What do you anticipate will be the greatest challenge of operationalizing strategy across various business functions? Do you think the challenges change depending on the circumstances? Provide an example within your field (nursing).
In “Business Model Innovation in Practice,\” Euchner and Ganguly (2014) discuss the challenge of implementing innovations within organizations that are naturally resistant to change. They present a systematic approach for integrating innovations to increase the likelihood of acceptance and success. Review their five-step approach and discuss how the four functions of management (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) can be leveraged within in their suggested approach to assist organizations in implementing successful innovations.

Your critical essay task is to plan and write a critical comparative essay relating to the module content using these guidelines and the additional information at the end of the document.
1: Choose one of the following topics:
• Funding in education/austerity
2: These are general and broad topic areas that are very large and often over-lapping, so what you must do is focus your topic around carefully self-selected two-four themes of your choice.
For example, within the topic of widening participation you may choose to articulate three themes to focus, such as i) tuition fees in HE ii) league tables iii) high stakes examinations.
3: Take your topic/themes and compare and contrast the approaches taken to it in the English OR USA (Neoliberal) education system with one of the following countries:
Socialist/ Communist: Cuba

In the given scenario, a 55-year old woman comes to you for financial advice on how to ensure support herself and the kids before and after the divorce. She has hired an attorney but they have just gotten started. Find a scholarly (peer reviewed) journal article pertaining to divorce planning, list your suggestions and explain how the article supports your position. Follow instructions for posting to the class discussion.
In 3 paragraphs critically assess the divorce scenario, provide recommendations, and explain how the article supports your recommendations. Cite your sources using MLA style and include a list of works cited in MLA format.
What is Neoliberalism and How Does it Apply to Education
An essay of 2000 words evidencing an emerging understanding of neoliberalism.
Critically discuss your emerging understanding of neoliberalism explaining the three principles, and how they are a part of the neoliberalisation of education.
Remember it is an essay so you must present it appropriately. Importantly you need to include an introduction and summarizing conclusion and reference list. The main body of the essay should include definition and discussion of:
a) Define the market principle of neoliberalism using academic scholarship. Using appropriate articles from the Guardian/TES/THE, describe how education is being marketised;
b) Define the self-interest principle of neoliberalism using academic scholarship. Using appropriate articles from the Guardian/TES/THE, describe how the self-interest principle can be seen to be working in education;
c) Define the laissez-faire principle of neoliberalism using academic scholarship. Using appropriate articles from the Guardian/TES/THE, describe how the self-interest principle can be seen to be working in education.
As developing level 5 learners, you will be expected make a judgment about what constitutes “appropriate articles”. You are advised to consider for suitability: the relevancy, length, breadth and the author of the articles. For example, you may select just two articles and you judge these to be “appropriate” because they are each several pages long covering a range of relevant themes and written by key scholars.

