The following is a list of the questions you will need to answer for the Portfolio Project due at the end of Module 8. Your project will need to be submitted as one MSWord document.  If you use Excel spreadsheets to answer the questions, please copy and paste them into your Word document.  You can only submit ONE document for the Portfolio Project, so all of your work needs to be contained in that one document.

PROBLEM

 

The main focus of this course is to understand rules in International Accounting. One such focus is to understand the major differences in US GAAP and IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). The portfolio project is divided into two parts; provide detailed responses to both parts of the project.

 

Part I

 

1. Provide a detailed history of the convergence project between US GAAP and IFRS.
2. Discuss in detail the major differences between US GAAP and IFRS applications.
3. Provide a list of countries that have adopted IFRS and how cultural differences can impact interpretation of IFRS.

Part II

 

1. Explain Transfer Pricing in detail.
2. Provide a detailed example of how Transfer Pricing can be used successfully by Multinational Corporations.
3. Please discuss in detail various methods of translating foreign currency financial statements.

2.     Utilizing the “Conceptual Model for a Sales Force Organization Audit” found in Chapter 13 of your textbook, assume the role of an auditor to evaluate each of the elements discussed (sales management functions, sales force organization planning system, sales manager evaluation, environment of the sales force organization) on ONE of the following companies: Coca Cola, PepsiCo, PPG, Sysco Systems, or Johnson and Johnson.

 

3. Discuss the sales management planning process steps. Use the products or services of a company for which you have worked or one you know well as your example. Include the results that should be achieved by accomplishing each step.

 

4. You are the sales manager for a new upscale line of skin care products based in Hollywood, CA. You are tasked with hiring a nationwide sales team consisting of five territories: northeast, southeast, midwest, northwest, and southwest. Using the information provided in Chapter 8 of our textbook, discuss how you will find and recruit your sales team and know that they are a fit for the role.

 

5. Using the Internet as your resource for information, provide examples of people who demonstrate the leadership styles based on Theory H (explained in Chapter 10 of our textbook). Briefly explain why each person fits his/her designated leadership style.

 

 

6. You are the national sales manager for an industrial chemical company. Your industry is being inundated by new entrants in the market, and your company has lost market share for the past five quarters. Adopt one of the contemporary approaches to leadership found in Chapter 10 of our textbook—transformational leadership, Pygmalion leadership, or empowerment. Use the foundation of your selected approach to explain what you could do to turn around your sales results. Please include your rationale for selecting the approach that you did.

 

You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

Your completed Project 2 Part B, should total approximately 8 pages, double-spaced, roughly 2000 words.

For Part B, your essay should be addressing the questions/points below:

• Do we see an overall warming of the environment?
• Some theorists envisioned that we would see a more pronounced warming of minimum temperatures than maximum temperatures.  This might result in a reduced range of temperatures.  What trends does the data show?
• Many theories that look at global warming envisage more drought and less surplus water conditions for inland or continental locations.  Therefore, we might see some trends in precipitation amounts and the frequency of certain amounts of precipitation.  What do the trends show?
• In reference to actual evapotranspiration, surplus/deficit conditions and runoff/streamflow, what might we expect with a warming climate?
• Are there clear-cut answers in the trends that we see?
• What does that tell us about researching environmental issues like global warming?
• Are there other types of data or information that we need to look at to make a worthwhile analysis?  If so, what would they be?
• What are the implications of the results of this study?
• Can you link any of the climate trends to human agency?
• If the trends continue in their current direction, what are the potential implications for people living in the Wabash Watershed?

In short, we are looking at a specific geographic area, the Wabash Watershed.  We are looking at a specific time period, 1961-1990, utilizing raw, 5-year average, and 10-year average data, with respect to temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, moisture surplus, moisture deficit, and surface runoff.  What does this data tell about this region over this time period, and what does it indicate about the future?  Does this tell us anything, positively or negatively about global warming theory?

Discussion 1

 

As this week’s material points out, we are living in times of immense change. One of the essential tasks of an organization’s leadership is to lead organizations in a way that ensures that the entire organization is committed to the change and that support mechanisms are in place to sustain change. Research several online industries that are currently stressed by changing marketplaces and demographics: the newspaper and publishing Industries, entertainment media outlets, brick and mortar retail, and even campus bookstores.

1. Choose an organization within one of the industries listed above, or one of your own choosing that is currently impacted by a changing marketplace.

2. How would you apply Kotter’s eights steps toward leading change within that organization?

3. Provide examples of the desired outcomes and support mechanisms you would utilize.

Adaptive work is accomplished by finding a solution to seemingly intractable problems facing leaders; the solution is neither technical, nor obvious. As the material illustrates, leaders must motivate organization members to face demanding situations that arise from the organization’s own culture and values. Using the organization you chose within this week’s first discussion, analyze an adaptive challenge facing this organization.

