The Course Project

In this week, you will continue to complete the tasks of the project topic selected in Week 1.

Topic 1: Disease Process

For a hypothetical patient who has the disease you selected, create a socioeconomic profile of your choice.

• What is the level of this patient’s income, education, work experience, and cultural influences?
• How might these socioeconomic factors influence his or her ability to access the necessary healthcare?
• How can the patient engage in self-care practices, such as modifying diet and exercise, and understand the nature of the illness, treatment, and prognosis?
• What healthcare services for this disease does the patient has access to?

Topic 2: Healthcare Profession

Identify the education and training of the healthcare professional you selected to study and answer the following:

• What is the interface between this profession and other healthcare providers?
• Who might their superior be in the healthcare network?
• Who might their peers be? Colleagues? Subordinates?
• What referral patterns might exist for this professional?

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 800–1,000 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

For this assignment, you will respond to the results of your team simulation round. What have you have identified as the key business issues that will impact your company? Respond to the results of your management area. What have you have identified as the key business issues that impacted your decisions in the simulation round? Prepare to discuss your decisions with the other members of your team.

As the Vice President of your product please address  these questions for the decisions you made in R&D:

• How well did you establish the specification of the products to meet customer demand?
• What level of quality and reliability—mean time between failure (MTBF)—did you build into your products?
• How did you ensure that the perceived age of the product meets customer demand?
• What new products did you create to meet the changing marketplace?

As the Vice President of your product please address  these questions for the decisions you made in Marketing:

• Explain your rationale for how you set the price of your products in the marketplace.
• What was your strategy around creating new products to meet the changing marketplace?
• How well did you build customer awareness through promotion?
• How effectively did you establish a sales force and distribution channels?
• What was your sales forecast strategy for your products?
• What was your rationale for your credit policies (accounts receivable and accounts payable)?

As the Vice President of your product please address  these questions for the decisions you made in Production:

• Did you purchase machinery to automate your facilities? If so, what was your rationale?
• Did you buy or sell capacity of product lines?
• How did you establish you production schedule for each line?
• How well did you manage the majority of the company’s fixed assets?
• Did you establish your workforce complement?

In conjunction with the COO, the Vice President will address these questions for the decisions you made in Finance:

• Did you acquire capital to fund capital expansions?
• Did you issue stock, short-term debt, or long-term bonds? If so, why?
• Did you issue a dividend to your shareholders? Explain your rationale whether your answer was yes or no.
• How well did you balance your debt portfolio? What was your strategy regarding the management of the pro forma statements?

•Review this week’s Learning Resources, and consider the factors that impact the validity and reliability of various assessment tools and diagnostic tests.

•Select one of the following assessment tools or diagnostic tests to explore for the purposes of this Discussion:

◦Mammogram

◦Physical tests for sore throat (inspecting the throat, palpating the head and neck lymph nodes, listening to breath sounds)

◦Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test

◦Dix-Hallpike test

◦Body-mass index (BMI) using waist circumference for adults

•Search the Walden Library and credible sources for resources explaining the tool or test you selected. What is its purpose, how is it conducted, and what information does it gather?

•Examine the literature and resources you located for information about the validity and reliability of the test or tool you selected. What issues with sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values are related to the test or tool?

•Are there any controversies or issues related to any of these tests or tools?

•Consider any ethical dilemmas that could arise by using these tests or tools.

Tools of Organizational Change

Select one of the following tools: the nine steps in Ackerman and Anderson’s roadmap for change, Cummings and Worley’s five dimensions of leading and managing change, or the three components of organizational change.  Explain how a leader could use this tool in guiding an organizational change.  Review several of your peers’ posts.  Respond to two peers who did not choose the same tool as you.  Discuss the similarities and differences between the tools.

Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length.  Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.

