone’s belief in the Loch Ness monster and the Christian’s belief in God, according to Williams.

2. You may have noticed Williams often referring to some of the “great questions” that we have returned to numerous times throughout the semester. One of these great questions, especially given the wide variety of interpretations of Scripture or the existence of other major religions like Buddhism, is this: “Why should we put our confidence in God the Father almight, maker of heaven and earth?” (p 7). Write a couple of sentences that explain how Williams answers this question on pages 7-10.

3. Williams states: “You won’t be surprised to hear that I haven’t yet found the decisive new argument that will prove once and for all that there really is a God” (p. 20) Try to explain why this doesn’t really bother Williams. Hint: consider where he thinks many people’s belief in God begins (p. 21)

4. Choose 1 of the 2 stories that he recounts in the final few pages of the article about people who “take responsibility for making God credible in the world” and briefly explain how that person did “make God credible.”

Discuss observations about the challenges associated with the installation process, unexpected outcomes, and any recommendations regarding the operating system installation task.

Consider the following scenario:

Andre has asked you to evaluate his business, Andre’s Hair Styling. Andre has five barbers working for him. (Andre is not one of them.) Each barber is paid $9.90 per hour and works a 40-hour week and a 50-week year, regardless of the number of haircuts. Rent and other fixed expenses are $1,750 per month. Hair shampoo used on all clients is $0.40 per client. Assume that the only service performed is the giving of haircuts (including shampoo), the unit price of which is $12. Andre has asked you to find the following information.

• Find the contribution margin per haircut. Assume that the barbers’ compensation is a fixed cost. Show calculations to support your answer.
• Determine the annual break-even point, in number of haircuts. Support your answer with an appropriate explanation. Show calculations to support your answer.
• What will be the operating income if 20,000 haircuts are performed? Show calculations to support your answer.
• Suppose Andre revises the compensation method. The barbers will receive $4 per hour plus $6 for each haircut. What is the new contribution margin per haircut? What is the annual break-even point (in number of haircuts)? Show calculations to support your answer.

Consider the company that you are working for or another company with which you are familiar. What is one of the primary symbols or cultural artifacts that employees would recognize (not a customer marketing logo or slogan)? Answer the following questions about the culture of the company:

• What makes the symbol or cultural artifact so powerful as a representative icon of the company?
  • Why does it function so well to illustrate the culture of the company?
  • What does it really mean, or what purpose does it serve versus the way that it functions symbolically? Does the icon have more than one meaning?
• How did the organization or someone in the organization deliberately create the symbol as a rallying point or idea for the employees?
• What other symbols or practices of the company represent the nature of the company or how people remember the company, its traditions, or its processes and procedures?
• How far back in the history of the organization do you think that these symbols extend?
• How do these symbols, practices, traditions, and even corporate myths serve to help create an overall culture of the company?
  • How would you describe the culture, in general, of this organization?

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation of 10–12 slides to present to your fellow employees. Answer the questions posed above, in any order you choose, to provide an overview of the use of symbols in the culture of the organization. If possible, photograph, scan, or otherwise reproduce images of the icons that you are considering, and include them in the presentation.
