Be sure to identify the title of the question when posting.

  1. Your Microwave Oven:A microwave oven emits microwaves that have just the right wavelength needed to cause energy level changes in water molecules. Use this fact to explain how a microwave oven cooks your food. Why doesn’t a microwave oven make a plastic dish get hot? Why do some clay dishes get hot in the microwave? Why do dishes that aren’t themselves heated by the microwave oven sometimes still get hot when you heat food on them?

Discuss possible resolutions to the problems you have analyzed or broaden your analysis/critique of the King’s essay by discussing your overall impression of horror films.

Assignment: For this assignment you will need to write a persuasive essay with a clear, direct thesis/stand on an issue that is the focus of debate or disagreement. The focus of debate for this essay is Stephen King’s attitude about the relationship between society and horror films as presented in his essay “Why We Crave Horror Films.” (The essay can be found in the text book.)

For this essay, instead of looking at a single text in isolation and summarizing that text as a stand alone document or making an evaluation or argument with no sources, we will be using a text as the basis of the argument. The skills used and practiced so far–careful reading, annotating, responding, summarizing, and writing arguments–will now be combined with further critical reading, quoting, and paraphrasing to support your own thesis.

You are to argue your thesis using quotes from the text “Why We Crave Horror Films” by Stephen King to help support your thesis. In the essay, King argues that horror films are necessary for society because they allow individuals a means to rid themselves of negative emotions. As a thesis for your essay, you may answer one of the following questions:Are horror films good for society? Are horror films bad for society? Are horror films both good and bad for society? Are horror films just another form of entertainment and not that important?

The Introductory paragraphs should have a hook that pulls the reader into the subject. Next, you need to provide a short summary of King’s essay. Be sure to state the author and title of the work before the summary. And be sure to state King’s thesis. The end of the introductory section should contain a clear, direct thesis of your overall position with regard to King’s thesis. What is your attitude toward horror films? The thesis should be followed by an essay map that states the topics or reasons that support your thesis and will be covered in the body paragraphs of the essay.

In the body of the essay, make sure that you use clear topic sentences with transition words for each paragraph (First, Second, and Finally). Also, you need to maintain a clear distinction between your words and ideas and the material from your sources. Your job is to provide introductions, explanations, comparisons and contrasts, and brief evaluations as you present your thinking and King’s thinking on the issue. You will need to quote and paraphrase King in your essay. (Because you state the author and title in the attributive tag before the summary, you will only need to use King’s last name when referring to him for quotes and paraphrases.

In the conclusion of your essay, you can discuss possible resolutions to the problems you have analyzed or broaden your analysis/critique of the King’s essay by discussing your overall impression of horror films.

Please follow these steps as you prepare your paper:

  1. Re-read the texts carefully, and annotate, outline.
  2. Write down King’s thesis for the essay.
  3. Make a list (or chart) of the topics (issues, main points) the text considers.
  4. Briefly, in one paragraph, summarize King’s essay.
  5. Draft a working thesis that provides an overview of the topics or reasons you plan to use as support for the thesis in the body paragraphs: write your thesis, either supporting or refuting the thesis of King’s essay, and follow the thesis with an essay map with three support points or reasons that support your thesis.
  6. Draw up a rough outline of your essay.
  7. Draft the first version of the essay.

Policy Paper #2:

What is the given state’s policy on ensuring the continued supply of oil to the world? How far is it likely to go to ensure this access and what multilateral approaches would it undertake to supplement other approaches to such a blockage? Where does the state traditionally obtain its oil supplies, what short-term alternatives exist, and how self-sufficient is the state? Is the state likely to gain or lose in the event of a sudden shortage in the supply of oil, and is it a member of OPEC?

  1. How do you assess Biopure’s potential in the human market? The animal market?calculate the market potential for Oxyglobin (animal market) and Hemopure (human market). Thus, the answers are quantitative in nature for Q1.
  2. What are the biggest obstacles to success in the human market? The animal market?
  3. How might Oxyglobin be a threat to Hemopure? How might be an asset?
  4. Should Biopure release Oxyglobin? (How would you assess Oxyglobin’s market potential?) If so, at what price? How should it be distributed? In Question 4, you can bring in some qualitative information to further comment on Oxyglobin’s market potential.
  5. If you were Andy Wright, how would you market Oxyglobin?

There will be four written assignments in this course. Questions are based on the following four cases that we will cover in the class: Barco, US Coffee (A), Ontela and Biopure. Questions for these assignments can be found in the Appendix. These assignments can be done individually or in pairs.

These written assignments should not exceed four pages. Up to three pages of supporting material (tables, figures, graphs) may be attached. This material should be referenced in the text of the write-up. Professional quality writing and presentation are expected. Write-ups must be double-spaced, in 12-point font with 1” margins.

Your answers and recommendations should be based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of case data. Your analysis should anticipate potential objections to your recommendations and illustrate its superiority over other alternatives.  It should be analytic and deliberative in tone.  The most persuasive documents are the ones that debate more than advocate.  After all, if you do not look at all alternatives, how do you know that you have chosen the best one? In answering the case questions, do not describe the case, but focus on the following three factors: 1) careful analysis of the situation, 2) description of your decisions or recommendations; 3) supporting logic and analyses. Assignments will be described in more detail as we get closer to the due date. Note that these assignments require data analysis as well as creativity/judgment.
