• Describe Your Own Environment

  Consider the natural environment or biome found in the geographic area where you currently live. For example, if you live in the Midwest, the natural biome for this area is the grassland. If you live in Alaska you are likely to live in either the tundra or the boreal forest. Describe the main features of the biome found in your geographic area. Include features such as the environment (moisture, temperature) and any topographic features that would influence the climate (mountains, large bodies of water, etc.).

• Identify Ten Organisms

  Make a list identifying at least ten organisms—at least five plants and five animals—that live in your biome, and describe how these organisms interact with one another. For example, is the relationship competitive or symbiotic?

• Describe Each Organism and its Environmental Needs

  In the speaker notes section in your presentation, briefly describe these ten organisms and the type of conditions—that is, moisture, warm temperatures, or a type of plant—they need in order to survive. Be sure to include the interactions between these organisms and the resources they need to survive. You may wish to use various tools available in Microsoft PowerPoint to visually depict these relationships.

• Hypothesis of a New Environment

  Consider a situation where the temperature of the climate was to increase by an average of ten degrees Celsius. Address the following:

  • How would these organisms survive if the temperature warmed up this much?
  • Would they stay or move to a more suitable environment?
  • Would a new species move in?
  • How would migratory species be impacted?
  • What would happen to your biome?

  Now, consider if your biome changes with the temperature shift. Address the following:

  • What types of plants and animals do you think would live there?
  • What will happen to the rarer species? Will they cease to exist?
  • Identify five plants and five animals that you feel would inhabit this warmer area.
  • Describe this new ecosystem and the new interactions that will most likely exist.
• Additional Topics to Include
  • How would environmental management practices change in your area?
  • Would this drastic shift in temperature impact culture and society in your area?
  • Would you still choose to live in this area after a drastic shift in temperature? Give reasons to support your answer.

Use pictures from the Internet to represent your chosen species, and give credit to these Web sites. Support your statements with 3–5 credible sources. Use the last slide of your presentation as a reference slide.

Please read chapter 2 for Tuesday. The pdf also contains chapter 8, which you will be reading for Thursday.

One minor note… when Augustine talks about “the streets of Babylon” in this chapter, he is referring to passages from the Bible that refer to Babylon as a metaphor for sin and filth.

Questions:

1. Remember that this chapter is primarily about his life just after he leaves his parents house and moves out on his own. According to this chapter, what are some of the issues that he is trying to deal with in his life during this period?

2. Tell me as much as you can about his mother and father from what you read in this chapter… you should be able to say at least a sentence or 2 about each of them, especially regarding how they treat Augustine.

3. Focus closely on Augustine’s story about the pear tree. What are the basic facts of the story? How does Augustine interpret his own actions now that he is reflecting back on them? We will discuss this quite a bit in class.

Many project today operate within some sort of a matrix organization. Discuss the differences between a strong and a weak matrix organization.

Discuss the pros and cons of a matrix organization for project management. As a project manager, what types of things would you need to do well in order for your project to work within a matrix organization? Justify your responses.

Student will read three professional magazine or academic journal articles dealing with some aspect of Quality and write a 1 to 2 page review of each article.

 

Normally, the articles you select should not be more than 10 years old.  However, classic articles in the field or articles referenced in the textbook (see chapter endnotes) are also permitted, no matter how old.

 

The reviews are to be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font, single-spaced with a blank line between paragraphs, 1.25-inch left and right margins, and 1-inch top and bottom margins.

 

Use the article titles and the journal names as the titles of your reviews.  Attach a copy of the first page of the article at the end of each review. Do not staple the three reviews together.

 

The reviews are due in class (as “hard copy”) on Wednesday, November 18th.

The reviews should clearly and concisely explain the importance of the article’s results in ordinary language. You may express an opinion about the article, but this is not required.

You should use professional magazines or academic journals, but if there is an exceptional newspaper article on quality, that will be acceptable. However, only one newspaper article will be permitted.

 

I plan to do a short demonstration in class on how to find articles online at the Library.

