Reading Response

Please read THE PHILOSOPHY OF SYMBOLIC FORMS that I uploaded.

The response statement is written using objective terms, consistent with the terminology and nomenclature of specific readings. Subjective insights must foreground concepts established from readings, discussions, and assignments. Critical explorations of a reading must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the text’s argument as a basis for critique. These attempts stress the underlying structure of the argument in terms of historical, literary, and theoretical principles.

In response to reading summary prompts, at least 4 quotes are used. A legitimate quote represents a statement (or ideological position) in relation to a concept definition or idea. Whether a student agrees or disagrees with an author’s idea, it is important to quote the idea as stated by the author. Only then can the student offer observations and critique. As a check against misrepresentation and an overuse of paraphrasing, a legitimate quote provides generous context from which concepts are defined and extended.

Particular attention must be given to identifying the work of others. Citations include proper quotation marks and reference/source notes. Images include proper “figure” (fig.) designations and bibliographic references. An updated bibliography must be included with all summary submissions.

Assignment #4

Note: Many people feel uncomfortable completing this exercise, so if you feel this way, you are certainly not alone! Some report feeling grateful after this exercise; others may be angry. The purpose of this exercise is not to suggest that you haven\’t earned your achievements. Rather, it\’s meant to encourage us to consider the ways in which we have certain privileges that other people don\’t (i.e. the privileges that come along with living in an industrialized democracy, such as access to modern medicine, education, etc.). In other words, this is an exercise in considering what it may be like to be someone from a different race, class, gender, religion, nationality, sexuality, etc. This is a safe space to discuss these issues, and I encourage you to be open in your response about how you\’re feeling as you complete this exercise.

Read the following piece by Peggy McIntosh entitled \”White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack\” (link here). Then, answer the following questions:

Describe at least one \”unearned\” privilege that you\’ve experienced in your own life. It can be something that\’s listed in the McIntosh piece, or something that is not included in her list. Explain what the privilege is and how you have benefitted from it, even though it is not something you specifically sought to obtain
How would you update this list, if at all? Are there any privileges that are outdated or no longer relevant? Are there any privileges you would add? Explain your thought process
How did you feel as you read through this list? Why?
Remember that to receive full credit on this assignment, you need to (1) cite the textbook, and (2) cite an outside source (the article provided here does not count as an outside source).

***Citations – This Week Only***

This week, you have three options to satisfy the Evidence portion of the rubric:

Stick with the traditional Evidence requirements (1 citation from the textbook, 1 citation from an outside source, not including the McIntosh article listed above)
Use both of the sources below
Use 1 citation from the textbook, and 1 of the sources below
\”Outside\” Sources

Harvard University\’s Implicit Association Test: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is a highly trusted measure for assessing your associations between two concepts. The test is often used to look for subconscious bias in a variety of areas, such as race, gender, or sexuality. In order to receive points for citing this source, you should (1) take the test of your choice, and (2) provide a brief (1-2 sentence) summary of your results
Buzzfeed\’s \”What is Privilege\” Activity: https://www.buzzfeed.com/dayshavedewi/what-is-privilege?utm_term=.ukXwAN5Jb3#.raQrvgxPAo
This piece includes a short video on how to think about privilege on a variety of dimensions (i.e. race, gender, ability, sexual orientation). This is a helpful resource for those who may have difficulty thinking of unearned privileges of their own

The Role of the Algae Industry

1. Please read articles and answer the question.

How do you see the algae industry evolving, synergistically or antagonistically to biomass? Explain why.

2. Please contribute by responding to your classmates\’ answer. (the classmate answer is below)

The answer is:
Study on the extraction of bio energy from algae, can be traced back to the 1970s oil crisis. In recent years, soaring oil prices lead to algae research into research and development has been accelerated, and the commercialization of the mature stage. Bio fuel technology is not the problem, in 2015 to seize market share in the low price, in 2020 will dominate the bio fuel market.Thurmond believes that compared with the first generation of bio energy, bio energy model has incomparable advantages: first, corn and soybean only on the arable land planting and harvesting; algae in ponds, ditches, beaches and any gally farming on saving valuable land, thus a large number of. This is especially important for countries such as China and India that have a large population and less arable land. In second, an acre (about six acres of arable land Chinese) planting soybeans, rapeseed, palm oil bio Europe, a year can be extracted respectively 50, 150, 650 gallons; and breeding in an acre of water algae, biofuels a year can be extracted from 10000 gallons, the latter are the former 200, 69, 15 times. This is because soybeans and other crops affected by season, a year only a quarter of the algae is generally not affected by the seasons, and multiply very rapidly, one day can be doubled.Third, in the process of photosynthesis in algae, to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide in the air, which can purify the atmosphere, play a role in environmental protection. Now the United States experts serious emission enterprises in pollution, such as the surrounding coal power plants, construction of algae farms, so you can achieve low or zero emissions target, in addition, the by-product of biological algae can be extracted from the raw material of health care such as spirulina, sea fish oil OMEGA -3 and other minerals, and can burn electricity, too, not only the development of green recycling economy, and increase the new growth point.

Bio algal fuel market has great room for development. From now to 2017, the world\’s bio fuel market forecast annual growth rate of 12%, in 2018 the bio fuel market sales of up to $105 billion 400 million. In 2025, the amount of bio fuel up to 6 billion gallons (23 million 400 thousand tons). 2010 bio algae fuel market has reached $217 million in 2015, biological algal fuel market will reach 1 billion 600 million yuan, while the advanced technology market will reach about $530 million in 1/3 market, in 2013 the United States biological algae fuel oil production can obtain the government $1 per gallon tax subsidies. India and China are hoping to increase investment in new bio energy, reduce oil, coal, while reducing investment in environmental protection, reduce CO2 emissions.

You can use the CO2 biological algae fuel emissions of coal thermal power to aquaculture algae on carbon emissions and carbon credits can be tax deductible, and after the extraction of algae bio fuel, bio health products raw materials extraction, development of packaging products, can also be burning power generation, water circulation system can also use the entire real estate industry, ecological development, development of the industrial chain, including machinery and equipment research and development, is conducive to resolving the sale of the products, bio fuel supply. I do believe the algae industry evolving is good for biomass.
