“Deviance and Social Class”  Please respond to one (1) of the following:

• Sociologists explain deviance by three (3) major perspectives: biological, functional conflict, and symbolic interaction. Identify your role, for example, as a parent and which perspective best reflects your personal experience. Discuss the main reasons why this perspective is relevant.
• Review Figure 7.1: “Class in the United States” on page 159 of the textbook, in particular, the typical incomes. Speculate on the typical per capita income for your area. Next, go to the United States Census Bureau’s Website, located athttp://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/index.html, to determine the actual per capita for your county or region. Compare your perception of your area’s per capita and the actual per capita for your area. If you were close, provide a rationale for your speculation. If there was a major discrepancy between your speculation and the actual per capita, suggest a reason for the discrepancy.

• Thinking back on the last few months, consider a time when you encountered a friend or business associate who promised or agreed to do something but did not follow through. For example, did someone agree to sell you something but at the last minute changed the price? Or did someone agree to perform a service, but then later said he or she was too busy?
• Relate the facts of your example. Then, based on the materials in the reading and lecture, explain why the facts you presented did or did not meet the legal requirements for a contract. Be sure to support your response.

• Identify and discuss the key steps in the closing process that provide the most opportunity to make mistakes in processing account transactions. Why did you select these steps and what makes them confusing?
• Make at least two (2) recommendations for improving the accuracy and reliability of the information in the gaps that you have identified.
• Justify your response.

This discussion is an opportunity to further demonstrate your ability to apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to the design of instruction and assessment. As you learned last week from reading Edyburn (2013) Chapter 5 and viewing the CAST (2010) video UDL at a Glance, the three main principles supporting UDL are to Provide Multiple Means of (a) Representation (the “what of learning), (b) Action and Expression (the “how” of learning), and (c) Engagement (the “why” of learning). For this discussion you will review technology checkpoints as they relate to the three main principles of UDL. IT may be helpful to review the Week Three Instructor Guidance page where UDL is explored in the intellectual elaboration and to take time now to review your feedback from the Week Three assessments as well. Then, to prepare for this discussion, read the Week Four Instructor Guidance and then visit the UDL Guidelines – Version 2.0: Examples and Resources (2014) website. At the website, select the principle you have been assigned based on your last name using the list below. You will then complete the following checkpoint below from the principle you have been assigned to review.

Within the checkpoint there are several examples and/or resources that support the principle and checkpoint. Next, choose one example/resource that interests you to explore, interact with, and evaluate. You may also choose to consider examples geared toward the grade level you are currently teaching, have experience in, or intend to teach.

Initial Post: Create a Jing tutorial or other multimedia-based presentation with software such as Present.me to showcase the specific UDL checkpoint example selected. Include the link to your Jing tutorial or presentation featuring the example/resource selected as well as written responses to the discussion points below. Your written response needs to be between one and two paragraphs in length. One of the ways to make your discussion engaging and effective is by including audio of your voice alongside a presentation of the information you have investigated. You can talk through these points during your tutorial. Keep in mind, the maximum length of a Jing video is five minutes so it will help to create a presentation in PowerPoint first that is five slides long with each slide covering one of the five points below. Leadership via “vision” is necessary for success. Discuss in detail the qualities that a leader must exhibit in order to be considered visionary and how these qualities may be learned and developed. • Describe the various transmission mediums and explain the best use of each with various examples of business use.

In recent years, hormone replacement therapy has become a controversial issue. When prescribing therapies, advanced practice nurses must weigh the strengths and limitations of the prescribed supplemental hormones. If advanced practice nurses determine that the limitations outweigh the strengths, then they might suggest alternative treatment options such as herbs or other natural remedies, changes in diet, and increase in exercise.

Consider the following scenario:

As an advanced practice nurse at a community health clinic, you often treat female (and sometimes male patients) with hormone deficiencies. One of your patients requests that you prescribe supplemental hormones. This poses the questions: How will you determine what kind of treatment to suggest? What patient factors should you consider? Are supplemental hormones the best option for the patient, or would they benefit from alternative treatments?

To prepare:

• Review Chapter 56 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text, as well as the Holloway and Makinen and Huhtaniemi articles in the Learning Resources.
• Review the provided scenario and reflect on whether or not you would support hormone replacement therapy.
• Locate and review additional articles about research on hormone replacement therapy for women and/or men. Consider the strengths and limitations of hormone replacement therapy.
• Based on your research of the strengths and limitations, again reflect on whether or not you would support hormone replacement therapy.
• Consider whether you would prescribe supplemental hormones or recommend alternative treatments to patients with hormone deficiencies.
