Here’s What Happened . . .

You are the superintendent of the Centervale Juvenile Detention Center. Centervale’s mayor has been discussing juvenile justice policy with several advisors and has now requested your input. Specifically, the mayor is interested in your thoughts on the various justifications for correction, challenges associated with running a detention center, and steps that might be taken to address those challenges.

Here Is What You Need To Do . . .

Part I

Using the memo template, prepare a memo to the mayor that examines the following:

• The mayor is aware that different rationales for the correction of juveniles exist. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the four primary models of corrections and make an argument for the one that should be utilized at the Centervale Juvenile Detention Center. Indicate which primary model will represent the best interests for the youth and the Centervale community. Compare the selected model to the other three models of corrections, identifying the pros and cons of each. Use examples from empirical research as foundational support for your case.
• The mayor has been advised at different points on a number of challenges currently facing juvenile corrections, particularly juvenile detention. Based on your knowledge of detention facilities, identify the single greatest challenge to successfully administering the Centervale Juvenile Detention Center. As superintendent, you have unique insight into the struggles of the administration, staff, and detained youths. Describe and analyze the various challenges and point out one that is the most critical. Using empirical research to identify three or four other challenges, examine and explain the significance of these challenges as they relate to successfully administering the Centervale Juvenile Detention Center.

Part II

As the detention center superintendent, you are responsible for choosing from a wide variety of programs and services for implementation within your facility, each with its own goals, processes, and methods. Based on the challenges you outlined in Part I, which program, policies, or initiatives would you select for your detention center? Remember, advocates from multiple programs and initiatives that claim to address the various ills of the justice system routinely approach the mayor touting a particular course of action. As the superintendent, it’s your job to educate the mayor on which program best fits the unique challenges of your community.

Using empirical research, identify and analyze several possible initiatives that would best fit the Centervale Juvenile Detention Center, making sure to point out the strengths and weaknesses of each along with your recommendations. Remember, too, that your recommendations must fit within the general tenets of the correctional rationale you selected in Part I for utilization at the detention center. Also, remember to point out how the programs you recommend might affect the community as well as the youths being housed in the detention center.

A Short Paper Assignment allows you, early in the course, to demonstrate your research skills to your instructor and to receive feedback that will benefit you when you write your research paper. With this assignment, you will learn how to do proper and adequate research and write a short paper and prepare you for writing the research paper.

The Writing assignment 2 is simple…watch one of the films on the list and answer each question in paragraph format, citing the movie when you write something specific to answer the question.  You use the format your degree mandates. Do not forget to have a bibliography and also do not forget to answer all the questions…you should have three pages by the time you are done…meaning your answers need to be at college level to gain full credit.

This short paper is at least three double-spaced pages of text (Times New Roman, font size 12) and you must consult a the video source. Bibliographies and citations will be in your designated major’s mandated style.

The short paper needs to be turned in through the assignment section for grading. If you use any of the information from your sources word-for-word, you must cite the source by using endnotes or footnotes. If you read the information and write it in your own words and it is not common knowledge, then you must cite the source because you are paraphrasing someone’s information.

The short paper must include a cover page with your name, course number and course title, instructor’s name, and date. You must also include a bibliography at the end of your paper. While composing your paper, use proper English. Do not use abbreviations, contractions, passive voice, or first/ second person (I, you, we, our, etc). Juvenile reentry is defined as programs, services, and supports intended to assist youths transitioning from (juvenile corrections) residential placement back into the community (Gies, 2003). Reentry represents a small but crucial part of the corrections continuum as the proper coordination of substance abuse, mental health, educational, vocational, and other services is critical if the youth in question is to successfully rejoin the community. In this exercise, you will consider a wide assortment of contributing factors in one juvenile’s situation and will select the most salient points to determine how best to successfully reintegrate this juvenile into the community.

Scenario

You are a reentry specialist at the Centervale Juvenile Detention Center. John Drew is a seventeen-year-old male who has been detained in the facility for the previous nine months. His first offense on record was running away from home when he was twelve. Since then, he has appeared in juvenile court for a number of offenses, including trespassing, breaking curfew, shoplifting, and possessing prescription drugs illegally. His most recent offense, and the one responsible for his stay in the Centervale Juvenile Detention Center, was an unarmed assault on another youth. Drew is quite behind in his studies, having completed course work only through his eighth-grade year.

During his time at the detention center, Drew was given a mental health assessment and found to have bipolar disorder. He has a history of substance use, using marijuana, methamphetamine, and cocaine; Drew recently indicated that he now prefers prescription drugs. Upon release, Drew will serve two years on probation. Drew’s parents have stated that he will live in their home upon release, though he has in the past stated his intentions to live on his own. He has expressed remorse for his previous behaviors and says he’s anxious to get a fresh start.

Here’s What You Need to Do . . .

For this assignment, you have been directed by your supervisor to write a reentry plan based on the scenario above. Specifically, you’ve been instructed to develop a reentry plan for Drew that includes the following:

The context for Drew’s reentry plan. Offer an examination of the history of juvenile treatment. How did the notion of juvenile treatment begin, and how has it changed since? Describe some of the major trends in juvenile corrections and explain the effect of each. Examine and describe the current state of juvenile treatment.
An assessment of Drew’s current state, including a review and summary of Drew’s scenario given above. Given that you have limited information from which to draw conclusions, make assumptions based on your knowledge of juvenile treatment issues where data for Drew is missing or incomplete. Be sure to clearly note when you make an assumption and give clear, well-reasoned examples as support. Also, make sure to draw from research, including digital assets and resources suggested by this course, when appropriate.
An analysis of your initial assessment. What are the most important factors affecting Drew’s successful integration into the community? How might Drew’s co-occurring disorders or issues play into one another? What other factors might affect Drew’s return to the community? Explain your answer using examples and reasoning.
A comprehensive reentry plan based on your assessment and analysis of Drew’s case and your examination of the history of juvenile treatment. What recommendations do you make for Drew’s case? How do elements of Drew’s plan fit into the continuum of juvenile corrections? Which approaches, if any, should be avoided for Drew and why? What sorts of actions and behaviors do you want to minimize or emphasize? How will you maintain Drew’s accountability? What other resources might you recommend for Drew?
