Public health surveillance and prevention efforts in the U.S. reflect the involvement of numerous health care providers and organizations. Government agencies such as the CDC often function as a hub for the collection, coordination, and communication of public health-related data. Common applications of public health IT to promote and improve the health of populations include (but are not limited to) biosurveillance, disease registries, and immunization tracking. The timely and appropriate implementation of these applications can have a significant impact on the ability of providers to deliver health care to the their patients, which, in turn, can have a profound effect on a community’s overall state of health and wellness. Consider the dire impact a SARS outbreak might have, for example, if patient diagnoses were not reported and shared regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Prepare for this Application as follows:

Conduct a literature review of a specific application of health information technology in public health and locate an example in which the application was used to address a public health-related concern. (You might wish to begin by researching a particular surveillance program, disease outbreak, disease registry, prevention program, or other public health-related event, and then identify the technology involved in this activity.)
Find out how this application has impacted the public’s health. Learn also about any ways in which health care providers and organizations were involved in the use of this information technology.

Then write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

Describe the specific application you selected and the ways in which it addresses a public health-related concern. Summarize the potential benefits to the public, as well as any possible drawbacks, arising from the use of this application.
Explain the role of hospitals and other health care organizations in contributing to or making use of this public health-related IT application.

Why are “standards” so prevalent in education today? Why are “accountability” and “standards” the buzz words in many professions and society today? Isn’t it good to have standards in your life? So why is education any different?

Some of you may have understood that the prevalent use of standards was just the way that schools are. If so, what was your reaction to Eisner’s view of the standards system in “The Centrality of Curriculum and the Function of Standards”?

Criminal courts ordinarily handle adults accused of felony crimes. At times, criminal courts will manage cases involving juveniles but only when they have been remanded out of juvenile court. Criminal courts often rely on psychological evaluations to determine a number of different competencies of the accused. The potential applications of these evaluations within the criminal courts range from the typical competency to stand trial evaluation, to the less common competency for execution evaluation. Although, criminal court evaluations usually assess the defendant’s competency on important legal matters, they also play a role in determining mental state at the time of the offense, as well as appropriate sentencing procedures at the conclusion of the trial. In this assignment, you consider when and why you would use particular forensic psychological evaluations in criminal courts. You also explain the similarities and differences between them.

Police officers work in communities, with not only individuals and specific groups of people, but also with larger organizations and institutions—macro communities. Police professionals must become familiar with these communities, know the issues and concerns to be addressed, and have skills to interact in a productive and efficient manner. Macro communities have their own rules, situational demands, and acceptable standards of responding. These communities also represent societal and cultural norms and messages. Macro communities can be public and private, and they have the power to influence or change those who participate or interact with them. Since macro communities consist of numerous micro communities, the police professional must understand their relevance and be able to maneuver through their norms and values to maintain safety and security. In this case, the job of the forensic psychology professional is to assist the police professional in understanding the norms and constraints of the macro communities while working within different systems that have their own goals and standards (i.e., micro communities). Regardless of the directive, forensic psychology professionals are tasked with providing insight to police professionals regarding their interactions with larger communities (macro communities), and helping them work toward a beneficial outcome for all involved parties.

Whether change is forced up an organization or an entity proactively alters itself, someone needs to be in control of an organization’s activities and responses. Rosabeth Moss Kanter is a well known Harvard University business professor. She suggested that possession of a specific set of skills helps to differentiate effective leaders from ineffective leaders.

John Kotter is the author of what is probably the most influential model or process of leader driven corporate change. Few business schools fail to make use of his eight step model in their curriculum. Michael Watkins fame is more recent. He researched and has written a compelling article on what leaders need to do during the first 90 days of their tenure as CEO’s. In times of dramatic economic upheaval, CEO turnover typically escalates. In those instances, Watkins ideas serve as a useful guide for key decision.

Many individuals equate career success with a position as an officer or executive of a large publicly traded corporation. While remuneration is often considerable, a downside of such success is that one’s life enters into the public domain. Observers, analysts and researchers of these corporations benefit from by being offered access to back ground information on these individuals. Biographies may be accessed online from U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings by their employers. What is beneficial about such access is that the past behavior of executives often points to the future. We are creatures of habit.

Knowing the skills and previous successes of an individual often predicts how he or she might deal with a crisis or challenge and in turn enhance outsiders understanding of these large for profit entities. Knowing backgrounds also enables observers to understand who is who on corporate teams. Who did the CEO hire? Who preceded the CEO? Answers to questions such as these suggest who is powerful and who is an insider to decision making? Knowing education backgrounds and previous employers can also suggest who will be turned to for advice in challenging moments. As noted above, SEC documents such as a 10K filing will highlight the year when an executive started with a company. Looking back at previous years documents, one can determine when executives were hired, fired or retired. When this type of information is compared with share price data available using Yahoo!Finance, one can often tie executive changes to performance declines. Applying this type of knowledge is the purpose of this assignment.
