Would union-level wages and benefits provide an economic boost to many of the Southern states that have some of the lowest average incomes and highest levels of poverty in the nation?

section 1

Search the web for all you can find both on the effort to unionize the VW plant in Tennessee and the Mercedes plant in Alabama.  The paper you will write will essentially have two sections, and should be appropriately separated. In section 1 you should analyze the approach/strategy utilized by the UAW in Tennessee, with the approach used in Alabama. What are the differences and similarities between the approaches? Are conditions in the two plants similar or different that would justify using either the same or a different approach? Why do you think they again focused on a plant making a German brand, what is the significance of doing so? Discuss these questions and whether you think the UAW will be any more successful this time around, in either Tennessee or Alabama.

In section 2 of the paper you will need to explore the social, political, and economic factors at play in the South. Why is an anti-union attitude apparently so prevalent in the South? Who does this opposition to unions benefit and why? Who does it harm and why? Would union-level wages and benefits provide an economic boost to many of the Southern states that have some of the lowest average incomes and highest levels of poverty in the nation? Why or why not? What do you believe are the reasons behind the opposition to unions in the South? And why is the UAW determined to unionize plants there?

write a 6 page (double space) paper (exclusive of cover and reference pages). The paper must be word-processed, double-spaced with 1” margins, 12 point font, follow APA 6th Edition format, and be free of spelling and grammatical errors. At a minimum, you should utilize, cite within the text of your paper, and reference at least three sources for each of the two sections. How do the conclusions of your literature review relate to the various specialization areas in psychology?

Assignment 1: LASA # 2: PowerPoint Presentation

Utilizing the information you compiled for your literature review paper, and the feedback you received from your instructor about the literature review, prepare a 10-15 minute Power Point presentation on your topic, summarizing the key points and conclusions. Be sure to direct this presentation to an audience in the community. For example, if your paper pertained to a topic in developmental psychology, direct your presentation toward parents, or a parenting center. If your topic pertained to substance abuse, direct it toward a community service agency which may use this information for educating teens or parents about preventing drug use, or current clients about treatments and facilities available. Please state in your presentation the specific audience toward whom your presentation is aimed. Include a reference page in APA format, as well as speaker notes and an audio file with your presentation.

Your slides should provide answers to the following questions:

  • What was your topic?
  • What question did you hope to answer by completing this literature review paper? Explain the practical implications of the conclusions of the literature review and the audience to which they are directed.
  • Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? In other words, which of those is supported by the existing evidence? Be sure to include full coverage of the arguments, including strengths and weaknesses of each of them, supported by your findings from reviewing the relevant articles.
  • Did the researchers consider multicultural factors in their studies? If not, what factors may be involved? What multicultural factors should future studies include?
  • What ethical issues are related to your topic and/or discussed in the studies you reviewed?
  • How do the conclusions of your literature review relate to the various specialization areas in psychology? Tie them to as many as apply from the following areas: biological, cognitive, developmental, social, personality theory, psychopathology, and applied psychology.
  • How can the conclusions of your literature review inform the population towards whom your presentation is directed? How can they apply this information to their daily lives? What advice or ‘take home message’ can you provide to your audience based on the research you reviewed?
  • What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study?
  • Why is your research question important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic?

Your presentation should also follow these guidelines:

  • It should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length.
  • It should be clear, concise, and professional.  Writing should be free of spelling and grammatical errors; it should conform to current APA style (including any in-text citations).
  • It should include graphs, tables, figures, or images illustrating your ideas.
  • There should be a final slide listing references in current APA style.
  • The bulk of the text should be placed in the Notes pages of each slide. Keep the amount of text on the slide, itself, to a minimum.
  • You should record an audio file of your oral presentation. You should also type the text of the speech you would give while showing these slides to an audience should be typed into the Notes area.  If you are unable to use the audio feature, the Notes text will suffice.
  • You can refer to the Power Point tips document provided in the Doc Sharing section of the course.

Discuss any biotic interactions your organism has with other organisms that may use it for food, shelter or reproduction.

Presentation requirements ON Kincaid’s lupine  <—–(FLOWER)

  • Your presentation will be submitted as a weblink that you have created either from building a Prezi presentation or a Screencast-o-matic (SOM) of a slide presentation.  Instructions for creating and uploading your presentation for either Prezi or SOM are below.
  • If your presentation is a Prezi it must contain 10 – 20 elements (what we would call slides in power point).  If your presentation is an SOM is must contain 12 – 20 slides and be no longer than 15 minutes in length.
  • There must be a visual element (photos. videos).
  • There must be a narrative component (audio or written narration).
  • You will submit this presentation to your classmates to review and discuss as a part of the Week Eight Forum.

PLANTS/FUNGI

I.             Organism Introduction: your presentation must contain:

a.    The common and scientific names of your organism

b.    Where you observed your organism (e.g. country, state, park, zoo).

c.    A discussion on why you selected this organism

d.   If possible, a picture of you observing your organism safely in the field.

II.           Energy Ecology: your presentation must address how the plant/fungus obtains and stores its energy.  For example: how does the plant harvest energy using leaves or body mass?

III.         Reproductive Ecology: your presentation must address how your plant/fungus reproduces.  Include a discussion on any of the specific structures or cell types that are required for reproduction.

IV.         Habitat: your presentation must discuss where your organism lives.  This does not refer to a city or state; rather it is the natural environment in which your organism lives.  Some factors to consider when discussing habitat include abiotic factors like soil or water as well as biotic factors like predators, prey or hosts.

V.           Biotic Interactions: your presentation should discuss any biotic interactions your organism has with other organisms that may use it for food, shelter or reproduction.

