Prepare a training guide with the following:

  1. Define and compare the following theories: expectations theory, liquidity theory, market segmentation theory, and preferred habitat hypothesis theory.
  2. In 2–3 pages, explain how each of the above theories explain changes in the economy.
  3. Provide examples for each, and be sure to use and properly cite scholarly sources.

Explain the concept of cohort effects. What cohort effects (e.g. historical or social events) might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described?

You learned in your readings that parenting practices and techniques used to shape child development are influenced by many factors including culture, socioeconomic status, non-normative life events, and cohort effects. To understand cohort effects, consider that the experiences of a child growing up in the 1940s are different in many ways from a child growing up today.

Read the article: Kotchick, B.A. & Forehand, R. (2002). Putting parenting in perspective: A discussion of the contextual factors that shape parenting practices. Journal of Child and Family Studies, 11(3), 255-269.

Synthesize what you learned in your readings as well as the above article to address the following:

  • Using the chart/table below, list at least 4 parenting practices of 3 generations. (Note: Parenting practices are not the same as parenting styles, which will be discussed later in the course). You can describe parenting practices of 3 generations of your family members, another family you interview, or general practices of generations based on research you find. For example, how did each generation address issues such as education, extracurricular activities, breastfeeding, sleeping arrangements, religious involvement, etc.?  Include brief demographic information (e.g., sex, age, region of the country) Note: 3 different generations means 3 different time periods, not 3 different people.
  • Now review the chart/table and discuss the following:
    • How were the parenting practices similar and different between generations?
    • Explain the concept of cohort effects. What cohort effects (e.g. historical or social events) might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described?
    • Identify and explain contextual factors (other than cohort effects) described by Kotchick and Forehand (2002) that might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described.
    • Why is it important to understand contextual factors, including cohort effects, when researching differences in parenting practices?

Discuss what it is and how it relates and/or exemplifies an idea in the book.

Explain how and why the conflict in this comedy is different from and/or similar to the conflict explored in tragedy.

Discussion 1

Macbeth is often considered one of literature’s greatest tragedies, not only because of Macbeth’s tragic fall from grace, but because of how the play relates to human nature and the conflicts inherent in human nature. Think of what kinds of conflicts you saw in Macbeth. Consider what literary techniques helped convey the conflict

  • State a conflict that you see present in Macbeth (please refer to the list of conflicts).
  • Respond to one of the following and provide specific textual examples:
    • Describe a key conflict in the play and how it corresponds to a character’s development.
    • Describe two key literary techniques and elements of drama that aid in developing the conflict.
    • Explain how the conflict identified in the play relates to human nature and the human condition.

Discussion 2

Reflect on Mistaken Identity: A Ten Minute Play. This is a modern comedy that centers on the quest for love and understanding. Consider whether the function of the conflict in this play and the way the literary elements and techniques enhance the conflict is different from what we studied in Macbeth.

  • State a conflict that you see present in Mistaken Identity: A Ten Minute Play (please refer to the list of conflicts )
  • Respond to one of the following, providing examples or quotations from the play to illustrate your ideas:
    • Describe a key conflict in the play and how it corresponds to a character’s development.
    • Describe two key literary techniques and elements and techniques of drama that aid in developing the conflict.
    • Explain how and why the conflict in this comedy is different from and/or similar to the conflict explored in tragedy.

Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

Choose one (1) of the three (3) reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by major authors. Read the selections  as identified with each topic below. Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (250 words minimum) which analyzes the “surprise ending” of the reading selection.

Topic Choices:

  • Reading selection from Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a  proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located at http://www.earlymoderntexts.com/assets/pdfs/descartes1637.pdf (then scroll down to Part 4, pp. 14-18). This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work.
  • Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. Read and focus on A Modest Proposal located at http://www.victorianweb.org/previctorian/swift/modest.html.
  • Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. These selections can be found on pp. 840-841 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 824-825.

For the reading selection you choose:

  1. Clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end.
  2. Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Use the source(s) identified above for the topic you choose, focusing on the main primary source of that author.
