State Unger’s analysis of knowledge. Then describe Unger’s crystal -ball
example–the “gypsy” example. (See pp. 163-164.) What does Unger build into
the example for thinking that the boy knows what the crystal ball reports? What
does he build into the example for thinking that the boy is not justified in
believing what the crystal ball reports? Does the boy know? Why or why not?
Maximum: 260 words
What will I be looking for: A coherent, concise, well-written essay that (i) states
Unger’s analysis and his crystal-ball example, (ii) that also states why,
according to Unger, the boy knows the propositions reported by the crystal ball
and (iii) why, according to Unger, the boy is not justified in believing the
propositions reported by the crystal ball. Also, say what you think and why
about whether the boy knows. Unger’s article should be listed in the references.
(Of course, any other sources you use also need to be properly cited and
referenced.)
Other important information: 1. I take the maximum length seriously; I stop
reading at the maximum. 2. Be sure to read over the Formats-for-Papers page;
it includes information on how the papers should be turned in and on how to
include citations and references. 3. This should mostly be a straightforward
expository paper. Don’t try to do too much!

Short Papers

These papers will usually be less than a page long. Though a title would nice, there should be no separate title page. The title should only occur where the paper begins.

Typically, these papers do not need an introduction or a conclusion.

All papers should be typed, double-spaced, with a standard 12 point font.

Do not put your name anywhere on the front of the paper. Instead, fold the paper from left to right, and print your name in the upper corner. This allows me to grade each paper without knowing who the author is. (This instills a bit more fairness and objectivity into the process.)

I stop reading when I reach the word limit. I base the grade just on what I\’ve read.

1): In Esther Duflo’s talk on TED.com, she starts by making the claim that we simply do not know whether foreign aid has been effective, and then proposes several alternate policies where she says we do have evidence that they are effective at reducing poverty.

A): Why does Duflo argue that we do not know whether foreign aid has been effective?

B): Discuss the arguments that Duflo highlights in the debate on whether to give bednets for free. What does she conclude from that debate? Why does she conclude it?

C): What policies does Duflo identify as having been effective in solving policy?

2): Explain how nutritional constraints could create a poverty trap. Be sure to draw and motivate the production function that creates such a poverty trap. In Poor Economics, Banerjee and Duflo discuss results from a study by John Strauss in Sierra Leone on the underlying production function: describe the results of that study, and draw the production function that it estimates. Do these results support the idea of a nutritional poverty trap? What other arguments are provided in favor or against the presence of a nutritional poverty trap?

Specific instruction
– Identify the target student population, setting (e.g., ESL, EFL, K-12, Immersion, etc.), the specific class where the lessons will be taught, the level of language proficiency of the students, the standards chosen (e.g., TESOL, CASAS, ELP, ACTFL, SIOP, etc.). This should not take more than a paragraph.
– List language learning objectives in terms of what students will be able to do in English by the end of the lesson.

– Discuss the theoretical concepts and pedagogical practices that guided your lesson plan. This section is very important! I am expecting to see 1-2 pages of rationale with explicit reference to course readings.

You recently took the position of Project Executive for a national general contracting company, General Contractor, Inc. (“GCI”). You are in charge of the western region and have assumed responsibility over a new 300 room hotel/resort project in California. The HVAC mechanical subcontractor, Best Mechanical, Inc. (“Best”), has not shown up for work in over one week. Best did not provide a performance bond. No written form of agreement was executed between GCI and Best. Your Project Manager has sent emails, texts, and voice messages to Best. Best’s response was, \”I am not making money on the project so, unless you pay me 35% more, I cannot continue.\” Best also stated that the mechanical drawings and specifications prepared by the owner’s mechanical engineer were horrible, unbuildable, and defective (likely an overstatement). The mechanical work is on the critical path and the Project is being delayed. You have received notices of impacts from the Project delay from other subcontractors and the owner.

c. Prepare a notice letter to the owner requesting a change order for an extension of time and damages due to delays caused by the defective mechanical engineering drawings/specifications.

d. Compose a request for proposal (max 2 pages) and draft subcontract agreement (max 5 pages) for the replacement HVAC mechanical subcontractor.

e. Write up a written protocol (max 1 page) to GCI’s project management team and estimating department that creates a cost code to track additional costs incurred following Best’s default and tracks delays to the schedule.

Second Paper Project Assignment: Defining “Nature”
Define “Nature.”
Go to the Oxford Dictionary, as well as etymology dictionaries (online and in the library). [Note: We aren’t looking for “nature” in terms of trees, animals, and weather!]
Analyze the historical roots of the word. What ancient language does it derive from? What did it originally mean?
What does it mean today? Get at least two current definitions from credible, modern dictionaries.
What do you think the word means for most people today? How does this meaning contrast with its original meaning? Why do you think this difference in meaning exists today?
