Identify at least two possible ethical issues that could arise during your interview (hint: go back to your Module 1 lecture for ideas about ethical issues in interviewing).

During the first week of class you conducted your first practice interview, and in week three you developed an Interview Guide. For this activity, you will be using your Interview Guide, the analysis of potential interview biases from LASA 1, and the feedback you have received from your instructor to conduct an interview with a volunteer.

Prior to the Interview

  1. Locate an adult volunteer.
  2. Read the analysis requirements below and ENSURE you meet them within your interview. Make sure your interview includes:
    1. A minimum of 5 open and 5 closed ended questions (10 total).
    2. A minimum of 5 examples of paraphrasing, summaries, or reflections techniques (must have at least one of each paraphrase, summary, and reflection/5 total).

  1. Gather Recording Equipment (video is preferred).  You will need to record your interview.
  2. Also make sure you have a watch or a timer to keep track of the length of your interview. Make sure your interview is not less than 5 minutes long.

The Interview

  1. Needs to be at least 5 minutes long, but it should not be more than 10 minutes.
  2. Be prepared! Although it may not sound like it, 5 minutes is a long time in interviewing time. If you are having problems filling 5 minutes, go back to the interview skills you have learned about (e.g., probing, reflections, and summaries).

After the Interview

  1. Play back the recording of the interview.
  2. Transcribe or write out the interview completely. Be sure to write out everythingsaid during the interview
  3. After you have written the transcript of the interview, provide a detailed analysis of the interview. On your transcript:
    1. Identify Questions Used: On your transcript identify at least 5 closed and 5 open ended questions that you used during the interview. Identify these on your transcript using all caps (10 questions total).

      For example:

Interviewer:  How long have you been having headaches?  CLOSED QUESTION

    1. Evaluate the Questions: After you have identified examples of 5 open and 5 open questions in your transcript, write an evaluation of the effectiveness of your use of questions (Approximately one paragraph for this analysis). Explain whether or not your questions were effective. How did your client respond to your questions? How would you improve the effectiveness of your questions?
    2. Identify Techniques Used: Next, identify at least 5 examples of paraphrasing, summarizing, or reflections you used (must have at least one of each: paraphrase, summary, and reflection). Again, use all caps on your transcript to identify each technique.

      For example:

Interviewer: So it’s been several weeks since you’ve been able to sleep without problems? PARAPHRASE

    1. Evaluate the Techniques: Evaluate the effectiveness of your interview technique (Approximately one paragraph for this entire section). How did your client respond to the techniques in the interview? How do you know if you were effective with these? Provide justification for your response. How could you improve your use of these?

  1. Application: Analysis and Summary
    1. Explain how the information you gathered during the interview can aid in planning treatment for your client. How can treatment of this client be more informed or more targeted based on the information you gathered (Approximately 2-3 paragraphs).
    2. Identify at least two possible ethical issues that could arise during your interview (hint: go back to your Module 1 lecture for ideas about ethical issues in interviewing).  Explain how an ethical interviewer should deal with each of these issues. (Approximately 2-3 paragraphs).

What are the most important ideas that the writers explore that would contribute to the happiness and/or equality of women?

Papers #2 (topics—length 3-4 double-spaced pages (900-1200 words), Works Cited, MLA format).

Required Books:

1. Wollstonecraft. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. e-text link: http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/3420/pg3420-images.html

2. Elizabeth Cady Stanton. “The Declaration of Sentiments” e-text link: http://legacy.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/senecafalls.asp).

3. Pollan, Michael. The Botany of Desire. Random House, 2002. ISBN: 978-0-375-76039-6.

4. Marx. The Communist Manifesto ISBN: 978-0717802418

5. Jacobs, Jane. The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Vintage,1992. ISBN: 067974195X.

For Paper #2, you have two broad options. The first has a focus of women and the pursuit of happiness and/or equality. The question is what are the most important ideas that the writers explore that would contribute to the happiness and/or equality of women? Select just one or two specific ideas from each author. You can also approach this option by discussing the main obstacle(s) to the happiness and/or equality of women. You may use any two of our readings by Wollstonecraft, Stanton, Pollan, Marx, and Jacobs. Make sure you have a coherent and specific thesis before you start! Quotations are required!

The second option for Paper #2 is to write about two of our authors who have the best basis for understanding what makes people happy in the truest sense, as you understand it. Include in your intro and thesis your own definition of “happiness,” your view of the texts’ ways of defining or understanding “happiness,” and explore how the authors’ ideas could create a better or more enlightened society. For this paper, you have to explore some specific passages in our readings. You may use any two of our readings by Wollstonecraft, Stanton, Pollan, Marx, and Jacobs. As above, make sure your thesis makes sense, and quotations are required!

For example, you could say that Jacobs has the best insight into what actually makes people happy. (She describes, in passing, many of the qualities and characteristics of environments that people need to be happy, including the kind of liberty and excitement and interest people crave in cities) etc. You could also say that Elizabeth Cady Stanton has a different but essential understanding of happiness as she explores the idea of a marriage between equals. So Jacobs thinks more from an environmental social perspective and Stanton works more from an individual socialpolitical perspective, etc. As an alternative organizing principle, you may also use divergent theories about what we are as human beings and what enables us to be happy or content or wise etc. You may compare the divergent ways of knowing, and say which one you think is nearest to the truth. But perhaps this sort of understanding fits well with Jacobs empirical observations of cities as they exist. You could compare these various visions with Marx or Pollan. They all have, directly or indirectly, a theory or view of what human beings really are.

    Ethics Scenario

    Public Company Accounting Oversight Board

One of the main features of the Sarbanes–Oxley Act (SOX) is the creation of an independent board that oversees the audits of public companies. Congress’s perception was that auditing firms were not sufficiently independent of the public companies they audited due in part to the audit firms’ receiving sizable nonaudit consulting fees from their audit clients. Thus, SOX created a Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). Public accounting firms that audit financial statements of public companies are required to register with PCAOB and submit to its rules. The board is charged with adopting rules establishing auditing, quality control, ethics, and independence standards. It has the power to regulate the nonaudit services that audit firms may perform for their clients. The PCAOB has the power to inspect periodically public accounting firms and to issue reports of the results of the reviews. The purpose of inspections is to assess the degree of compliance with the requirements of SOX, professional auditing standards, and the rules of the PCAOB and the SEC in the performance of audits and the issuance of audit reports of public companies. In addition, the PCAOB may investigate and discipline audit firms and their partners and employees.

The PCAOB is not a federal agency, but a nonprofit corporation with broad regulatory power like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), a self-regulatory organization that regulates securities brokers and dealers. It has five members, only two of which may be CPAs. No board member may receive any share of profits or compensation from a public accounting firm.

Describe a situation where you or someone you know was resistant to change.

Understanding and Coping with Change

Change is everywhere, yet very few people seem to embrace the concept. We are, for the most part, creatures of habit and follow daily routines. When change occurs, our activities and thought patterns are disrupted.

Write a four- to five-page APA formatted paper (excluding the title and reference pages), using a minimum of three scholarly sources in addition to the textbook, analyzing the internal and external factors contributing to an individual’s resistance to change.

Describe a situation where you or someone you know was resistant to change as identified in one of following areas:

  1. Self-interest
  2. Lack of understanding
  3. Lack of trust in management
  4. Differing assessments of the need for change
  5. Low tolerance for change

Explain whether the resistance to change was caused by an internal or external factor. Using Kotter’s theory for change, provide a plan for overcoming that resistance. What will be done and how will you know that the plan has worked
