Explain the topic you chose and why it is interesting or controversial.

One of the most common inferences in life is the inference to the best explanation (sometimes called abductive reasoning). We use this type of reasoning to infer what would best explain the things that we see. Chapter 5 in our book demonstrates ways in which this type of reasoning helps us to explain the world around us.

Prepare: To prepare for this lesson take a close look at the sections from Chapter 5 on “Inference to the Best Explanation,” “Form,” “Virtue of Simplicity,” and “How to Assess an Explanation.” Choose a topic that is difficult or controversial to explain. Some good topics include hoaxes, unusual sightings (e.g. UFOs, bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster), the supernatural or paranormal, events that are the subject of conspiracy theories, unsolved crimes or other court cases, etc.

Reflect: Do a little research to find a specific topic and learn about explanations on both sides. Consider what you think might best explain the observed facts of the case.

Write: Explain the topic you chose and why it is interesting or controversial. Present good arguments on more than one side of the issue (e.g. competing explanations of the facts). Analyze both arguments that you have presented. Then present your own argument for your theory that you feel will best explain this phenomenon. Are there any holes in your theory? Is there any information that would be likely to strengthen or weaken your case?

Discuss and develop a list of attitudes towards three brands that you have had experience with.

Functional Theory of Attitudes

In chapter 7 of your textbook, Daniel Katz’s functional theory of attitudes is discussed. For each of the four functions discussed, develop a list of attitudes towards three brands that you have had experience with. Have your attitudes changed over time? Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Atmospherics

In their article, “Atmospherics, service encounters and consumer decision making: An integrative perspective”, Hoffman and Turley hypothesize that the U.S. economy is moving to an experience economy. Use a drug store, a middle-of-the-road department store, and a home improvement warehouse that you have purchased from to generate at least five recommendations for improving the atmospherics of each of those businesses. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

Reflect on and synthesize learning with regard to new knowledge and insights on the needs, challenges, and opportunities for children with special needs.

Introduction

You began this course with a growing foundation in child development to support your learning with regard to the physical, emotional, social, and educational challenges and opportunities for children with special needs. Most likely you also entered the course with some personal beliefs and opinions with regard to children with special needs. Now, after much reading, thinking, sharing, and learning, your knowledge about many aspects of life—and specifically, education—f or children with special needs has increased. Some of your personal views may have changed as well.

This week, as the course wraps up, your goal is to reflect on what you have learned, on the insights you have gained, and on assumptions and misconceptions you have dispelled that will help you as a child development professional work with greater respect, understanding, and sensitivity for children who have special needs and their families.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Reflect on and synthesize learning with regard to new knowledge and insights on the needs, challenges, and opportunities for children with special needs

Determine whether the reported percentage demonstrated absolute or relative change.

In this assignment, you will identify the uses and misuses of information presented in the form of percentages. Some examples have been provided in the lectures for this module. Search the Internet to find more examples. These can be examples of percentages used in advertising claims, reported results from a study, or information shared by a government agency.

First, search for one of the following types of usage of percentages:

  • Use of percentages as a fraction: This will be the use of the word ofto imply multiplication. Was it an effective way to represent the information in the context of the example you found?
  • Use of percentages to describe change:In the example you found, determine whether the reported percentage demonstrated absolute or relative change. Show how you calculated this. Explain whether this was an effective way to represent this information.
  • Use of percentages for comparison: In the example you found, determine if the reported percentage demonstrated absolute or relative change. Show your calculation. How effective was this way of representing the information?

Next, find an example of one of the following misuses of percentages:

  • Use of a shifting reference value: In this situation, the base values are changed as differing values of percentages are applied as increases, decreases, or both. Remember that percentage increases, decreases, or both do not have a cumulative effect. Be sure to demonstrate why your example fits this category.
  • Use of percentage to represent less than nothing:Look for an example where you notice a reduction of some percentage greater than 100. Demonstrate why your example fits this category.
  • Situation where the average percentage is reported: In general, you cannot average percentages. The result is not representative of what actually has occurred in the situation in question. Demonstrate why your example fits this category.

Write your initial response in a minimum of 200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Explain why you believe cause-related marketing is often successful.

“Healthcare Marketing” Please respond to the following:

  • Using an example to support your response, compare and contrast social marketing and cause-related marketing. Explain why you believe cause-related marketing is often successful.
  • Imagine you have just inherited $1 million and you want to establish a healthcare enterprise. On what segments of the healthcare population would you choose to focus? Briefly describe the steps you would take to divide the broad market into these selected segments.

Discuss strategies to help you maintain your professional role and objectivity.

Counselors who work with children and adolescents often need to balance their clients’ or students’ rights, their own views of moral and ethical behavior, and the demands of ethical codes and state laws.

Choose one of the following vignettes:

A 13-year-old boy describes himself as being gay and discloses he has been sexually intimate with his 17-year-old friend LeRoy for the past 3 months. He is worried he may have a sexually transmitted disease. He wants your advice and support but does not want you to tell his parents.
A 17-year-old girl reveals she is 4 months pregnant and is terrified to tell her parents or the father of the child; she believes they will force her to keep the baby. The girl admits she has already contacted a couple she found on the Internet to discuss placing the baby for adoption when it is born. She wants your help with her mood as she has been very sad and depressed.
A 16-year-old boy who has an underlying medical disorder that causes chronic pain reveals he has been receiving medical marijuana from his dad who has a medical marijuana card. He wants your help communicating with his teacher who feels he has been distant and sluggish in class.

