Counseling Theories Discussion.

In this discussion you will apply some of your understanding of family therapy to the following scenario:

Debbie is 18 years old and has come in to see a counselor because she knows that she desperately needs help.  Debbie says that she sleeps 14 to 15 hours a day and would probably sleep the whole day if her mother did not wake her up to go to college. She says that she has lost interest in everything. Her parents want her to be a doctor, but she feels that this is not what she wants to be. Debbie prefers to be alone in her room. Her mother constantly nags her about her laziness and sarcastically cuts her down as a way to “motivate” her to do something with her life. Debbie has a very strained relationship with her father who is seldom at home because he is working two jobs. The future seems hopeless to Debbie, and she often thinks about committing suicide, though her parents do not know this. She has thought of cutting her wrist but has not been able to do so. She keeps hoping that she will feel better the next day. Her counselor has diagnosed Debbie with depression and is suggesting that in addition to Debbie’s individual counseling the family also begin counseling sessions.

Please respond to the following questions:

    1. Of the three approaches to family therapy mentioned in the lecture notes this week (Experiential, Structural and Strategic), which do you think Debbie and her family would benefit from most? Give a detailed rationale for your choice with supportive evidence from the case study.
    2. If you were the therapist working with Debbie and her parents, what would you assess as the main problem they are facing as a family? Be detailed in your response and include all three members in your assessment. Since a family system is a unit, all members affect each other.
    3. How would you specifically intervene using the family therapy approach mentioned in question 1? Suggest at least two methods or techniques from your chosen theory that you believe would help this family toward healthier interaction. Explain each of these methods or techniques in detail.

Substance Abuse Assignment 2: Discussion—Evaluating Twelve-Step Programs

The twelve-step program has been a cornerstone of substance abuse treatment for decades. Proponents and opponents of the twelve-step program debate its effectiveness at treatment of substance addiction. These programs are typically supplements to clinical treatment. Some individuals are able to maintain sobriety from participation in a twelve-step program.

Use the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research twelve-step programs, in particular focus your research on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

Using the case study and your research on twelve-step programs and AA, respond to the following:

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of twelve-step programs?
  • Are these programs effective? Please present scholarly evidence when answering this question.
  • How did the client in the case benefit from the program?
  • What were the disadvantages of the program for this client?

Philosophy Work.

  1. What is “happiness”? (remember, this is not the momentary concept)
  2. What actions have you done to achieve happiness? Give two or three examples.
  3. A “right” action must be ethical (although it need not conform to societal standards). What made your actions ethical or “right”? Justify your answer.
  4. What do your actions say about your values and concept as a person?
  5. Choose someone you think exemplifies the ideal ethical person. Explain who and why.
  6. Compare your actions (from #3 and #4) to the person in #5.
  7. Conclusion: Where to you go from here? How can you better achieve happiness, in its highest sense? (Confucius said that the “good man is the one who is always striving to be better.”

A recurrent theme that runs through the various readings is that of “happiness.” However, it is important to clarify that we are not talking about the enjoyment we get from eating an ice cream cone or the pleasure of a warm bed on a cold night. Instead, think of John Stuart Mill’s definition of “higher pleasures” or Plato’s statement that “the unexamined live is not worth living,” or Nietzsche’s “noble man,” or Confucius’ idea of “Ren.” What we are talking about are the ethical actions that identify us as human—in the best way possible

Gender and Sexuality.

Write a five page paper on Gender and Sexuality. Use at least four different resources, such as the media, journals, newspapers, internet, textbook, etc. Make sure you use the APA format. I am giving you three weeks to do your paper, so that means my expectations are high. A rubric will be included. Remember, the policy pertaining to late papers. If you submit your paper on the last day, then I will assume you did a rush job, so please don’t wait until the last minute.

Accountability Standards.

Accountability standards are used to measure an agency’s compliance with the rules and regulations that govern their practice. These standards are set forth by legislators, ethics boards, funding sources, and licensing boards. The main purpose of these standards is to ensure that clients receive the highest level of care.

In this assignment, you will assess the influence of accountability standards on human services work. This exercise will sharpen your ability to recognize the importance of accountability in human services work in addition to encouraging you to process the related challenges in meeting the standards.

Tasks:

Write a 2- to 3-page essay on the influence of accountability standards, leadership style, and diversity on an organization. In the essay, discuss the following:

  • Discuss how standards of care influence direct services.
  • Discuss the influence these standards have on how leaders of agencies manage daily operations in an agency.
  • Discuss the influence of accountability standards on the satisfaction of direct service workers in addition to how this might influence how the workers relate with the managers of the agency.

Professional Learning Community Presentation.

Scenario: You have noticed that your grade-level professional learning community (PLC) team teachers have been using primarily traditional assessments such as chapter tests and quizzes, criterion-referenced tests, districts benchmark tests, and unit tests to assess students. After reading about the importance of balanced and differentiated assessment, you decide to create a presentation for your PLC to inform them of ways to differentiate assessment to meet diverse student needs in your grade level.

Assignment: Create a presentation for your PLC to address the following points:

  1. Describe what it means to change the outcome or product of a lesson, including the rationale for why this is important.
  2. Discuss the changing entry points, including at least five strategies that could be used.
  3. Discuss changing exit points, including at least five strategies that could be used.
  4. Describe at least three possible assessments that could be used with a balanced approach to assessment (e.g., summative, formative, traditional assessments, student portfolios, or performance assessments).
  5. Describe how performance assessment can support student learning, including at least five examples of performance assessments that could be used for various subjects in a particular grade level

Analysis of a Personality.

For this assignment, you will have a chance to put into practice all you have been learning throughout this course. You will analyze the personality development of one of the theorists studied in this course from three different theoretical perspectives.

Choose one of the theorists you have studied this term. Use your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources to research the life history of the theorist.

Do the following:

  1. Describe the major life events of the theorist that you feel influenced his or her personality development.
  2. Describe the cultural influences that had an influence on the chosen theorist’s personality development.
  3. Analyze this person from Freud’s psychoanalytic perspective.
  4. Analyze this person from two other theoretical perspectives studied in this course, except for the trait perspective.
  5. Summarize and present your critical opinion about how well (or not) these theories explain the person.

Computer Science:Pseudocode.

In this assignment, you will design a program to perform the following task:

You are going into the Lawn or House service business. Design and write your program that will prompt the user for a choice of services that you offer. Calculate the total cost for the customer. Also, offer a 10% discount for Senior citizens. You MUST offer at least FOUR services. You may offer whatever service you like and whatever price you like (although you prices should be realistic). You may do either Lawn Service or House Service (or both if you like). Display the final cost to the screen for the user. Include a Welcome message explaining your services. Some possible examples of choices might be:

Lawn Service                                     House Service

Lawn mowing                                    Dusting Whole house or by room

Edging                                              Clean bathrooms
