Controversial Punishment Procedures

In a prior assignment, you considered some “controversial treatments.” Perhaps there is no more controversial treatment than the use of highly aversive punishment procedures for children and adolescents, especially those with disabilities. Some behavior analysts strongly oppose the use of aversive punishment procedures (for example, skin shock, aromatic ammonia, lemon juice). Other behavior analysts weigh the short-term discomfort to the client associated with such procedures against the potentially long-term relief from pain and risk to the client that may occur if dangerous behaviors are not effectively decreased or stopped so that more appropriate skills can be taught.

Conduct a Web search for information on aversive procedures being used with children and adolescents. Cite the source and describe the treatment. Prepare 3–4 pro statements that might be given to support the use of the treatment. Also, prepare 3–4 con statements that might be given to oppose the treatment. Finally, give your own opinion. Discuss relevant ethical guidelines that you have learned in this course thus far.

And discuss: Rutgers surveys the different reasons historians have given for the expulsion of the Jews from Rome in the first century C.E.  Who place did Jews have in Roman society at this time?  Were they expelled because of their religious practices, or because they were ‘unruly’ as Rutgers argues?  If so, what caused them to act in this way?  What kind of historical evidence does the author use?

It is commonly assumed that, methodologically, religion and science are poles apart. Science is strictly inductive and empirical; religion is deductive and intuitive. We have seen, however, that once we look beyond what scientists and religionists say they are doing to what they actually do, the differences in methodology become somewhat less impressive. The question: Which do you believe to be most fundamental, the differences or the similarities in the methods of science and religion? Adduce examples to support your more general and theoretical assertions.

NOW — You don’t have to have an opinion concerning the question.  If you choose to do so, you can present both the similarities and differences in the methods of religion and science, and then declare that you aren’t sure which is most fundamental. The question is merely a vehicle with which to organize your presentation of the course material.  Remember — regurgitation (the presentation of LOTS of course material) is good in a test.

Strategic planning and management is a leading management tool. The tasks in the strategic management process include:

We also talked about social media impacts on culture and economy. You will conduct secondary research in academic journal database and write a literature review paper on one of these issues.
