Discussion 1: Accuracy in Financial Reporting

A sale is a sale, and a profit is a profit, right? Not always. While an organization’s financial statements should fully and transparently reflect the organization’s actual financial situation, sometimes they do not. Sometimes there is intentional deception or fraud. Yet, even when an organization uses legal and accepted accounting practices, financial statements may fail to present risks or explain unusual costs, profits, or assumptions.

To prepare for this Discussion, think about a time in your professional experience when a decision was made based on inaccurate financial information or unethical behavior resulting in fraudulent financial information. If you do not have professional experience directly related to accounting and decision making, research a situation where inaccurate or fraudulent financial information was provided by a company. Consider the outcomes of utilizing fraudulent financial information for decision making and research how to avoid such situations.

Post by Day 3, the following:

• Describe the situation from either your professional experience or your research.
• Explain the steps you would take to address unethical behavior and remedy the situation of utilizing the inaccurate or fraudulent financial information you described and why you would take these steps.
• Explain the steps that you, as a manager, might take to ensure that all financial information you review accurately reflects the organization’s true financial situation and why this is important to prevent unethical behavior and the use of inaccurate or fraudulent financial information.

General Guidance: Your initial Discussion post, due by Day 3, will typically be 2–3 paragraphs in length as a general expectation/estimate. Refer to the rubric for the Week 1 Discussion for grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use the rubric to assess your work.

• Suggest additional steps that managers might take to ensure accurate data and provide examples of when such steps have been taken, including the resulting outcomes.
• Ask a probing question of your colleague, based on your readings from the week and/or your experience. You should be sure to include the context for your question and why it is important to address.
• Compare your colleague’s situation with the one you presented and share any insights you gained.

Over the course of this class, your Learning Team will develop a comprehensive Managing Change Paper. Each week, your team will add more elements to this paper. By the final week, you will have a cumulative paper that addresses the complete change cycle.

Select a team member’s work organization. Identify a specific change that your Learning Team feels should occur in the selected organization.

Prepare a 800 -word paper describing the cycle of change, and the specific change that needs to occur within the cycle of change. Be sure to:

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines

All land within the municipality of Springfield is zoned for either agricultural, residential or commercial use.  You have just purchased a parcel of agricultural land for $20,000 in the expectation that it will be rezoned next year.  But the rezoning is controversial, and will be decided by the full City Council rather than just the Zoning Commission.

According to your inside sources, there’s a 30% chance the land will be rezoned for commercial use; in that event, you’ll be able to sell the land for $50,000.  But the populists on the Council are pushing for more affordable housing; if they win the vote, which your sources think has a likelihood of 50%, then the land will be rezoned for residential use, and you’ll only be able to sell it for $30,000.  Of course, the Greens may win, and the land won’t be rezoned at all.  In that event, it will still be worth what you paid for it, but no more than that.

You’ve just been approached by Mr. Hi Roller.  He’s a land speculator like yourself, but he doesn’t have your inside sources.  He thinks the land will be rezoned next year, and has offered you $30,000 cash for it, right now.

Which alternative should you choose?  Explain your decision process in detail.

Assignment Expectations

• Provide a table summarizing the factual data.
• Explain the computations used to obtain the numbers in the table.

Section 5: Physical Fitness

As you have been learning, your knowledge about the nutritional and fitness needs of children will have the greatest impact when you can share this knowledge in order to help children and their families grow in awareness of and commitment to healthy behaviors and lifestyles. For your blog section this week, prepare a 2-page fact sheet to inform both early childhood professionals and families about the essential aspects of physical fitness for preschool-age children. Use the following guidelines:

Write an introductory paragraph or at least five bullet points that explain why physical fitness is so important for young children. Include at least three developmental skills that children are learning at this age, and describe how physical activities can help children toward mastery of these skills. Be sure to cite evidence from the learning resources or, if desired, use other resources to support your claims.

• Explain what can happen when children do not engage in healthy fitness activities. Be sure to consider the impact on children of being overweight or obese, including implications for health and self-esteem.
• Indicate how adults can help children develop good fitness habits. Describe at least two activities, such as specific games or movements, which are appropriate and enjoyable for children of this age. At least one of the activities should involve gross-motor (locomotor) skills, and another should involve fine-motor (manipulative) skills. Remember, the activities you recommend should be developmentally appropriate, which includes noncompetitive.
• Based on your readings, include at least one inspirational, thought-provoking quote that captures your attitude and/or philosophy about fostering children’s healthy growth and development.
• For your fact sheet, draw on the information in the fitness articles from this week’s Required Resources and your own research to provide evidence about the positive impact that physical activity has on children’s health, both now and in the future. Be sure to cite your sources.

• Analyze a personal relationship you have or have had (or a relationship of someone you know well). This relationship may be a romantic relationship or a friendship.
• Briefly identify the type of relationship you are using as your example and describe it in terms of love styles.
• Select at least four concepts or theories from your readings that describe the relationship and how this relationship developed in more depth.
• Finally, select a culture presented in one of the articles listed. Make a brief statement about how some of the concepts or theories might be different if the relationship in your example occurred in another culture or if one of the individuals in this relationship was from this other culture.

• Describe your typical sleep habits over the course of the week. For example, do you sleep longer on weekends than weekdays? Do you get up and go to bed at approximately the same time every day? Do you take naps?
• Explain what biological, environmental, and cultural factors you believe influence your sleep habits and why you believe your sleep habits exist as they do.
• Explain whether or not you think your sleep practices are typical for your culture and why.
• Briefly summarize the research findings from the article. Who were the participants, what procedure was used to study them, and what were the results?
• From the article, what influences appear to have had an influence on sleep patterns or practices? What role do you believe culture plays in those differences? How does the cultural influence in this example compare (similarities and differences) to the cultural influences on sleep in your culture?

 

Describe one example from your own experience where you made decisions based on an emotional response. Explain the outcome and whether the decision was successful or not. Describe how you would apply emotional responses to making decisions in the future.

 

The performance appraisal process is intended to measures the degree to which an employee accomplishes work requirements. The majority of the management and HR professionals in U.S. organizations believe in the value of providing regular individual performance appraisals. DO THEY REALLY?

 

How often do you receive a performance appraisal or discuss your performance with your manager? Discuss the positive and/or negative experiences you have had when receiving performance appraisals. What opportunities for improvement existed?

 

If you have limited experience with performance evaluations, conduct research on the topic and share your opinion.

What are the two major types of interest groups and examples of each? Which of these types of interest groups tend to be more powerful? Explain your answer.

Discuss the advertising techniques implemented in each to help teach, to inform and to persuade consumers. Which do you feel is the most effective form of advertising and why? Identify the cues, or stimuli, used in the ads to direct consumer behavior. What responses do you think these brands are looking for from their viewers? How well was the three-hit theory implemented in these ads? Discuss your overall thoughts on brand positioning in these ads.
