What is the turning point in the gospel?

Read the Gospel of Mark as if reading a story. Pay attention to the characters, the plot, and the ways the author makes his points. After you’ve read it, please respond to the following question

1. Provide a broad summary of the gospel’s main plot… in other words, what is the basic story it is telling? Do not write more than four sentences for this… I just want you to see if you can figure out what the key story is here.

2. Almost every story has heroes and villains… who seem to be the good guys and who seem to be the bad guys in this story?

3. Consider the narrator of the gospel. Tell me 2 interesting things about the narrator. For example, you might say that the narrator loves to repeat a particular phrase, or that the narrator seems to like certain characters and not others.

4. What is the turning point in the gospel? In other words, when does the story seem to shift decisively? As long as you make a decent case for your choice, I won’t take off points… so don’t feel like you need to scour the internet for the “right” answer here.

What are the terminal cash flows from the sale of the asset at the end of 5 years?

Your probationary period at the Cosmo K Manufacturing Group continues. Your supervisor, Gerry, assigns you a project each week to test your competence in finance.

The company is considering the addition of a new office machine that will perform many of the tasks now performed manually. For this week’s task, Gerry has given you the responsibility of evaluating the cash flows associated with the new machine. He has requested the report to be delivered within the week.

Evaluation of a New Office Machine

The Cosmo K Manufacturing Group currently has sales of $1,400,000 per year. It is considering the addition of a new office machine, which will not result in any new sales but will save the company $105,500 before taxes per year over its 5-year useful life. The machine will cost $300,000 plus another $12,000 for installation. The new asset will be depreciated using a a modified accelerated cost recovery system (MACRS) 5-year class life. It will be sold for $25,000 at the end of 5 years. Additional inventory of $11,000 will be required for parts and maintenance of the new machine. The company evaluates all projects at this risk level using an 11.99% required rate of return. The tax rate is expected to be 35% for the next decade.

Tasks:

Answer the following questions:

  • What is the total investment in the new machine at time = 0 (T = 0)?
  • What are the net cash flows in each of the 5 years of operation?
  • What are the terminal cash flows from the sale of the asset at the end of 5 years?
  • What is the NPV of the investment?
  • What is the IRR of the investment?
  • What is the payback period for the investment?
  • What is the profitability index for the investment?
  • According to the decision rules for the NPV and those for the IRR, is the project acceptable?
  • Is there a conflict between the two decision methods? If so, what would you use to make a recommendation?
  • What are the pros and cons of the NPV and the IRR? Explain your answers.

What characteristics of “High Performance Work Systems” (described in CH 14) do you see in your chosen company?

hoose one of our “World Class” organizations (Netflix; Google; Amazon; Apple; Starbucks; Lincoln Electric).

1) What characteristics of “High Performance Work Systems” (described in CH 14) do you see in your chosen company?

2) If the organization did not say “Bring your A game” or did not use high performance work systems, could they achieve the same results?

3) Could they achieve the same high performance if they had 50% “A game” employees, and 50% “B+ game” employees, but hired 20% more employees to try to achieve the same high performance?

Briefly list the sources of quality control in auditing firms, both internal and external, and express an opinion on whether you think they are adequate to protect investors in today’ capital markets.

Answer the following questions based on this scenario.

You happen to be in New York City and have run across a person (person A) who would like to purchase an expensive widget from you.  However, your friend (person B), who lives in Baltimore, also has expressed a strong interest in purchasing the widget.  Person A has the cash on them to pay for the widget but you would prefer to sell the widget to your friend, B.  You call B on her cell phone and she says she has the cash to pay for the widget as well.  While you trust B, you would like to avoid the risk of driving all the way back to Baltimore and finding out that she really didn’t have the cash on hand.  So, you call another friend of yours, person C, and tell them you will buy them lunch if they will contact B; verify that she has the necessary cash to buy the widget; and call you right back.  C is a very old friend of yours and you trust them implicitly.  However, if C were to tell you that B has the cash and you find out later that she doesn’t, you would reconsider your friendship with C.

