Question 1

Consider “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson”.  In her narrative, Rowlandson provides an account of the time she spent in captivity.  The narrative documents the abduction of Rowlandson and the death of some of her family members, and clearly one of the purposes of the work is to describe this terrible time in her life.  However, the narrative also serves to describe the Native American culture.  Rowlandson makes several observations about the similarities/differences in cultural traditions between the Native Americans and the European settlers.  Discuss one similarity and one difference that Rowlandson describes.  What is her attitude toward these differences?

Question 2

Consider Douglass’s speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”  What logic does he use to make his point?  His speech contains a lot of emotion, including anger.  His anger is certainly justified, but does his anger take away from the effectiveness from his argument?  Describe a time when you argued a position you were angry about.  Were you able to make an effective argument?  Why or why not?

Question 3

Consider Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.”  A common (mis)interpretation of the poem is that it’s about taking the nontraditional path.  However, it seems to be more about a poem about rationalizing one’s actions, as described in the video below.  After reviewing the video, comment on this tendency of humans to rationalize actions.  Why would this narrator tell a story where he/she clearly alters events?

Although some states and cities have passed laws to ban texting and using handheld phones while driving, there is no current law to ban all cell phone use while driving. However, according to the National Safety Council (2009), 28 percent of all crashes—1.6 million per year—are caused by cell phone use and texting by drivers. The mission of a new national nonprofit organization called FocusDriven, patterned after Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is to make phone use while driving as illegal and socially unacceptable as drunk driving. US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood supports FocusDriven and its efforts.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, LaHood said that this movement would become “an army of people traveling the countryside” to push for bans on cell-phone use and tough enforcement (Schmitz, 2010). As a political advocate interested in this issue, you will be writing a policy proposal that utilizes the current research to propose a solution to the issue and submitting it in Module 5.

Annotated Bibliography: Effect of Cell Phone Use

Before you can write this proposal research, you will need to conduct initial research on the science behind this initiative. For this assignment, use the Argosy University online library resources to locate research reports from peer-reviewed journals that discuss the effects of cell phone use on vision, attention, perception, or memory. In selecting at least five research reports from peer-reviewed journals relevant to the topic, make sure they address one or more of the following issues:

• How do texting, handheld phones, and hands-free phones compare with each other in their effects on driving?
• How do other, traditional distractions compare to cell phone use in their effects on driving (such as eating, attending to children, talking to passengers, listening to music/news, etc.)?

In Week Two, you created a presentation on why linking assessments with report cards that reflect CCSS is imperative. In this discussion, you expand on your knowledge about CCSS and debate the idea of whether creating high-quality assessments is necessary. Note that some educators argue that it is not enough to just create a link between assessments and report cards, but that assessments need to be high level and should require students to synthesize their learning instead of only demonstrating mastery by rote memory. Alternatively, some educators argue that high-quality assessments cost more than lower quality assessments (Eisner, 2001; Matthews, 2006; Pulfrey, Buch, & Butera, 2011). One possible reason for this viewpoint is that higher-level assessments often include performance tasks and/or essays that require teacher scoring, and thus a great deal of time is spent on evaluating students’ work. Conversely, lower-level assessments measuring basic knowledge through multiple-choice and true/false responses; they can be measured using technology and take considerably less time and resources to measure.

First, choose a side from the two opposing viewpoints described above and discuss one of these two points:

Creativity and Innovation

Educators strive to create a classroom that instills creativity and innovation. In this discussion, you will think about the creative and innovative instructional approach known as the the flipped classroom while making direct connections to the Common Core State Standards and teacher decision making based on student assessments. Reflecting on your previous discussion on CCSS in Week Two as well as your previous discussions from EDU671: Fundamentals of Educational Research about the flipped classroom, you will complete the three parts of this discussion’s initial post.

There are three parts to this discussion, which are described below.

Part 1

o    Discuss how the flipped classroom idea can be used in conjunction with CCSS (Math or English Language Arts)
