This Forum includes several steps: (all are required)

 

  • Identify a topic of interest and write a research problem, based on your topic of interest, that specifically looks at the relationship between two variables.  (My topic is bullying)

  • Specify the unit of analysis in your research problem.

  • Identify the two variables in your research problem – include: which is the independent variable (IV) and which is the dependent variable (DV); and specify the variable ‘type’ i.e. categorical/nominal; continuous/interval.

  • Provide an operational definition for each of your two variables. (if this is really difficult, your variable is not specific enough, and you should further narrow your variable and research problem).

  • Write a hypothesis for your research problem (i.e. what direction do you think the relationship between your two variables will be)

What types of consequences can follow from people having more choices of what media they can consume?Explain.

The media we consume affects us, but we also affect it. Most people think that they perceive truth objectively, as it is. However, we all see things from a point of view. Furthermore, people tend to seek media that supports their points of view. This can serve to further entrench us in a more narrow way of looking at things while at the same time making us feel more certain that our point of view is objective and neutral. We also learned in Chapter 8 that people have biases (such as the confirmation bias) that make it hard for them to embrace ideas that contradict with their own points of view. This week’s discussion seeks to explore how we can free ourselves from these tendencies.

Prepare: Before addressing this discussion, take a look at the following video about the relationship between media and ideology [Link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4-XVZ7GQD8] Make sure to read Chapter 8, for example on “Media and Mediated Images” (including all sub-headings).

Reflect: Think about the ways in which people consume media that supports their own points of view. Consider what we might do to learn to think more objectively and see things from multiple points of view.

Write: Answer the following questions:

In what ways are people manipulated by the media that they consume? Make sure to give specific examples.

What role did the larger community play in the success of the Montgomery Bus boycott? Explain.

1. What were the differences regarding segregation the North vs. segregation in the South?
2. What role did the larger community play in the success of the Montgomery Bus boycott? If the community played a large role in the outcome/success of the civil rights movement, did African American constitute more of a community in the South vs. the North?
3.  What did the Civil Rights Act of 1964 address?
4.   The most successful tactic that was the most influential in providing the needed legislation for equal civil and social rights was the use of the boycott. Although African Americans were gaining some sympathy for the protesters who were being attacked in the South there was never a huge grassroots movement where while northern liberals threw all of their support behind the protesters, as such the majority of northern liberals were not affected by the images of brutality and violence. It was only when African Americans began to boycott white business (large chain department stores) that changed the social policy in the South. In fact there are many historians who concluded that many of business owners soon realized that both black dollars and white dollars were the same color…GREEN! So that question that I have for you is regarding the primarily motivations of Americans both then and now. Are Americans motivated primarily by money and not out of moral conscious? If we are primarily motivated by money what does that say about the integrity of nation both then and now? If the laws of social legislation which come as a result of the civil rights movement come largely from the motivations of money/financial enrichment and not from the resolve to do the right thing, what does this say about American culture? Have things gotten better or worse?

Question #1

What is the role of the manager in an organization? The role of the manager traditionally has been the person who has set short term goals for the organization to execute and perform tasks that include the process, procedure, and production of the organization’s purpose or vision. The modern role of the manager has developed to include the role of facilitator in the way the manager accomplishes these tasks.

 

Compare and contrast the role of management in the 20th century organization and the role of management in the 21st century. How has the change in the purpose of businesses (i.e. manufacturing vs. service) and business environment, worker attitudes, and behaviors affected the role of the manager in an organization? Discuss in detail.

Option 1: Police investigating the scene of a sexual assault recover a large blanket that they believe may contain useful physical evidence.  They take it to the laboratory for a test for the presence of semen.  The serologist asks if the investigator knows of Respond to one of the following:

anything that might recently have been spilled on the blanket.  The investigator reports that an overturned bowl of grapes and watermelon was found on the scene, as well as broken glass that had contained wine.  The scientist selects and administers the best test for analyzing that blanket.  The blanket shows a positive reaction after three minutes of the completion of the test.  What test was probably used and what was the conclusion?  Explain your answer.

Option 2: Criminalist Cathy is collecting evidence from the victim of a sexual assault.  She places a sheet on the floor, asks the victim to disrobe, and places the clothing in a paper bag.  After collecting pubic combings and pubic hair samples, she takes two vaginal swabs, which she allows to air-dry before packaging.  Finally she collects blood, urine, and scalp hair samples from the victim.  What mistakes, if any, did Cathy make in collecting this evidence?

Option 3: A woman reports being mugged by a masked assailant, whom she scratched on the arm during a struggle.  The victim gives the police a good description of her attacker, but she is not sure whether the assailant was male or female.  Describe the steps and procedures you might use to determine the sex of the attacker.

Option 4: Police discover a badly decomposed body buried in an area where a man disappeared some years ago.  The case was never solved, nor was the victim’s body ever recovered.  As the lead investigator, you suspect the body is that of the missing victim.  What is your main challenge in using DNA to determine whether it is or is not? How would you go about using DNA technology to test your theory?
