You are a state court judge who has been presented with the following facts. A criminal defendant was stopped by police after an officer observed him speeding. A computer check showed that the man had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for his arrest. While he was being arrested, a marijuana joint fell from his pocket. The officer searched his car and found additional illegal drugs. The warrant information was subsequently discovered to be inaccurate in the computer system- it had been dismissed. The defendant files a motion to suppress the drug evidence.

Evaluating Employee Characteristics

Some research studies (Ilies & Judge, 2003; Saari & Judge, 2004) report that genetics play a very important part in whether an employee has job satisfaction. Their work suggests that the attitudes, personality, and values that a person brings to the workplace are better predictors of whether the employee will be satisfied than any of the external factors a company or manager might provide the employee. In fact, their studies indicate that a person with high satisfaction will generally report being highly satisfied, no matter the situation within the company. Similarly, a person who reports low satisfaction will consistently report low satisfaction, no matter what the company may do to increase the employee’s satisfaction.

If these studies are correct, then there would seem to be some rationality in only hiring applicants with positive personalities.

In this assignment, you will develop a ten item survey that will be given to all applicants at your company. The purpose of this survey is to determine whether the applicant is a positive or negative person. First determine what attitudes, personality characteristics, and values you want to look for based upon your reading and research.You may ask up to nine questions to determine those individual characteristics. This discussion assignment is designed to help you understand how to read and interpret a philosophical text. Read the assigned readings from the textbook and the online lectures on Socrates and Plato as background before completing the assignment.

2. Present a 2–3-page interpretation of one of these passages in your own words. You are encouraged to cite the original text, the online lectures, and the course textbook as support for your interpretation. 3. Compare your interpretation to at least one of the scholarly approaches outlined in the “How to Read Platonic Dialogue” online lecture.

• How does your peer’s interpretation compare to your own and the scholarly approaches presented in the textbook and lectures?

Successful public policies often hinge upon the ability of talented leaders to develop, promote, and execute those public policies.  In a two- to three page paper (not including the title and reference pages), discuss which leadership traits you feel are the most important in the creation of sound public policies.  Some questions to consider are: does a leader’s educational background matter significantly in providing leadership in the policy making process?  Do leaders need to have a military background in order to execute successful policies involving the armed forces?  Is it necessary for strong leaders in the policy making arena to have traveled widely and to have had significant foreign policy experience?