  1. a) Using the concept of information risk and its components, discuss why you decide to hire C?

d) There are three roles involved in any financial statement audit – investor or potential investor, firm, and auditor. Which role does each person in the scenario most closely represent and how do the relationships between these roles differ from how these roles are related in a typical financial statement audit?  Explain your answer.

2)             Briefly list the sources of quality control in auditing firms, both internal and external, and express an opinion on whether you think they are adequate to protect investors in today’ capital markets.  When describing the sources of quality control, provide a brief explanation of how they work, i.e., how they improve quality.  This is a broad question.  Internal quality control refers to what audit firms do internal to control the quality of their audits.  External quality control refers all the mechanisms that exist in the audit environment to include the client’s mechanisms, government regulation of auditing, professional standards, and legal liability.

3)             Read the following mini-case.  Identify all of the violations of the ten generally accepted auditing standards described in the text (Table 2.3).  Be clear on what action violated which standard and why.  Note that there may be more than one violation of each of the ten standards and you are to cover all the violations you can find.

John Smith owns a small, privately held firm.  He hired you to audit its financial statements.  He told you that the audit was to be completed in time to submit audited financial statements to a bank as part of a loan application.  You immediately accepted the engagement and agreed to provide an auditor’s report within three weeks.  John agreed to pay you a fixed fee plus a bonus if the loan was granted.  You hired two accounting students to conduct the audit and spent several hours telling them exactly what to do.  You told the students not to spend time reviewing John’s internal controls but instead to concentrate on proving the mathematical accuracy of the ledger accounts and on summarizing the data in the accounting records that support John’s financial statements.  The students followed your instructions and, after two weeks, gave you the financial statements, which did not include footnotes.  You studied the statements and prepared an unqualified auditor’s report.  The report, however, did not refer to generally accepted accounting principles or to the fact that John had changed to the accounting standard for capitalized interest.

You are a juvenile probation officer assigned to Richardson’s case. Using the template provided, prepare a probation agreement for the adjudicating judge to review.

Jimmy Richardson is a 15-year-old Centervale high school freshman with no past criminal history. He currently works part-time at a local retail establishment. The local police believe Richardson is involved with a local gang. They also suspect him of having used drugs in school.

Richardson and a friend are caught stealing $150 from a local gas station. The arresting officer smells alcohol on both Richardson and his friend. Richardson expresses regret for his actions and comments to the police and the court staff that he has been depressed lately because of his parents’ impending divorce.

The judge presiding over Richardson’s case decides to place Richardson on probation instead of sentencing him to confinement. However, before this sentence can be finalized, a document called a probation agreement needs to be prepared and authorized by the court. Essentially, a probation agreement is a contract of sorts between the probationer, the probationer’s parents (in the case of juvenile probation), and the judge, and it outlines what is expected of the juvenile while on probation.

Elements of the probation agreement generally include basic information about the defendant (his or her name, the court out of which the defendant is serving his or her probation, and the offense). Other common elements are the general conditions of probation, which are the terms, rules, and guidelines required of all probationers (these are typically the same for all probation agreements within a particular jurisdiction), and special conditions of probation, which are terms specific to each individual probationer. Special conditions of probation are based on the circumstances pertaining to the defendant’s arrest and conviction.

Tasks:

You are a juvenile probation officer assigned to Richardson’s case. Using the template provided, prepare a probation agreement for the adjudicating judge to review.

Click here to download the template.

In your agreement, list the general conditions (conditions that apply to all probationers) as well as any special conditions (conditions that apply only to Richardson in this particular case) that are appropriate.

Use the juvenile probation agreement forms found at the following links as guides to select proper general and special conditions:

Identify types of data–quantitative, quantitative, or both–and how the survey is distributed.

Use the data from Ballard Integrated Managed Services, Inc., Part 1.

Prepare a 3 page executive summary for the senior management team or stakeholders of your RES/351 research project to present your findings. The cover page and reference page are not included in the three page guideline.