There are five of them—based on the last chapters from the second part of the semester. Before we get to them though, here are a few reminders/comments (in no particular order)… these comments apply to what we’ve done before as well as the upcoming test answers which are due on the last day of the semester—officially Saturday, July 9th. You are asked to please e-mail me the five answers by sometime that day. If you need more time, please ask for it so I know when the answers will be arriving. If you’d be so kind to place the answers within the body of an e-mail, that will be helpful to me; I try to open whatever students send me but often my firewall provisions (depending on where I am working from) discourage it. There is no specified format and no minimum or maximum length. Just to give you a perspective though—each answer could conceivably be about a paragraph or so each—including the example. If you use a quote, reference it specifically (BTW, TV shows are a wonderful resource in my opinion—in all my years in business, TV has never been better for supplementing learning).
Quality is preferred over quantity in the business world; IOW your longer answers are not better. Definitions are not important to us, as most organizational behaviorists cannot define thigs, but they can explain them and quickly say, “For example…” which is what I am requesting from you. Your opinions matter less as we’ve discussed than demonstrating a thorough understanding of the topics. Some students get confused by this. Relating topics to your own one, not multiple example/story/experiences is not the same as rendering your subjective views—it means explaining things to us showing that you “get it.” This is just as a practicing OB manager would do.
The only use of the Discussion Board for Sunday through and including Wednesday (our last week) is optional in case you want to “pitch” your good answer examples to the group, having no fear they will be stolen from you—for one of the main criteria for an effective answer is a unique, specific example. A good place to start is your own team, club, workplace, house of worship, etc. These potential postings have nothing to do with grading at this point; it is merely a powerful feedback mechanism. Others can feel free to chime in, but I will attempt to share feedback as much as possible to help your answers along (through WEDNESDAY, July 6th). One important piece here, this does not mean to do the questions and post them and say, “Here, what do you think?!” That’s not what the offer is. It is brief, simple feedback on ideas of how to answer best.
As also previously mentioned, please pay close attention to profitability, increasing revenue and/or decreasing costs. Every manager should be concerned with these, always. (My partner talks about the three legged stool they used at Disney: Cast Members, Guests, and Profitability).
GSP will matter a lot for grading purposes for the test answers (just a reminder that this test is worth 20% of the final grade).
Question One is taken from the Leadership Chapter. Please take a topic or theory. Explain it by discussing an example of it “in action.” Identify it by traits, and focus on if it will likely more increase profitability or decrease from it. I realize it can be both at the same time- but through your example please just deal with one aspect.
Question Two is taken from the Power and Politics Chapter. We hear/read a lot about power being misused. Please site an original example of some type of power being used in a positive way. Positive here means that it not only adds to profitability, but it seems to serve the healthy needs of all involved (employees, customers, shareholders, etc.).
Question Three is taken from the Foundations of Organization Structure Chapter. Which is better, to be centralized or decentralized? Your particular example will answer the question for that particular example.
Question Four is taken from the Organization Culture Chapter. We learn in Sociology that Culture determines what is good, true and beautiful. Describe a particular culture of a company. Big hint here is you’re probably better off choosing a small company so your answer is different than others in the class. If I didn’t stress this, we may end up with multiple people using Nike, Starbucks and Google—to name a few. The rationale here is the more specific and unique is your example; the more you are demonstrating you understand the concepts. So please follow all the suggestions and instructions within these paragraphs and you will effectively do that (recall that’s all any test is supposed to be doing anyway—measuring do we get it).
Question Five is from the Diversity Chapter. What would need to occur in a particular company to be able to eliminate any programs to encourage AA and/or diversity training?
Read in this order: from Sidewalk (and the whole book is uploaded, so use the table of contents to help yourself navigate) read \”How Sixth Avenue Became a Sustaining Habitat (begins on pg 115),\” \”Sidewalk Sleeping (begins on pg 157),\” and \”The Space Wars: Competing Legalities (Begins on pg 231),\” then read Chronopoulos\’s chapter \”The Radicalization of Spatial Regulation\”. You no longer need to watch the video (which was originally on the syllabus). Chronopoulos\’s chapter is upside down–just rotate accordingly.
After reading the aforementioned, answer the following:
How did the homeless men in Sidewalk try to create a semblance of stability in their lives—particularly in maintaining an income and sustainable habitat? What methods were used by city authorities and business elites to eradicate the public spaces in which New York’s most destitute struggled to survive? Finally, how did the Giuliani administration operate in its drive to lower crime rates and remove the Big Apple’s image of disorderliness, and who were most affected?
BTW–\”Broken windows\” policing theorized that by removing images of disorderliness and petty crime, larger (and more violent) crimes could be eliminated. The theory rested on this tenet: if a window is left broken in a given neighborhood, it is not only disorderly, but attracts outside criminals who believe crime will be tolerated–thus, if the window, or disorder, is repaired, then criminals will know to go elsewhere. While it sounds practical, when applied to society, it meant that homeless men and other destitute individuals were reconceptualized as \”broken windows\”–as objects of disorder that needed to be swept away (but if you\’re homeless, where do you go: don\’t you have the right to be in public?). During the 1980s and 1990s, as neoliberal and neoconservative agendas reigned in NYC and much of the nation, homeless populations swelled, particularly in cities like New York. This was also a time in which mayoral administrations struggled to craft a new image for the Big Apple (one away from its image of fiscal/urban crisis). Caught up in this fight to \”clean up the city\” were those in abject poverty.
