Read Chapter 12 in the textbook. This chapter focuses on communication in organizations, understanding the process, and overcoming barriers. Communication in multinational companies is particularly challenging due to language and country-specific cultural norms.

Read Chapter 13 in the textbook. This chapter focuses on managing groups and teams, how to understand group dynamics, recognize barriers, and build cohesive teams. Team building in multinational companies may be similar in many ways to the US workplace but may differ in significantly.

Your paper should discuss how your organization manages employees in other countries. If you are unemployed, choose a previous place of employment for the purpose of discussion in this paper. Some questions to discuss in your paper:

Does your organization have multinational teams? How are multinational teams managed and monitored your organization? Are barriers to communication similar to those encountered local teams? Have you encountered communication missteps due to words and concepts that have different meaning in other cultures?

These questions are given to help you formulate your understanding of the subject as it relates to your personal work situation. You are not required to answer all the questions in your paper.

References: A minimum of two references from the reading list are required for this assignment. You may use your textbook as a reference in addition to the two reading list references.

Ethos:

How can you get the audience to understand why you care so much about this topic?

What are some different ways that you can get the audience to care about this topic/argument?
How can you convince the audience that this topic matters/is important?
What emotions do you want your audience to be feeling during your presentation, and how might you evoke/cause those emotions with your presentation?

Logos:

What might help you convince your audience to trust you as a source of information on this topic?
What reasons or logic do you have to support your argument/belief?
What support or evidence might you be able to find (quickly on the internet) to back up/prove your argument/belief?

Argument Synthesis – Obedience to Authority

This essay – Argument Synthesis – will approach how to combine connecting sources together with constructing an argumentative position. For this essay, topics must be related to (or based upon) material from the Obedience to Authority unit on Blackboard. You will research and evaluate materials to argue for a particular position or answer to a research question. In addition, you will be required to use research to connect and support your argument, as well as forward the discussion on your topic.

The Assignment
Using the same research methods employed in Essay 2, you will write a 4 page essay, using 3-5 sources, to argue for a position or answer to a research question. While it may seem like your topic choices are limited, I assure you they are not – they must simply relate to the unit material at hand. You must also address and respond to at least one opposing argument in your essay. The basics of including opposing views/voices into your essay will be covered in class. Unlike Essay 2, this essay does not require use of a source from the specific unit (Obedience to Authority). However, you may still use the sources from the Obedience to Authority unit if you so choose. ALSO – keep in mind that this is argumentative and not explanatory. This means that while you are STILL required to connect sources together, your analysis of those connections should support or challenge your argument.

Topic Selection: Where to Begin?
As indicated earlier, it may seem like your topics are extremely limited, but topic selection not as limited as it may seem. You can very easily take some current events and fit them into the discussion from class and the unit – or, explore an entirely different discussion related to the themes and topic from the Obedience to Authority unit. Most of the issues we deal with in life have something to do with power, authority, or obedience/disobedience. These following questions my help guide you in topic selection:
• Is there a system of authority in place? Who is in charge, and why?
• Are there any sort of legal issues, cultural conflicts, or power struggles between individuals or groups?
• How does this issue relate to me? How am I influenced or impacted by power, authority, and resistance?
A quick scan of recent events in the news is also very telling in regards to potential topics. You’ll find if you simply keep your eyes and ears open, there are plenty of things to write about for this essay.

Formatting
All formatting stays the same: 12 point Times New Roman Font; header including your name, instructor, class, and date on the first page ONLY; 1” margins on all sides of the paper; double spaced throughout (including your Works Cited paper); and your last name and page number in the upper right corner of every page. There are also no footnotes for these essays, unless you wish to explain a complicated idea, concept, or term without taking up space in the body of your essay. Otherwise, you must stick to the MLA guidelines for citing sources in-text

Salinger is often said to be a chronicler of the “buried ambivalence of the 1950s.” A Zen koan, like the epigraph, is an insoluble conundrum, a riddle that can be approached from all sides and over the course of many years. Write an essay about how Salinger uses paradoxes through character and setting and plot that reflect modern life but refuse to be a part of it. The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.

For Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, reviewed the Procon.org Website in order to gather information, and engaged in prewriting to examine your thoughts.

In Part II of the assignment (due Week 4), you will write a paper to synthesize your ideas.

Part II – Writing

Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

1. State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1.

2. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position    and explain why you selected these specific reasons.

3. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website.

4. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position.

5. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases.

6. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

• Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
• Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
• Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