Read the case study, Politics at Walt Disney on page 414 of the course textbook, and write a 1000-1500 word essay with two high-level section headers:

 

1.  Conflict, Politics, and Conflict resolution (in this section answer the questions on page 414)

2. Effects of Power on Organizational Structure  (in this section, include discussion that:

a. identifies sources and effects of power of an organizational structure and

b. recomends how to evaluate organizational theory and design/strategy in a global operations environment)

 

Your paper should be 1000-1500 words in length, not including the title page and reference page. You are required to cite Chapter 14 and various other chapters in your textbook and at least one article from the CSU Online Library.  All sources used including textbook, must be referenced, paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying in-text citations in the proper APA Format.

After reading the QHSR, you will draft a policy statement for it. Note that a policy statement is intended to reflect the evaluation of a policy’s relevance or applicability for specific usage. In this case, you will craft a policy statement revealing your evaluation of the QHSR and its value for guiding the county in preparing emergency response plans. Your policy statement will serve to educate members of your county’s EM team and also provide a means for you to offer specific recommendations relating to those portions of the QHSR that you consider most meritorious for the county’s consideration.

In a 5–7 page policy statement, you will do the following:

• Provide a brief review of the purpose of the QHSR and your assessment as to its potential value for the county as it rewrites old plans and develops new ones.
  • As you have a page limitation, this assessment should not exceed one full page.
• Consider and capture, in your own words, a definition and the usefulness of various terms in the QHSR, including homeland security, preparedness, and homeland security enterprise. Add other terms as you deem necessary.
  • Tie these terms to other strategies, frameworks, policies with which you are familiar, or which you studied in this course.
  • The National Response Framework (NRF) and National Incident Management System (NIMS) are two strategic documents that you might use.
• Select two of the five missions—and each one’s listed goals—that are outlined in the QHSR that you will advise your county to begin with, aiding the team members to become educated about the strategic framework and its many elements and making connections from strategy to local community operational use. In choosing which missions you select, you might contemplate some of the following components:
  • Mission 1: Preventing Terrorism and Enhancing Security
    • This mission is very expansive, as is each subordinate goal
    • Think about whether terrorism is a truly likely threat—of course terrorism can occur everywhere, but limited resources compel communities to allocate these judiciously with maximum benefit for least cost
    • Think about the likelihood of weapons of mass destruction, or chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) capabilities being used in your county
  • Mission 2: Securing and Managing Our Borders
    • Consider whether your county is reasonably concerned with border issues
    • Does your county include ports (air, sea, rail, or land)?
    • What prevalence is there of transnational criminal activity?
  • Mission 3: Enforcing and Administering Our Immigration Laws
    • Is immigration a concern for your county or state? Could it be in the future?
    • Which population seems the greatest concern, if any?
  • Mission 4: Safeguarding and Securing Cyberspace
    • Cyber threats exist for all critical infrastructure and operations that support communities.
    • This may be especially critical if information technology is an industry in your region.
  • Mission 5: Ensuring Resilience to Disasters
    • If your county has any likely natural (or manmade or accidental) threats or vulnerabilities, this mission can readily be tied to the county’s needs and objectives
• Choose your two missions and summarize each one and its goals briefly in your policy statement.
  • For each mission, make clear and direct connections to the missions and goals and the county’s needs, objectives or capabilities.
    • Needs could include threats, hazards, or vulnerabilities as you assess them.
    • You will not need to have first-person or source information to provide details related to the County—you may use your own critical analysis skills and determine what these might be (For example, flooding is unlikely if the county is primarily composed of drought-prone plains.)
• Do not exceed seven pages for the body of your paper. Use your own words to make these summaries to the greatest extent possible—but if you lift any material directly from the QHSR, make certain to properly reference it. Do not make your product an opinion piece. While it is based on your perspectives, write affirmatively, using a professional and official tone and language. The words I, our, we, you, (and the like) should not appear anywhere.

Evolution of Laws

MMA was signed by President Bush in 2003. The MMA brought about sweeping changes that increased enrollment and improved access to Medicare Plans. Similarly, the PPACA was signed into law by President Obama in 2010. The law is expected to significantly increase access to Medicaid for the uninsured, low-income families, and individuals. Medicaid managed care has been implemented by most states, mainly because of rising costs, plan quality, access to providers, and the decrease in state revenues and federal matching funding. Medicare has explored managed care for the same reasons: to reduce costs, improve quality and improve access to providers. Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research the following two topics and write a paper evaluating the impact of these policies on Medicare and Medicaid managed care.