Now, answer these questions:

Is there anything in this vignette that is illegal? Cite your state law.
Is there anything in this vignette that is unethical? Cite the relevant codes from the 2014 ACACode of Ethics and/or the 2010 ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors.
Is there anything in this vignette that conflicts with your personal beliefs? If so, discuss strategies to help you maintain your professional role and objectivity.

Assignment 3 Part 2: Business Plan – Draft

This assignment consists of two (2) sections: a draft of your business plan and an income statement containing your business plan financials. Note: You must submit both sections as separate files for the completion of this assignment.

You must intend to raise money for your startup company. You can start with money from friends and family but at some point you will need funds from outside investors, either angels or venture capitalists, depending on how much money you project you will need to raise. Another possible angle is to develop money through crowdfunding, assuming your product meets the demand of such audiences.

Before you can raise money, you must develop a business plan that convinces an investor that your company will succeed.

Section 1: Business Plan (MS Word or equivalent)

Write an approximately fifteen (15) page draft of your business plan in which you:

  1. Revise the components of the following previously submitted sections based on the feedback you have received.

What is the state of the art, what is being planned, and is it sufficient, realistic, or still too far from doing what we need to get there?

Details on the requirements for the paper:

Pick one of the subject areas discussed further down. For each of the subject areas pick a few major issues and discuss those.

  • Don’t produce a somewhat random collection of facts or possibilities; it is better to discuss a few in detail than present a rambling shopping list with no particular message. Consult reference materials and cite those. See below for details on how to cite. Take a position: If you write about space travel, for example, you might want to see if you can make up your mind as to what seem like the most plausible options and what seem less likely possibilities. It is recommended not just summarize what you read, but attach your own opinion on the subject you are writing about.

  • The essay will look very different depending on your point of view, so you need to decide what your major message is in advance. In writing your paper, always keep in mind: “What is or are my principal goal(s) in writing this paper?”, don’t just produce a summary but include your own analysis of the information to reach a conclusion or set of conclusions that you want to convey to the reader. That is why it is critical to consult the reference material before you arrive at your major message and before you start writing.

  • Avoid direct citations. The paper should be written in your own words, with nothing copied from anywhere or anyone. Literal citations in a paper of this nature should be kept to a minimum, if used at all. Any literal citation should be in quotation marks.

  • The paper should explore the principle topic as stated. Try to stick to just one or a few points you are trying to make, keep it focused. Materials to be consulted can range from text books, to science books or science articles in journals, etc. Do include more than just one reference, don’t summarize just one article or textbook section. Try to look at your topic from difference perspectives, including your own. You want to write something that others would find interesting to read.

TOPIC: Interstellar travel – The search for new propulsion mechanisms and the prospects for traveling to the nearby stars. What is the state of the art, what is being planned, and is it sufficient, realistic, or still too far from doing what we need to get there?

Discuss the social benefits and costs of protecting IPRs.

The paper must be typed and double-spaced in 12-point font with normal one-inch margins, in which case a 2,500 word document will be approximately 8.5 pages long.

All sources used in the paper must be listed alphabetically by author in a “List of References” appearing at the end of the paper. Do not list items that are not cited in the paper. Use a consistent style of footnotes, endnotes or textual references to cite sources. The List of References itself, of course, does not count toward the 2,500 words. Staple the paper at the top left-hand corner. Please do not place the paper in a plastic or cardboard cover or binder of any kind.

Topic: Intellectual Property Rights Intellectual property rights (IPRs) – such as patents on scientific innovations and performance rights for artists – are protected in order to ensure that producers have sufficient incentive to invest in the creation of new products that benefit consumers. But new technologies and globalization have made the protection of some IPRs extremely costly. Developing countries, in particular, face a difficult decision in determining how much resources to spend on protecting IPRs. Some analysts argue that a cost-benefit calculation should determine which IPRs are worth protecting and the extent and type of protection that is socially efficient. Discuss the social benefits and costs of protecting IPRs.

Describe ways that management can keep track of job status and location during production.

Read “Space Age Furniture Company” in Chapter 9 of your text. Respond to the following and include any Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) calculations:

  1. Develop an MRP for Space Age Furniture Company using the information in the case including the production of sub-assemblies in lot sizes of 1,000.
  2. The lot size of 1,000 for sub-assemblies has produced a lumpy demand for part 3079. Suggest ways for improvements over sub-assemblies in lot sizes of 1,000.
  3. Analyze the trade-off between overtime costs and inventory costs.
  4. Calculate a new MRP that improves the base MRP.
  5. Compare and contrast the types of production processing—job shop, batch, repetitive, or continuous—and determine which the primary mode of operation is and why.
  6. Describe ways that management can keep track of job status and location during production.
  7. Recommend any changes that might be beneficial to the company and/or add value for the customer.

The final case study should demonstrate your understanding of the reading as well as the implications of new knowledge. The paper should integrate readings, scholarly sources, and life experiences. It may include explanation and examples from previous events as well as implications for future applications.

The purpose of the final case study is for you to culminate the learning achieved in the course by describing your understanding and application of knowledge in the field of operations management.

YOU MUST ANSWER EVERY LETTER ABOVE THOROUGHLY PROPERLY….MUST USE PROPER GRAMMAR, PRONUNCIATIONS AND WRITING…