Reflect: As you learned in this week’s readings, many constitutional scholars consider the prohibition of unreasonable searches and seizures as one of the most basic freedoms that the Bill of Rights clearly protects. This central freedom supports and protects other essential freedoms, like free speech, press, assembly, and religion. Recently, this core freedom has become a very controversial debate topic as large American cities, like New York City, have instituted police procedures described as “stop and frisk.” In these cities, when a police officer has reason to believe that a person is armed there is a set protocols for police officers that they must accomplish in order to determine if the suspected individual is a threat to public safety. For example, officers can make stops based on suspicious activities and frisk individuals for weapons. Courts have found this to be within the boundaries of the Fourth Amendment until just recently.

Write: In your initial post of at least 250 words, utilize the Constitution, established case law, and scholarly sources to complete the following assignments:

• Describe one argument that supports “stop and frisk” policies.
• Describe one argument that opposes “stop and frisk” policies.
• Explain which argument is the most constitutionally sound. Why?

Reflect: Every American accused of a crime that could result in loss of life, liberty, and properly has the right to fair treatment or due process. One of the most divisive aspects of due process is capital punishment and the prevention of cruel and unusual punishment to those convicted fairly of crimes. Specifically, the Eighth Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, and the ongoing debate revolves around if the death penalty is or is not considered cruel and unusual punishment.

Write: In your initial post of at least 250 words utilize the Constitution, established case law, and scholarly sources to complete the following assignments:

• Describe one argument that supports the death penalty.
• Describe one argument that opposes the death penalty.
• Explain which argument is the most credible, reliable, and valid. Why?

Imagine you work at a company and it is time for an employee named Jim’s annual review. While he was a model employee the first nine (9) months of the year, recently Jim has been coming in late. It has not been just a few minutes each day, either. It is starting to cause problems in the production line. In this assignment, write a one (1) page summary of your conversation with Jim. How will you address his recent performance issues while still praising him for his previous nine (9) months of good work? Your goal is to balance the negative and positive feedback so that Jim will leave motivated to do his best.

Mark Davis has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) for reckless driving, speeding, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter as the result of a crash that occurred on a night out with his friends. Mark has been out on bail and pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned. The Judge set a date for Mark’s trial and his defense team has been working to collect information about the technology used by the Highway Patrol to reconstruct the crash.

District Attorney O’Malley offered Mark a plea bargain, but Mark chose to take his chances at trial. Mark’s attorney, Mr. Chen Long, advised Mark that accepting the plea offer was completely up to Mark, although Mr. Long advised against accepting it because the defense planned to highlight mistakes made by law enforcement during the investigation that could create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors.

The trial begins and during the voir dire of potential jurors, several individuals are excused because they have previous knowledge of Mark’s case from the media. Two individuals stated that they could not be impartial because they had loved ones killed in alcohol related crashes as well. Eventually, two men and ten women were seated in Mark’s trial.

District Attorney O’Malley presented the State’s case clearly and concisely depicting a night on the town full of heavy drinking, which ultimately resulted in Mark’s actions causing the death of one individual and injuring four others. Highway Patrolman Green explained to the jury that he immediately suspected alcohol when he arrived on scene because Mark appeared to be intoxicated when they spoke. Following the Judge ruling that it was admissible and not prejudicial, Sergeant Rodney Monroe, from the Highway Patrol Reconstruction Team presented their reconstruction complete with a high-tech computer animated reenactment of the crash. During the cross examination, Defense Attorney Long challenged the reconstruction because the Defense Crash Reconstruction Expert had discovered errors in the mathematical calculations for vehicle speed. The jury appeared to have liked the reconstruction very much regardless of the errors highlighted by the defense.

Mark was convicted of DWI, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter; however, he was acquitted of reckless driving and speeding. The Jury said they could not convict Mark of those offenses because of the mistakes made by law enforcement officers during the investigation.

Because Mark pleads not guilty, but was convicted during trial and had two prior DWI offenses, he was sentenced to ten years in the State Prison. Defense Attorney Long immediately notified the court of an impending appeal that would be filed by the defendant. In a report, using external sources to support your claims, answer the following:

1. Compare and contrast the roles of the Judge, Jury, District Attorney (Prosecutor), and Defense Attorney. What are their primary functions and purposes in the courtroom Workgroup?
2. Discuss the rights of the defendant in your state during the trial phase of the criminal justice process.
3. Discuss the rights of the victims and/or their families in your state during the pre-trial and trial phase of the criminal justice process. Would it be unusual for the family of a deceased victim to become angered by a slow criminal justice process or one where they are not permitted by law to be given information about the facts or evidence in the case by the District Attorney’s Office before the trial?
4. Compare and contrast plea-bargaining versus going to trial. Historically, opponents to plea bargains have claimed that they are used to alleviate heavy workloads of prosecutors (district attorneys). Prosecutors argue that plea-bargaining is a necessary part of the criminal justice process for several reasons. Where is the future of the criminal justice process headed in this regard?
5. Analyze how the Highway Patrol’s computer animated reenactment might have related to the Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) effect in the courtroom.
