Evaluate the organizational environment in the health care industry to recognize how technology solutions enable strategic outcomes.

Before you begin this assignment, be sure you have read the “UMUC Family Clinic Case Study” and your Week 1 and Week 2 readings, which discuss Electronic Health Record (EHR) functionality and Process Workflow Analysis and Mapping.

Purpose of this Assignment

This assignment gives you the opportunity to apply your analysis skills to model a health care business process in an ambulatory setting. Modeling the process as it exists (and as it will exist) will aid in the analysis, selection and implementation of the EHR system for the medical practice. In this assignment, you will develop 2 process maps (AS-IS and TO-BE) for the patient visit clinical process workflow. This assignment addresses the following course outcome to enable you to:

  • Evaluate the organizational environment in the health care industry to recognize how technology solutions enable strategic outcomes.
  • Analyze the flow of data and information among disparate health information systems to support internal and external business processes.

Family Clinic Medical Practice

In order to apply technology to a process, the process must be thoroughly understood and models are used for this purpose. The model also supports business process analysis and redesign when the process is deemed to be inefficient or ineffective. In addition, models are used to design the “TO-BE” process that describes the desired end state after the technology solution is developed.

In analyzing and improving clinical processes, one should consider the following questions:

  • Are administrative processes organized, efficient, and well documented?
  • Are clinical workflows efficient, clearly mapped out, and understood by all staff?
  • Are data collection and reporting processes well established and documented?

For your Stage 1 Project for the Case Study, you will develop model of the patient visit process used at the UMUC Family Clinic. You will create a model of that process which defines in detail the steps in the process as they are done today. Then, you will create a model of the proposed new process, as it will be performed after an EHR system (IT solution) is implemented.

Assignment

For this assignment you will:

  1. List at least three objectives or goals that Dr. Martin has, and briefly explain how an EHR system can help him with each objective. Note that a minimum of 4 objectives or goals are needed to earn the full points.
  2. Next you will model the patient visit process as it is currently performed at the UMUC Family Clinic; this is the AS-IS Process. Draw a process model to show the major steps in the patient’s visit to the UMUC Family Clinic from the time they arrive until they leave.  This patient is a returning patient, will receive a prescription based on earlier blood test results sent from the laboratory, and his insurance company will be billed for the visit.  You must refer to the AS-IS process as described in the case, cover all the current steps and be careful not to oversimplify.  The objective here is to correctly map the current state of the process, so the improvements offered by the TO-BE process (Item 3 below) are clear.  “Patient enters –> gets prescription –> leaves office (insurance company is billed)” is not a reflection of the current state.
  3. Then you will model the way that you expect the new patient visit process to function after a technology solution (EHR System) is implemented and the process is improved; this is the TO-BE Process. NOTE: We are NOT specifying the specific technology in the TO-BE Process. Identifying the specific technology will be part of a later stage assignment.

As you develop your models, review the Week 2 readings on processes, process analysis and process modeling. You will use flowchart symbols to indicate process steps, decision points, etc. The flowchart symbols to be used and examples of how to use them to illustrate the work flow can be found in the “Flowchart” lecture. You may use Microsoft Word, Excel or Power Point to develop your process models. If you use another product, it is your responsibility to ensure it can be read using the Microsoft Office products.

Describe your recommended approach and the expected impact of that approach on job performance.

Review the team report on MPBS located in the Case Study Overview.

In this assignment you are expected to recommend the most appropriate method of job evaluation to use at MPBS and support your recommendations with your rationale. Your recommendation should consider the organization’s comprehensive job structure with major occupational groups including scientific, administrative, sales, management, and technical. Your rationale must be backed up with support from the text and/or other articles you may have researched.

Your recommendations must cover the following:

  • Describe your recommended approach and the expected impact of that approach on job performance.   Address key HR and compensation issues identified at MPBS.
  • Differentiate the components that would need to be included if MPBS were to use a point-based method as compared to a ranking and to a classification method.
  • Provide a list of compensable factors for a point-based method and the factor weights you would suggest if using that method.
  • Explain how your recommended method of job evaluation aligns with MPBS’s strategic focus.
  • Describe the key challenges to effective implementation of the recommended approach to job evaluation at MPBS.

Compare and contrast how state and local governments mirror the 3 branches of US government.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 300–500 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

  • What are the 3 branches of the U.S. government? Explain.
  • Describe what the powers are for each branch.
  • Compare and contrast how state and local governments mirror the 3 branches of US government. Do the 3 branches of state and local governments function in the same manner as their federal government versions? Explain.
  • Give your definition of corruption in government. Provide examples of corruption that might exist in each branch of government.
  • Consider your state and local governments. Where have you personally observed more evidence of corruption in government – at the federal, state or local level? Provide examples of corruption you have observed to support your answer.

