When you think you understand some of the ethical dilemmas in this area and have some ideas about how to resolve them, please prepare a no less than 4 page paper on the questions:

Is it ethical for employers to use information technologies to extend work into employees’ home lives? What are the most ethically responsible employee responses to these pressures?

Part II Case Assignment

Review the above resources dealing with the Egyptian situation and the rhetorical climate within which it evolved. Feel absolutely free to follow these up with any other sources that you find informative in helping you to make your case in a no less than 4-page paper in response to the following question:

Is it ethical for IT vendors such as Google to promote the use of their information technology products in pursuit of political revolutions in various countries?

Assignment Expectations

Your paper should be between 8-10 pages total. Combine Parts I and II into a single report labeling each part accordingly.

Coordinating Instructions:

Take a definite stand on the issues, and develop your supporting argument carefully. Using material from the background information and any other sources you can find to support specific points in your argument is highly recommended; try to avoid making assertions for which you can find no support other than your own opinion.

Make sure to spell out the utilitarian and deontological considerations involved, and distinguish between them.

Be sure to provide proper citations for any material you reference from other sources!

Precision: You see what the module is all about and structure your paper accordingly. You draw on a range of sources and establish your understanding of the historical context of the question. You carry out the exercise as assigned or carefully explain the limitations that prevented your completing some parts. (Running out of time isn’t generally considered an adequate limitation).

Support for assertions: You use examples, citations (especially from the required readings), and elaboration to support assertions. You provide evidence that you have read the required background materials.

Clarity: Your answers are clear and show your good understanding of the topic. You see what the module is all about and structure your paper accordingly.

Critical thinking: The paper incorporates your reactions, examples, and applications of the material to business and illustrates your reflective judgment and good understanding of the concepts. It is important to read the “Required Reading” in the Background material plus other sources you find relevant.

Breadth and depth: You provide informed commentary and analysis—simply repeating what your sources say does not constitute an adequate paper. The scope covered in your paper is directly related to the questions of the assignment and the learning outcomes of the module.

Overall quality: You apply the professional language and terminology of systems design and analysis correctly and in context; you are familiar with this language and use it appropriately. Your paper is well written and the references, where needed, are properly cited and listed (refer to the Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper) if you are uncertain about formats or other issues.

The City of St. Albans has a unionized police force that is coming up for a contract renewal. The police have one issue: the cost of living increases. During the past 10 years, police officers have received minimal cost of living increases, and this time they want to match what other police forces are making. They claim that their salaries are below the national level. The incoming new police hire earns a salary of $48,200. Using the websites provided in the research section, prepare data and an argument on behalf of the police officers to support their position. (from textbook.)

You are a counselor for a major metropolitan police force. Your job is to interview persons who are referred to you by superiors, who voluntarily come to you for counseling, or who, because of a specific incident, are mandated by departmental regulations to seek your counsel. On the last four callouts over the past 6 weeks, three of them have resulted in the offender being shot to death by your unit’s sniper. You are scheduled to speak with him this week about his feelings concerning the shootings. You received a call from his wife the night before last. It seems that the sniper has taken to sleeping in the living room and not in his bedroom. His wife has been unable to convince him to sleep in bed with her for the past month. He claims that he has headaches and goes to sleep on the couch. After the last mission in which he had to shoot a suspect, the team went to a local bar that they patronize. The sniper reportedly got drunk and, while hugging another member of the team, he started crying about the three men that he had to shoot over the past six weeks. The next day, he acted like the crying incident did not happen. He either forgot it in the alcohol haze, or pretended not to remember it.

In a callout last night, the sniper and his partner took up a position at the rear of a house where home invaders were barricaded. At one point, an offender exited the back door with a gun in his hand. The sniper stood up in the open and walked right up to the offender, who was dazed at the sniper’s behavior. The sniper struck the weapon from the offender’s hand with the butt of his rifle, and then knocked him to the ground, where he placed him in handcuffs. Although it initially seemed to be a brave act, it violated all protocol to break cover, and it risked the sniper, his partner, and the offender’s life.

You have a decision to make at this point. In a 3–5 page paper, respond to the following:

Describe the mental state of the sniper since the three shootings have occurred in which he killed the offenders.
Articulate two of the possible personality disorders or afflictions that the sniper has that are interfering with his work.
Explain whether, if the sniper would get the treatment needed, he might be able to return to his duties as a sniper, or possibly back to regular uniformed duties.
Relate how treatment of the sniper would benefit him as an individual in terms of his interpersonal relationships and his own safety.

You are a staff counselor working at a community mental health clinic. Your caseload includes working clients from diverse backgrounds who have serious and chronic mental disorders. One of your clients, a 20-year-old man from Central Africa, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. One day his parents are present when you make a home visit. They want to invite the extended family to a healing ceremony for their son and have asked a local shaman to perform a ritual to banish any bad spirits that are interfering with their son’s cure. Because you have been successful in establishing a relationship with their son, they respect you and want you to take part in the ceremony.
