Given increased globalization and demographic shifts, what changes in the workplace are likely to occur? Explain in terms of workforce demographics, new challenges, and benefits.

Consider forecasted changes in the U.S. and on a global level, and write an 8–10-page executive report addressing the following:

  • Given increased globalization and demographic shifts, what changes in the workplace are likely to occur? Explain in terms of workforce demographics, new challenges, and benefits.
  • How will these changes impact the way organizations function?
  • How will HR practices change staffing, rewarding, employee relations, communication, performance management, training and development, and technology? Within that discussion, point out current best practices that may require modification as well as the most appropriate modifications.
  • What are the legal and ethical implications of change?
  • How should current employees and leaders begin to prepare for this change? Prepare a change management plan that includes strategies to communicate relevant information to employees.

Write an 8–10-page executive report in Word format. Support your predictions and suggestions with scholarly resources and empirical evidence. The executive report should include a cover letter, a title page, a reference page, and sections addressing the topics listed. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Refer to the Buena School District bus data provided on the author’s website. Is there a difference in the mean maintenance cost for the diesel versus the gasoline buses? Use the .05 significance level.

  1. A random sample of 50 students at the University of Florida revealed the mean number of hours slept last night was 6 hours and 48 minutes (6.8 hours). The standard deviation of the sample was .9 hours. A previous study concluded that Americans get a mean of 7 hours of sleep per night. Is it reasonable to conclude that the students at the University of Florida sleep less than the typical American? Compute the p-value.
  2. According to a CBS News survey, 40% of Americans do not eat breakfast. A sample of 30 high school students found 16 had skipped breakfast that day. Use the .01 significance level to check whether high school students are more likely to skip breakfast.
  3. Refer to the Buena School District bus data provided on the author’s website. Is there a difference in the mean maintenance cost for the diesel versus the gasoline buses? Use the .05 significance level.

Explain what is Hadoop.

Explain what is Hadoop, how its fit into the Data Warehouse creation/utilization concept, what advantages its bring over the earlier and more traditional DW back-end technologies, and any other material on these topic that you find interesting. write two paragraphs about that.

Explain important concept from the course in your own words both in class and in your writing.

Reflections
Studies in education have shown that what matters most in learning something may be your ability to recognize and reflect on your own learning. You haven’t truly learned it till you recognize and own your learning. This fact is a major reason why I want to get you to explain important concept from the course in your own words both in class and in your writing. It is also why I will ask you to complete a short major refection every four weeks or so. These reflections are an opportunity for you to tell me what you think you have learned about what writing is, how it works, and what it can do for you. It is also a chance for you to tell me what concepts you still don’t understand and/or still aren’t sure you can agree with. You should also feel free in these reflections to let me know what is or isn’t working to help you learn and what you would like to see happen in class to better help you learn. These reflections can be difficult sometimes because I don’t have fixed ideas of what they should look like or include other than the general guidelines I have just laid out. You need to talk about what you feel you have learned in the course regarding what writing is, how it works, and what it can do. In later reflections, you could also discuss how that has changed from one reflection to the next.

Like informal writing, these reflections will not be assessed for formal elements and they will be graded credit/no credit, but unlike informal writing they are major commitments on the contract. They are very important.

Your Theory of Writing
The real goal of reflection is for you to go beyond just consuming the information in this course and to take ownership of your own understanding of writing. This “theory of writing” will provide you with the knowledge that you will take with you into new writing ecologies and rhetorical situations. It will allow you to more effectively analyze writing situations to determine what prior knowledge will be effective, how you will need to adapt to new circumstances, and what you will need to discover so that you can write successfully in those new situations. Because this is so important for developing your writing, you should take it very seriously and work to convince me that you have taken it seriously.

Describe your weakest communication (listening) skill on your present job. Explain how you will improve your listening ability.

Communication is the process of conveying information and meaning. Effectively, this occurs when all parties understand the message or information and its meaning. Your ability to speak, listen, read, and write will have a direct impact on the success of your career. To improve your performance and get ahead in an organization, you have to be open to feedback.

  • Analyze your own skills on the job (pharmacy technician) and explain if you are readily open to feedback and criticism at work. Give a recent example of how you took criticism. This example can be a positive or negative experience.
  • Based on your example, explain how you can improve your ability to accept criticism. Select two tips from the readings you can use to improve your written communication.
  • Describe your weakest communication (listening) skill on your present job. Explain how you will improve your listening ability.

Write your initial response in a minimum of 200–300 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Would it make a difference if the design was primarily for economically-developed.

Designing for Third World Countries – A New Dialysis Machine

You are an engineer working for a company designing dialysis equipment for worldwide

use.

You are interested in designing both for economically-developed countries and third-

world countries. In economically-developed countries there are working dialysis systems,

but your design would be an improvement. In the third-world, access to any dialysis

equipment is currently limited.

Choice #1: You have two design options:

•A design using disposable filters that would be replaced with each patient

•A design involving a 100 times more expensive reusable filter that could be cleaned,

autoclaved and reused with each patient

Issues:

•Purchase of disposables in the third world is difficult and not typically funded by

charitable organizations and government entities that might be willing to purchase or

donate the equipment

•The reusable filter would require much more training, autoclaves, and would be more

expensive initially (although cheaper in the long-term (after 100 patients)

•The second design, in the hands of untrained personnel, could be more dangerous

•The first design would be more profitable for your company in economically developed

countries as hospitals would continue to buy disposable filters

•Manufacturing and FDA approval costs are such that your company can only move

forward on one design

Choice #2: Secondary infection is a risk in dialysis. Such an infection in a patient with

kidney disease could result in long-term injury and increased risk of death. You have a

choice between three design options:

•The first design will have a secondary infection rate of 1 in 1,000

•The second design will have a secondary infection rate of 1 in 1,000,000 and cost 10 times the first design

•The third design will have a secondary infection rate of 1 in 5,000,000 and cost 100 times the first design

Which design will you choose?

Would it make a difference if the design was primarily for economically-developed

countries or for third-world countries?

Initial responses are due Thursday, October 1.  Please respond to at least two of your classmates posts by Sunday, Oct 4.

Learning Activity #2

Truth Telling – Case Study – Italian Tax Mores by Arthur Kelly

The normal way of filing taxes is to put in a very low number, which starts a protracted series of negotiations, eventually ending up with a higher number being paid. This new bank did not follow this and the Italian authorities assumed it was stated in the normal understated fashion.

Discuss the ethical implications. Do you apply your values or that of the “Italian Way”?
