1. Recall that Rowan Williams told us that many people start believing in God because other people show them that God is trustworthy. With that in mind, write a paragraph that explains the importance of Victorinus and Ponticianus for Augustine’s eventual conversion. Try to explain what it is specifically about each of those men that is so important for Augustine.

2. Look through the chapter for the times that Augustine mentions his friend Alypius. Write a brief paragraph here about Alypius’ role in the chapter.

3. What finally pushes Augustine to fully convert to Christianity? How does Antony factor in to that final decision?

In the news, we are constantly bombarded by statistics such as unemployment rates, stock market swings, or changes in the housing market. A vast majority of the statistical information presented to us is in the form of descriptive statistics. In descriptive statistics, a sample is taken, and values such as mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance are determined. These values are used to compare to other samples or are used as a measure of the current state of a population. The use of descriptive statistics is a common practice in the decision-making process in many professional fields.

In this assignment, you will use descriptive statistics to make an informed decision—in this case, to decide whether you are going to purchase a new car. Consider the following scenario:

The manufacturer claims that the Brillton EX gets 25 miles per gallon (MPG) in the city and 35 MPG on the highway. However, you are skeptical. You manage to retrieve data for the first Brillton EX models that were tested by a consumer protection agency. This data is available in the following spreadsheet. This spreadsheet consists of several tabs:

• Samples: This tab contains all of the different samples tested. These are randomly selected Brillton EX cars. The MPG levels of these cars were measured in the city and on the highway.
• Descriptive Statistics: This tab contains the formulas that will calculate the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance from the sample data.
• Population: This tab contains the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance for the entire population of Brillton EX models.

Instructions:

• Download the Brillton EX spreadsheet.
• On the Samplestab, chose one of the data samples.
• Input the data from the sample you selected into the Sample Data columns on the Descriptive Statistics tab. When you are done, the spreadsheet will automatically determine the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance for this sample.

  Note: There is a tab labeled Exampleto show you how this should work if done properly.

• In your report, address the following:
  • Report the sample name that you selected.
  • Report the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance that were calculated for your sample. What does each of these values represent with respect to your sample?
  • Compare the descriptive statistics you calculated to the population statisticsreported. Were there differences? Why or why not?
  • Do you think that the sample you picked was representative of the population? Explain your response.
  • Do you think that using descriptive statistics is a reliable method for gathering data in order to make an informed decision?
  • Based upon your analysis, do you accept the manufacturer’s claim that the Brillton EX gets 25 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highway? Why or why not?

In a well-constructed, one page essay (500+ words), compare and contrast the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) and the Uniform Crime Report (UCR). What data is collected in each? How is it collected? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each? How are they used by criminologists?

Although some states and cities have passed laws to ban texting and using handheld phones while driving, there is no current law to ban all cell phone use while driving. However, according to the National Safety Council (2009), 28 percent of all crashes—1.6 million per year—are caused by cell phone use and texting by drivers. The mission of a new national nonprofit organization called FocusDriven, patterned after Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is to make phone use while driving as illegal and socially unacceptable as drunk driving. US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood supports FocusDriven and its efforts.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, LaHood said that this movement would become “an army of people traveling the countryside” to push for bans on cell-phone use and tough enforcement (Schmitz, 2010). As a political advocate interested in this issue, you will be writing a policy proposal that utilizes the current research to propose a solution to the issue and submitting it in Module 5.

Annotated Bibliography: Effect of Cell Phone Use

Before you can write this proposal research, you will need to conduct initial research on the science behind this initiative. For this assignment, use the Argosy University online library resources to locate research reports from peer-reviewed journals that discuss the effects of cell phone use on vision, attention, perception, or memory. In selecting at least five research reports from peer-reviewed journals relevant to the topic, make sure they address one or more of the following issues:

• How do texting, handheld phones, and hands-free phones compare with each other in their effects on driving?
• How do other, traditional distractions compare to cell phone use in their effects on driving (such as eating, attending to children, talking to passengers, listening to music/news, etc.)?
• Can cell phone use while driving be compared with drunk driving? Why or why not?
• What other variables (such as age) can affect driving while using a cell phone?

Based on your reading of the five articles, create an annotated bibliography for each of the five sources. Each annotation should consist of the APA reference entry followed by a paragraph-long summary of the articles. In your summary, provide answers for the questions below. For the last question, think about how the research results could be generalized to fit other environments or not be generalized.

• Summarize the main ideas in the reference. What were they investigating?
• How were the studies conducted? What was the sample size? Is it appropriate?
• Were the studies conducted in the real world or was a simulated environment used?
• How might these methodological considerations affect the research findings and the conclusions drawn from them? How does this article fit in with your paper? How did it influence your own ideas about your paper?

Assignment 1: Discussion—Biomes, Development, Pollution, and You

Each part of the United States has at least one ecological crisis based on location, biome, and industrialization pattern. For example, the Midwest was once a prairie with very fertile soil. However, when people realized that with the right watering and drainage system this area could become productive farmland, there arose ecological problems. The conversion of the prairie to farmland is the root cause of many ecological problems in this region.

Regardless of what biome you consider, humans have likely had an impact on the ecology of that area.

For this assignment, identify the biome in which you live. The following are a few examples of biomes:

Tropical rainforests: This biome has high average temperatures, high moisture levels, and high species diversity.
Prairies: The prairies have grassland-variable temperatures, variable moisture levels—depending on proximity to mountain ranges—and are mainly dominated by grasses and ungulate herbivores.
Deserts: These biomes have hotter average temperatures, low moisture, lower species diversity, and a composition of species limited mainly to those that are adapted to hot temperatures.
Temperate forests: The temperate forests have variable temperatures, high moisture levels, and higher species diversity.
Taigas: These biomes have colder average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and lower species diversity.
Tundras: The tundras have cold average temperatures, low moisture levels, and low species diversity.
Coral reefs: These biomes have high average temperatures and high species diversity.
Open oceans: These biomes have a wide range of temperatures and species diversity varies.
Chaparrals: The chaparrals have higher average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and are dominated mainly by grasses and shrubs.
Alpines: These biomes have low average temperatures, low precipitation, and receive high ultraviolet (UV) rays due to high elevation.

Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, respond to the following:

Explain how humans have impacted the biome in which you live. List the types of environmental damage that have been caused and the species that have been impacted.
Describe the major pollution issues for your biome, and elaborate on the sources of this pollution.
List any species that have become extinct in this biome.

Health Insurance and Economy

When dealing with public health policy and laws, we need to consider various aspects of the economy. Concepts of efficiency can be utilized when deciding which goods and services should be produced and who should receive them.

The three types of efficiencies are allocative, production, and technical. The two types of health economics are positive and normative. Positive Economics deals with “what is” or the current status that is linked to a clear standard of measurement. Normative economics deals with “what ought to be” and is subject to interpretation with the moral or ethical aspects of a policy. Your lecture has more details.

Using the Internet, search the article, “The Interplay of Public Health Law and Industry Self-Regulation: The Case of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Sales in Schools.”

On the basis of the article and your understanding on the topic, write a 3- to 4-page essay in a Microsoft Word document on the three types of economic efficiencies and both positive and normative economics as it relates to regulating sugar-sweetened beverage sales in schools.
