Pastor: I know you are studying counseling at the University. As you know, I received training in theology, and I well remember Jay Adams’ famous statement: “Psychology is just sinful human beings sinfully thinking about sinful human beings.” I am deeply concerned about the wisdom of pursuing this degree at Liberty. Personally, I think psychology is secular “mumbo jumbo.” 

The Pastor continues: In my opinion, all psychological problems are simply problems of faith, and should be addressed through prayer, repentance, and seeking counsel from the Holy Spirit. After all, you, as a sinner, cannot be expected to help other sinful people–can you? Can psychology really be integrated with theology? What’s your opinion?”

How would you respond to your pastor? In your dialogue with your pastor (“Pastor, thanks for allowing me to answer your concerns. Personally, I agree/disagree. . . “) include the following:

1. Explain why you agree or disagree with Adams’ quote, based on your understanding of the course materials. Adequately justify your position considering both Adams’ presuppositions and implications for Christian counseling. How does your own worldview largely determine your answer? What does the quote say about sources of knowledge, per Entwistle’s discussion? Your answer will indicate which of the models of integration you support.
2. Review the reasons supporting the integration of psychology and theology. Based on your thoughtful analysis, what is the one best argument for attempting to integrate the two disciplines?

Make sure to justify and support your answer. Where appropriate, use in-text citations to support your assertions. Feel free to actually create a dialogue with your pastor, or provide your answer in a narrative. Antimicrobial resistance or drug resistance is defined by the CDC as “the result of microbes changing in ways that reduce or eliminate the effectiveness of drugs, chemicals, or other agents to cure or prevent infections,” (CDC, 2009). According to the CDC, this drug resistance by these microorganisms has been a growing concern for health care workers around the world.

Review the CDC campaign to prevent antimicrobial resistance and the other resources provided this week. Then, address the following in 3-page paper:

• Select a particular type of health care organization to focus on for this assignment. You may bring to mind a health care organization you examined for the Discussion, or a different one. • Word and PowerPoint provide the tools you will need to create this document. You can also create elements in MSWord to cut and Paste into PowerPoint. Select symbols, flow designs and connectors to create your visual representation. If you would prefer to use a different type of software program other than Microsoft to create your visual document, contact your instructor as soon as possible to see if it is acceptable.

ASSIGNMENT

Then create a 1- to 2-page document that addresses the following:

• Use images, symbols, and words to form a graphic representation of the strategic-planning and management process for a particular organization.
• Be creative but keep your final deliverable professional. Visual representations are an efficient and effective way to communicate complex ideas. Assume this is a formal document that you would present to the board of trustees for your organization.
• Please do not copy and paste graphics or figures from other resources. The objective of this assignment is to improve your skills, and there are several applications to prepare graphics and figures such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Visio, OpenOffice etc.
• Please send your application assignment as a Word attachment. You will use the software above to prepare the visual component of this assignment, then insert the graphic(s) into the Word document. Also, please assign a label (i.e., Figure 1. The Representation of XYZ).
• In other words, please do not send a PowerPoint presentation. The end product will be an application assignment similar to the assignments that you prepared earlier, but you are encouraged to add some visual component(s) this time. Discussion 1:

“Training” Please respond to the following:

Select the method of training you feel would be the most effective for a waitstaff team in a full-service restaurant (On the job, internal training, external training, etc). Justify your selection by outlining why this method would be the best way for the waitstaff team to learn the different nuances of their positions.

 

Once you have found the people you think best fit your organizational culture and values, you are then charged to keep them engaged and committed to their work. Outline how you might recognize when an employee might be in need of a change to a different team and offer two ways to make that change.

“Incentives and Their Effects” Please respond to the following:

Research has shown that people have a basic need for recognition. Managers often think that financial rewards are the best incentive for employees. List three ways managers can use incentives to reward and recognize their teams of employees without spending any money. Explain your reasoning.

 

 

Analyze why money is often thought to be the most effective motivator and how the hospitality industry is able to dispel this common assumption.

The purpose of this activity is to examine how we communicate ethically (or not) with people of different genders.

Keeping what you have read and your own experiences in mind, respond to the following:

• In your opinion, is there a difference in the way men and women communicate in interpersonal relationships?
• Is it ethical to speak with women one way and men in a different manner?

PAPER TOPIC:  I am providing the students with two options for their paper. First option is Analysis of Psychopathology in Popular Film, and the second, is Analysis of Psychopathology in a piece of literary work. Both, Literature and Popular media and films are a rich source of material addressing psychopathology and mental illness. You will be asked to view a relevant film or read a work of Literature. Then, I would like students to write a paper that addresses a number of relevant themes including the following:

 

A comprehensive description of psychopathology (symptoms) or particular Psychopathological dynamics (Oedipus complex, Existential Angst) depicted, including a formal DSM/ICD diagnosis of the protagonist or main character. This should include specific and relevant symptoms and biographical information that indicates how the person displays these dynamics or meets criteria for a particular mental disorder.

Identify a minimum of 3 SCENES either in the film or story that best the above points.

A reflection on the positive and negative messages that the film or story portray regarding the particular disorder or psychological dynamics.

Discussion of how well or poorly the movie or Literary work characterizes the particular form(s) of psychopathology depicted.

You will choose the movie or literary work you want to write the paper on, please don’t flood my inbox with questions regarding what movie or book to choose.. For film suggestions, please refer to the “Psychology and Films Links” section below in the syllabus. For literary works, there are plenty of choices, both classical and modern, and you may want to do a web-search for specifics. A very short list of authors I do like are as follows: Sophocles, St Augustine, Avicenna, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Goethe, some of the Russian novelists are great (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekov), Robert Louis Stevenson, American novelists (Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, etc), many mystery novels from Agatha Christy or Arthur Conan Doyle, and many others. You may also choose a biography in lieu of a novel, but you need to check with me on that one.

 

The paper should be written using APA format ONLY, and it should be minimum 2,500 words long NOT counting title page and bibliography. The paper has to have a title page, followed by an Abstract in which summarizes the main idea of your paper. Then you should have an introduction followed by the main body of your paper where you cover numbers 1-4 above each section subtitled. Finally a Conclusion and a Bibliography. Therefore your paper outline should be as follows:

For this Discussion Board, you will write a dialogue between yourself and an imaginary Socrates. You will debate the question of free will versus determinism. Remember that the Socratic Method involves asking a series of questions to clarify key words and ideas. In your dialogue, the imaginary Socrates should be asking clarifying questions, and you will be answering them. Please refer to the excerpt from Plato’s Meno as an example (below) to model your dialogue. This post should be 3–4 paragraphs.

Your post should be a dialogue, which addresses the following questions, using the Socratic Method:

• What is the definition of determinism?
• What is the definition of free will?
• Do you agree that every event has an explanatory cause?
• How do you define event?
• How do you define explanatory cause?
• Do you agree that every human choice or event has an explanatory cause?
• How do you define human choice? How do you define human event? Are they different?
• Do you agree that to have an explanatory cause is to not be free?
• How do you define free?
• Do you think that free will and determinism can coexist in any way?
• Is it possible to have external determinism and internal free will?

To have cohesion and reach solid conclusions, your imaginary Socrates will probably ask you more questions than the ones listed above. Be sure to include all of the above ideas in your dialogue.