Changes at the Top

Using at least one resource from the Ashford University Library, or a reputable online source, explain what impact you think the loss of Steve Jobs has, and will have, on Apple’s primary stakeholder groups: customers, employees, and investors.  In what ways do you think Tim Cook’s leadership might change Apple?  Review several of your peers’ posts.  Discuss any similar or opposing perspectives you have, with at least two of your peers.  Take care to be professional and polite even if your beliefs or viewpoints differ.

Change Model Assignment.

Assume you are the Sales and Marketing Director for Sea Treasures, a small group of well-known retail stores specializing in exotic sea life and high-end accessories for aquariums.   The company has been in business for over 50 years, but the customer base is shrinking, sales are slow, and you are faced with reducing staff and closing stores.   Sea Treasures will be out of business within a year if innovative and creative changes are not made quickly.   After many months, you have finally been able to convince the owner that the only way to sustain the business and increase revenue is to create an Internet Website to sell the large inventory of aquarium decorator items (currently gathering dust in a costly warehouse) .  This will be a short-term, small scale change.  Six months later, you will expand the Website to sell live sea creatures such as tropical fish and small sea turtles online, which is a long-term, large-scale change.

You face many challenges in this transformational change initiative, beginning with strong employee resistance, new technology, and shipping methods.  Many small businesses have been faced with these same issues, and have made the transition successfully.  Consider the humble beginnings of Amazon, and look where they are today.  Selecting the best change model for this business, and implementing it step by step provides the foundation for creating an exciting new company.

In 3 – 5 pages, explain which change model you would follow for the short-term change and which you would follow for the long-term change.  Provide rationale for your decision and discuss the effects that these changes would have on the employees, managers, and executives within the organization.  Include at least three references and follow standard APA formatting for your paper.

In his landmark work Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, Sigmund Freud made a distinction between sexual object (who we are attracted to) and sexual aim (what we want to do with them), thereby making our current views on sexuality far too simplistic and forcing us to have a more complex vision of what it is to be sexual.*

IN the 1970s, in the Castro district of San Francisco, gay men developed a way of advertising their sexual desires (aims, as well as objects) and “the hanky code” was born.  Today is it used among multi-gender queer communities and sm communities as well as gay male communities.

*This is true for asexual beings as well.  For instance, on Freud’s view, once could be an aseuxal lesbian, or an asexual queer, or an asexual homosexual.  Granted there are other ways to think about asexuality — this is just one interesting view.

 

12.  For the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, go to the following website:  https://user.xmission.com/~trevin/hanky.html and learn aobut the hanky code.  Go over the various bandanas and their meanings.  Think about what YOU would flag if you were advertising your sexuality.  Are there things missing that you would have to make up?

13.  Write a reaction paper (#4) on your responses to the hanky code.  What is it like to think of sexuality in terms of aim (what you want to do) instead of object (who you want to do it with)?  What are your sexual aims?  Are they different with different objects?  Can you have one without the other?  Explore YOUR sexuality through aim and object in this paper.

Assignment 3: Defining Social Justice

Social justice has been defined in different ways, but the definitions usually include similar ideologies. As you study the concept of social justice, you will come across some of the following ideas:

• Historical inequities that affect current injustices should be corrected until the actual inequities no longer exist or have been perceptively “negated.”
• Wealth, power, and status should be redistributed for the good of the individual, the community, and the society.
• It is the responsibility of the government (or those who hold significant power) to ensure a basic quality of life for all its citizens.

From country to country social justice is defined in different ways, and the definitions usually include ideologies as well as differences. Research the definition of social justice in the United States using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Select another country to examine its definition of social justice in order to analyze the ideologies and similarities using the following steps:

1. Analyze the ideologies.
2. Identify the similarities.
3. Using your reasoning skills, give supporting statements or arguments that support your position(s) about the social justice.

Your comparing and contrasting must consider the following:

• Historical values and ideologies of the country
• Economic structure of the country
• Discrimination issues, if any exist

Develop a 2–3-page analysis of the definitions of social justice in the U.S. and a country of your choice. Analyze the ideologies, identify their similarities, and explain how these factors support your statements or arguments about the social justice you’ve selected.