Do the elements that you have selected meet the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act’s 3 stages of meaningful use?Explain.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Step 1: In preparation for the electronic health record (EHR) implementation, you are assisting the information technology (IT) and admissions departments in creating a data dictionary for the master patient index (MPI). Discuss the following:

  • Describe 3 data elements that are contained in the MPI.
  • State what is acceptable data for each element.
    • For example, the element of marital status must allow the terms singlemarriedwidowed, and so forth.
  • Do the elements that you have selected meet the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act’s 3 stages of meaningful use?
  • Discuss how this relates to the patient access and billing functions within a health care organization.

Step 2: While working with the IT and clinical departments, you are assisting them in creating a drop-down menu for the histories that are recorded in the patient record. You will be responsible for making sure that 2 types of histories include all of the elements required. Choose 2 of the following histories, and list the elements that must be included as part of that history:

  • Past medical history
  • Chief complaint
  • Past surgical history
  • Past family history
  • Social history

Be sure to support your information by citing at least 2 references using APA format.

Explain whether any motor tasks or skills can be accomplished via observational learning. Justify your response.

Assignment 1: LASA 2—Observational and Motor Learning

During the period of early childhood, mastering fine motor skills is a very important process needed for physical and cognitive development. However, for a number of different reasons, there are some children who do not develop at the same pace as an average child. It is important for parents and physicians to recognize children who are not on track developmentally because the earlier the cause of the delay can be determined, the earlier parents can start working with the child to correct or minimize these deficits. Often, the earlier the children begins to work on their developmental deficits, the greater the advancements they can make.

By the age of three, a child should be able to do the following:

  • Use a spoon by themselves
  • Draw a vertical and horizontal line
  • String large beads
  • Snip paper with scissors
  • Roll clay or play dough into a “snake”

Conduct an Internet search using the two phrases listed below. Your results will help you better understand the kind of milestones that are used to assess the development of fine motor skills in young children.

  • Fine motor skills milestones
  • Child development milestones

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research observational and motor learning and activities that can be used to help develop motor skills. Then, address the following:

  • Describe in detail how a young child’s fine motor skills are developed—making sure to include the theory of motor-skill learning that best fits this situation.
  • Explain whether any motor tasks or skills can be accomplished via observational learning. Justify your response.
  • Now, consider a situation in which a young child (3–4 years old) is developmentally delayed in fine motor skill development. Create a strategy which would help the child strengthen his or her fine motor skills.
  • You can find a number of activities online which purport to help develop these skills. From a theoretical viewpoint, be sure to explain how these activities will aid a child’s fine motor skill development. Make sure that you reference at least one peer-reviewed article in addition to any Web sites you find and describe these activities as part of your development strategy.

Write a 5 page paper in Word format. It should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with regular one-inch margins and free of typographical and grammatical errors. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

How could the principles of observational learning help to improve the classroom behavior of students with behavioral disorders or social skill deficits?Explain.

One of the top issues in special education is the ongoing debate of “inclusion versus segregation.” The idea of inclusion in education is that all students, no matter what disability they may have, should learn together in the same environment. Fully inclusive schools do not differentiate between special education courses and general education courses, but rather include students with learning, emotional, behavioral, or physical disabilities in classes with all of the other students.

The idea of segregation in education suggests that there are benefits to providing classes separate from general education classes that meet the needs of students with special needs. For some students, this may be for just one or two subjects, while for other students, this encompasses all of their courses.

In this assignment, you will consider those students who suffer from behavioral disorders or social skill deficits.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research observational learning. Then, address the following:

  • Based on your learning about observational learning in this module, what are the benefits that these students could gain through their inclusion into a regular classroom?
  • How could the principles of observational learning help to improve the classroom behavior of students with behavioral disorders or social skill deficits?
  • What are some of the classroom disadvantages for employing inclusion for other typically developing students?
  • Do you support the move toward inclusion? Why or why not?

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Be sure to include a title page and a reference page.

Examine the overall manner in which formal and informal institutions combine to influence firm behavior.

WRITE ON YOUR OWN WORDS. TYPE EACH QUESTION BEFORE ANSWER THEM

  • From the case study, imagine that you are the CEO of Yamakawa Corporation’s U.S. subsidiary. You are faced with the dilemma of either cutting salaries or cutting jobs. Analyze the role that institutions, cultures, and ethics played in this case and determine whether you will cut salaries or jobs. Provide a rationale for your decision.
  • Examine the overall manner in which formal and informal institutions combine to influence firm behavior. Provide two (2) examples that depict the effects that formal and informal institutions can have on a firm’s strategy.

hat are five symbols important to American culture? Are they important to you? How and why? Explain.

During this second module, we focus upon the concept of culture and all its components. After you have read the reading assignment and lectures for this module, please respond to all parts of the discussion by Saturday, January 16, 2016:

  1. The sociologist, Robin Williams Jr., originally created a list of ten central values in American culture in 1970.
  • How do you believe this list might be different if it were created today?
  • Which values do you believe have changed since this list was originally made? Why?
  • Please use examples to illustrate how these values have changed using the media, social policy, politics, or otherwise.

What are five symbols important to American culture?  Are they important to you?  How and why?  What problems arise from excessive ethnocentrism?

Remember to also respond to the posts of at least two others in our class.