Explain the financial factors that you are employing in the selected decisions.

Assignment 2: LASA 1—Financial Decisions

In both your professional and personal life, you will make a variety of decisions. You should consider the financial and nonfinancial aspects while making decisions.

To evaluate scenarios, you will also use some tools such as net present value (NPV) and return on investment (ROI) that you have discussed so far.

In this assignment, you will evaluate the financial aspects of making decisions.

Tasks:

Investigate any two of the following financial decisions:

  • Using net present value calculations, determine which has a higher ROI
    • Buying a Chevrolet Impala today for $30,000, putting $15,000 down and taking a six-year loan for the rest at 5%

      or

    • Leasing the Impala for 4 years at $329 a month. Since $4000 is due when the lease is signed, the rate will equal to 5%.

Show your work and explain your rationale.

  • Commit to buy a vacation home in the climate of your choice, rent the home out when you are not using it, or sign a five-year lease for the home for the two months a year you plan on using it.
  • Another buy-or-lease alternative. You could buy the home for $300,000, putting 20% down and renting it out at $1400 a month. Which would make more sense? Renting or leasing the home? Explain your rationale.
  • Lease your home for the next three years or sell it with the intent to return to the same geographic area after you complete a three-year expatriate assignment in the country of your choice.
  • Given the facts above, should you lease the house or sell it? The current market value is approximately $320,000. Explain your rationale, and show your work.

For the two options that you selected (and using the figures given above for those options), investigate the realistic assumptions for your location and include the information you found in the analysis. Create a paper in about 1,000–1,200 words, including the following:

  • Initial information/approach: purchase price, rebate, down payment, amount to finance, etc.
  • Payments formulas and calculations
  • Explanation of the financial factors that you are employing in the selected decisions
  • Conclusion containing the “best answer” for your personal life on the basis of these financial factors
  • Probability of following the recommended “best answer” (assuming that these are the only decision options)

Use the following information for Questions 1 and 2:

Boehm Corporation has had stable earnings growth of 8% a year for the past 10 years and in 2013 Boehm paid dividends of $2.6 million on net income of $9.8 million. However, in 2014 earnings are expected to jump to $12.6 million, and Boehm plans to invest $7.3 million in a plant expansion. This one-time unusual earnings growth won’t be maintained, though, and after 2014 Boehm will return to its previous 8% earnings growth rate. Its target debt ratio is 35%.

Calculate Boehm’s total dividends for 2014 under each of the following policies:

1.         (a) Its 2014 dividend payment is set to force dividends to grow at the long-run growth rate in earnings.

(b) It continues the 2013 dividend payout ratio.

2.         (a) It uses a pure residual policy with all distributions in the form of dividends (35% of the $7.3 million investment is financed with debt).

(b) It employs a regular-dividend-plus-extras policy, with the regular dividend being based on the long-run growth rate and the extra dividend being set according to the residual policy.

Use the following information for Questions 3 and 4:

Schweser Satellites Inc. produces satellite earth stations that sell for $100,000 each. The firm’s fixed costs, F, are $2 million, 50 earth stations are produced and sold each year, profits total $500,000, and the firm’s assets (all equity financed) are $5 million. The firm estimates that it can change its production process, adding $4 million to investment and $500,000 to fixed operating costs. This change will (1) reduce variable costs per unit by $10,000 and (2) increase output by 20 units, but (3) the sales price on all units will have to be lowered to $95,000 to permit sales of the additional output. The firm has tax loss

carryforwards that render its tax rate zero, its cost of equity is 16%, and it uses no debt.

3.         What is the incremental profit? To get a rough idea of the project’s profitability, what is the project’s expected rate of return for the next year (defined as the incremental profit divided by the investment)? Should the firm make the investment? Why or why not?

4.         Would the firm’s break-even point increase or decrease if it made the change?

Explore to what extent Guanxi may contribute to what many perceive as a crisis of rampant corruption in the country.

Recall that all essays must start with the opening statement below. For paragraphs, 2 and 3 do not repeat the questions. They are there to help you in writing the essay.

Guanxi is a Chinese word that describes personalized networks of influence and exchange. In China, individuals rely on Guanxi, networks, to obtain jobs and to get other things done. Cultivating a network is central to Chinese society and politics. Guanxi works on the principle of reciprocity. Loosely translated, reciprocity means “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.” Many have argued that the culture of Guanxi explains why China is beset with severe problems of corruption. China’s current president, Xi Jinping has made fighting corruption a top priority of the Chinese state and communist party. In this short essay, I will start out by outlining problems of corruption in contemporary China. Then, I will explore to what extent Guanxi may contribute to what many perceive as a crisis of rampant corruption in the country.

Analyze the role this director took during the emergency or crisis. Provide a rationale for your response.

We have witnessed many Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) directors, each with their unique style of leadership, throughout U.S. history. Some directors are noteworthy for their achievements, while others are infamous for their lack of performance.

Using research on the Internet and various Strayer library journals or databases, research FEMA directors’ actions over the past thirty (30) years during major U.S. emergencies and crises.

Write a five to eight (5-8) page paper in which you:

Select one (1) FEMA director whom you believe performed admirably during a major U.S. emergency or crisis. Next, analyze the role this director took during the emergency or crisis. Provide a rationale for your response.
Select one (1) FEMA director whom you believe performed below standards during a major U.S. emergency or crisis. Next, analyze the role this director took during the emergency or crisis. Provide a rationale for your response.
Determine one (1) major decision that each director you selected from Question 1 and Question 2 made which changed the course of recovery from the disaster dramatically. Next, evaluate the level and extent that this decision affected disaster recovery. Provide a rationale for your response.
Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other related websites do not qualify as academic resources.