Address the following:

Problem Statement

Present the chosen situation as an overview using a problem statement with a Wall Street Journal citation in problem statement paragraph to show validity of issue. in this case, the issue is employee retention and motivation. This is a critical piece and failure to have a problem statement that incorporates WSJ article results in a grade of D on the assignment. This is one paragraph in length

Survey Construction Section

Describe the instrument used for data collection.
Identify types of data–quantitative, quantitative, or both–and how the survey is distributed.
Identify the level of measurement for each of the variables involved in the study.
Code the data if you have not done so. Describe how the data is coded and evaluate the procedure used.
Clean the data by eliminating the data input errors made.
All of these items should be in one paragraph in length

Statistical Analysis Section (approximately two pages in length)

Introduce Descriptive Statistics and briefly provide a definition of mean, coefficient of variation and confidence and interval, use your own words, copy/paste definitions are not acceptable. Explain the actual descriptive statistics you calculated and what it may be telling you and the situation with the company. You can do this by a referring at least two of the questions you analyzed and explain the mean, coefficient of variation and confidence interval you calculated and what do they actually mean.
Using the Graph Data Entry File, make one graph that compares “average or mean” for each question. Create one graph that compares the coefficient of variation for each question and be sure to have it in the main body of the paper along with a title for the graph, label X and Y axis. Graphs are critical so failure to create a graph and use it in the body of the paper results in a grade of D. Directly below the graph you are to have one paragraph explaining what the graph is telling you so the reader can see it as well. The graphs must be in the main body of the analysis and not placed at the end of the analysis so that its the last paragraph. You also must talk about the graph so the reader can “see the main point you need them to see”.

Recommendation Section
Make a recommendation based upon data analysis. This should reflect what your data analysis indicates.

Survey Analysis Sheet: Using the data set and Megastat or Minitab, you are to calculate a mean, median, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and 95% confidence interval for each question. Then enter the information for each question into the survey analysis sheet. Software must be used for calculations for hand calculations are not acceptable for learning to use software is one of the learning objectives in this class.

Submit this completed survey analysis sheet along with your three page executive summary. Do Not Exceed 3 pages. Also submit your excel file where you calculated the descriptive statistics in Excel. The coefficient of variation you must calculate by hand and can simply listed in the excel sheet. The mean, median, standard deviation and confidence interval are to be calculated in the excel sheet and I will check to see you used Excel formulas for calculations and not simply wrote in the mean, standard deviation and confidence interval. The descriptive statistics option in megastat will do the calculations for you. Failure to use Excel for mean, standard deviation and confidence interval calculation will result in a D on the assignment.

Agree or disagree with the following statement and explain your answer. “In 1950, RGDP per person in the U.S. was about $10,000. By 2000, RGDP per person in the U.S. was about $30,000. This implies that the living standard of the typical U.S. resident tripled in 50 years!

It is possible for an economy to operate for a time with an unemployment rate less that the “natural” unemployment rate. (Also known as NAIRU, the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment).

12) Agree or disagree with the following statement and explain your answer. “In 1950, RGDP per person in the U.S. was about $10,000. By 2000, RGDP per person in the U.S. was about $30,000. This implies that the living standard of the typical U.S. resident tripled in 50 years!

16) a) Suppose nominal GDP rose from 16,245 billion in 2012 to 16,800 billion in 2103. If the GDP deflator rose from 105 to 106.59 during this time, what was the percent growth in real GDP (not nominal GDP, RGDP =?, read my lecture notes).

b) Given the data in part (a), what was the rate of inflation for goods and services produced in the U.S. economy for the same time?

Explain the initial pairing of the banging bar and the rat in terms of learning through classical conditioning. What are unconditioned stimulus (US), conditioned stimulus (CS), and conditioned response (CR)?

Read the article and answer the following questions in your essay:

  • Explain the initial pairing of the banging bar and the rat in terms of learning through classical conditioning. What are unconditioned stimulus (US), conditioned stimulus (CS), and conditioned response (CR)?
  • How were Watson and Rayner able to condition Albert to react to different stimuli such as masks, other animals, and a fur coat? Explain the concept of generalization.
  • Why didn’t the conditioning last over time? Explain the concept of extinction.
  • Considering the current standards, can the same experiment be conducted (or replicated) by researchers today? Explain some of the ethical issues related to the experiment.

Make sure you cite the article you read as well as the textbook, if used.
