Assignment 1: Database Consultant Services
Xpress Mart is a large convenience store chain, headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, serving approximately 7.1 million customers a year throughout the North East. The company headquarters houses over 800 employees.
Xpress Mart has recently purchased Dales Outlet stores, and is currently experiencing a seven percent (7%) annual growth. The market plan is to expand its operations by entering into the Midwest, and to eventually become a National chain. The database is growing at a rate of eight and one-half percent (8.5%) per year and will exceed the current hard drive space. The main server is overloaded, resulting in poor performance and long delays.
The company currently has a 4-terabyte Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), database that tracks over four (4) billion transactions each year and pulls the information daily from each store regionally.

Since Xpress Mart is experiencing performance issues, and soon will have issues with capacity, it has decided to upgrade the SQL server to 2012, hiring you as a database consultant.

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:

  1. Assess the physical storage requirements and summarize the initial steps you should take before beginning capacity planning and the upgrade.
  2. Outline the foreseeable issues that Xpress Mart may encounter while upgrading from SQL 2008 to SQL 2012.
  3. Identify whether the growth of the database or the growth of the business is going to influence your design. Justify your response.
  4. Using Visio or a similar drawing program, outline the proposed changes that will accommodate the capacity changes to the database. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length.
  5. Recommend a solution for how the company should maintain and monitor the database to ensure proper performance is maintained.

Identify the facts from the scenario which support your decision on whether or not a contract exists for the purchase of the automobile.

Jim and Laura Buyer visit the local car dealership because they are interested in buying a new car. The car they currently have is aging and is starting to have mechanical problems. Jim and Laura would share the new car, and use it to go back and forth to work and school. Before going to the dealership, Jim and Laura decide that they can only afford $400.00 a month in car payments.

Once at the car dealership, Jim and Laura meet Stan Salesman. Stan shows them several vehicles and Jim and Laura test-drive several of the cars. Jim and Laura particularly like the blue 4-door sedan. Therefore, they agree to give Stan Salesman a $100.00 deposit to hold the car for a day. Stan Salesman does not give them the receipt but guarantees that the $100.00 is refundable. No documents were signed.

The next day, Stan Salesman calls Jim and Laura to ask them when they would like to take delivery of the car. Jim and Laura, on the way home from the dealership, decided that they were not going to buy the car because they did not want to spend that money each month. Therefore, Jim and Laura tell Stan salesman that they have decided not to buy the car and request their $100.00 deposit back.

Stan insists that the $100.00 was a deposit on the car and was meant to be part of the contract to buy the car. Stan is very persistent and insistent that Jim and Laura have contracted to buy the car; therefore, the $100.00 will be applied to the purchase price of the car. Jim and Laura are shocked and angry as not only do they not want to spend the money, but now feel as though they are being duped by Stan Salesman.

Jim and Laura have an appointment to see a lawyer in a few days, but know you are a student taking a business law class and come to you for advice. They are very frazzled, and understandably upset that they may have just purchased a car. Since you have been taking business law, you have read and understand the elements of a contract and the defenses to a contract. Therefore, although you are not a lawyer, you provide some basic advice from what you’ve learned in your business law class.

In three to five (3-5) pages, advise Jim and Laura based on the above facts as presented, the material provided in the text, and material covered in the lecture. In your paper, be sure to address the following:

Define the elements of a legal contract using examples from the scenario where applicable.
Decide whether or not there was a contract for the purchase of the automobile.
Identify the facts from the scenario which support your decision on whether or not a contract exists for the purchase of the automobile.

Case Application 3-B: TEAM FUN!

Tony, the new director of human resources, and Edna, the compensation and benefits manager, are hanging employment legislation posters in RETREAT, the TEAM FUN! employee cafeteria. Edna offers, “I remember some woman who applied for a job to advertise men’s baseball gear and sued when she didn’t get the job.  The EEOC said she had no case. A couple of years ago, we moved Fred from fitness demos to stock management because he couldn’t do the treadmill or lift the big weights anymore. There was talk about an age discrimination case because he was 57, but that never went anywhere.”

Tony asks, “Do you realize that all of the warehouse workers are male and all the RETREAT workers are female?”

Edna replies, “What’s your point?” Tony waves his hand at the EEOC information they have displayed. Edna shrugs, “This is the best job I ever had. If you ask anyone else who works here, they will say the same thing.”

Interpersonal Relationships Project

There are six well defined stages in interpersonal relationships, including:

Contact:  the initial stage of the relationship that includes a perceptual stage where the individuals simply become aware of each other, and an interactional stage that includes the exchange of basic information and where each individual decides if a relationship is worth pursuing.

Involvement:  increased contact which allows the individuals to learn more about each other, a sense of being connected begins to develop and the individuals begin to spend more time together doing things that suggest an intensification of the relationship.

Intimacy:  Each individual feels a sense of commitment to the other and some type of defined relationship, usually divided into two stages—the interpersonal commitment which is a private commitment and the social bonding which is more public.  Both individuals identify individually as part of a unit or pair, and the public also identifies them as such.

Deterioration:  the weakening of the bonds of intimacy due to dissatisfaction that ultimately leads to withdrawal from contact, decreasing self-disclosure and increased deception.  This stage may or may not include arguing and quarreling.

Repair:  one or both individuals make attempts to analyze what is wrong and try to find ways to solve the problems by changing own behaviors or changing the expectations of the other’s behaviors.  The goal of this stage is a return to the intimacy stage.  This stage may be skipped.

Dissolution:  completely severing the bonds that held the relationship together in the intimacy stage.

Watch the 2006 movie “The Break-up.”  Watch for signs and examples of the six stages of a relationship.  Keep in mind that the initial stages may be represented in incidents from the past that are being remembered or retold by the characters.

Write a short, 1 1/2 to 2 page, double spaced essay addressing all six of the stages of interpersonal relationships.

Remember that although the above components are being demonstrated and studied with a romantic relationship in this particular move, the same processes occur in other types of relationships (friendships, work relationships, etc.) as well.
