What ethical, social, and political issues arise with the use of information systems?

Ethical, Social, and Political Issues

Information is data that is framed in a specific context. In this sense, information is contextual data that has a level of inherent value. Data might be the binary 0s and 1s on a hard drive, but information is the combination of that binary data into a document, media file, or database. Therefore, information systems are methods of managing the value of different types of data. The value of the data might be in the personal records such as social security number, addresses, or shopping habits that are linked together to form an online shopping cart and on-click purchasing. The value of information provides for the potential for ethical, social, and political issues within an organization. An example of these ethical, social, and political issues can be found in the concept of privacy.

Using the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources, research the ethical, social, and political issues within an organization, and explain each of the issues.

Respond to the following:

  • What ethical, social, and political issues arise with the use of information systems?
  • Which of these identified issues can have the most adverse effect on an organization if not managed properly?

Explain the principal theories of leadership and motivation, and describe the fundamental considerations in managing and motivating individual and group behavior.

The 20th and 21st centuries have produced many business leaders, such as corporate giants like Jack Welch of GE, Daymond John of FUBU, Steve Jobs of Apple, and Herb Kelleher of Southwest. In addition, many hip-hop moguls have risen to prominence, such as Sean Combs, aka P Diddy, of Bad Boy Records; Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam; and Sean Carter, aka Jay Z, of Rock Nation.

Regardless of their business models and industries, organizational leaders are expected to create realistic visions for their companies and the people that they guide. However, such visions often result in vastly different leadership styles. Therefore, experts have concluded that there is no one best leadership style geared towards guiding employees and companies to accomplishing organizational goals.

Using the Internet and Strayer databases, research your favorite senior executive (CEO, CFO, COO, Director, President, Founder, etc.) from any organization that has made a strong impact on his or her industry (fashion, music, food, banking, technology, automotive, etc.).

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Describe the overall leadership style(s) of your chosen senior executive.
  2. Analyze the organizational structure and culture of the company your chosen executive has led, or is currently leading, and determine the company’s approach to human capital management and employee development. Next, explain whether or not you believe your chosen senior executive’s leadership approach has enhanced workplace productivity and the shared vision of the organization. Provide one to two (1-2) examples of your chosen senior executive’s actions to support your response.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of your selected leader’s performance, based on his or her ethical conduct and effective communication. Next, determine whether the chosen leader was successful in motivating and empowering his or her employees and gaining customer loyalty.
  4. Determine three (3) best practices that other organizational leaders can use in order to motivate employees and transform their company, based on practices that you believe made your chosen leader successful at his or her company and within his or her industry. Support your rationale with an explanation of the potential benefits that other business leaders may reap from your chosen best practices.
  5. Use at least five (5) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Discuss whether the elements of a contract are satisfied in this case.

Breach of Contract

Johnny, a neighbor who is not a merchant under the Uniform Commercial Code, offers to buy a car from Mark for $30,000.   Mark asks Johnny for some time to think about it. Johnny says sure. He writes on a piece of paper that he will keep the offer open for two weeks.

A week later Johnny sees another car he would rather buy. He purchases that, and then he tells Mark that he is revoking his offer.

Two days after that Mark said: “I’m sorry Johnny you made an offer in writing to buy my car. I’m going to hold you to that.”

Johnny replied: “Sorry I cannot do that.  But I will promise to pay you $10,000 for the help you gave me last year around the house.”   Somewhat mollified Mark accepts.

A week later and Johnny decided to renege on that promise as well.

Fed up. Mark sued Johnny for breach of contract on both the promise to buy the car and the promise for the $10,000.

  • Discuss whether the elements of a contract are satisfied in this case.

Describe your own example of an organizational goal and provide an operational plan to ensure the goal is met.

The Closed-Loop Business Performance management cycle consists of 4 phases: 1) strategize, 2) plan, 3) monitor and analyze, and 4) act and adjust.

In the planning phase, there is an operational plan. The operational plan is a set of tactics and initiatives. An operational plan is designed to ensure that the organizational goals and objectives are accomplished. An example is if an organization has the goal to improve employee retention. That organization may then provide a more detailed career path, training, team-building activities, and competitive salaries to achieve that goal.

For this discussion, describe your own example of an organizational goal and provide an operational plan to ensure the goal is met.
