Read ¶6570 Student Loan Interest. Recently, there has been a debate that taxpayers should be able to deduct all, as opposed to a cap of $2,500, student loan interest in the same way that home owners are allowed to deduct all of the interest of a home mortgage.

 

In your initial response answer the following question:

 

1 – In your opinion should the deduction for student loan interest be capped or should taxpayers be able to deduct the entire amount? Why?

In the late 1760s and early 1770s (between the end of the Seven Years War and the beginning of the Revolution) you were upset with the imperial/colonial government.  It is now a quarter-century down the road from your youth, you are well into your middle-aged years, with idealistic children, and a grandchild or two, of your own.  You and your generation have sacrificed much to bring about the United States and its new government under the Constitution.  President George Washington’s Administration is in place, Congress has been elected, and the form of the new government is taking shape.  Are you satisfied with the new government under the recently ratified Constitution?  Do you think your 20-something year old self (the protester from the 1760s) would be happy with the way things turned out?  You have decided to write a treatise (a fancy word for an essay) upon this subject as a gift to your grandchildren.  In it you will think about your main social, political, and economic grievances from the 1760s in relation to your current beliefs.   Have things turned out well for you and your group?  Have your grievances from the 1760s been redressed (or are no longer relevant)?  Have new political, economic, or social issues replaced them for your socioeconomic group in the 1780s? Has your group met their social responsibilities to the new nation, have they compromised where needed for the greater good or selfishly looked after their own interests?  What, if anything, is left to be done for your group?   Most importantly, would your 1760s self believe that you held onto your ethics even as war raged around you; have you remained true to the ethical stands you took in the 1760s or have you grown more pragmatic with age and experience?

When operating internationally, companies incur a number of risks. Not only do they have to deal with their competitors, companies also must account for swings in demand and supply, as well as changes in interest rates and exchange rates. Therefore, hedging techniques are a vital tool for global companies.

Using the Internet, locate an annual report for a multinational corporation (e.g., Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, BP, etc.). Using the selected corporation’s annual report, analyze information about hedging and transaction exposure, economic exposure, and translation exposure.

Analyze the company’s hedging behavior. In a brief essay, 2–4 paragraphs in length, answer the following questions: Why is that company hedging? Against which exchange rate risks does it hedge?

Select a publicly traded corporation for which you would like to work or are currently working.

Research the corporation on its own Website, the public filings on the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), in the University’s online databases, and any other sources you can find. The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.

Write an eight to ten (9-10) page paper in which you:

1. Determine the impact of the company’s mission, vision, and primary stakeholders on its overall success.
2. Analyze the five (5) forces of competition to determine how they impact the company.
3. Create a SWOT analysis for the company to determine its major strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
4. Based on the SWOT analysis, outline a strategy for the company to capitalize on its strengths and opportunities, and minimize its weaknesses and threats.
5. Discuss the various levels and types of strategies the firm may use to maximize its competitiveness and profitability.

Overview:

Imagine that you work as the project manager for an IT department. Your organization has recently approved the development of a mobile application. As the project manager, you will manage the development of the project. The project will include user experience (UX) design by a consultant, graphic design by a team of two contracted designers, and in-house application development by a team of three (3) programmers and a database developer.

Deliverable 1: Summary (MS Word or open source equivalent)

Is love the ideal thing in any one’s life.

There are many ways to get a feel for the events of the 20th Century.  One way is through the analysis of primary source documents.  Few documents set the stage for the second half than Winston Churchill’s 1946 speech in Fulton, Missouri.  Officially entitled “The Sinews of Peace”, it came to be known as “The Iron Curtain Speech”, in which Churchill laid out the challenges for the West in general, and the US and Britain in particular, regarding what would soon be known as the Cold War.  Your assignment this week is to not just read Churchill’s speech, but read between the lines to answer the following questions in a well written 2-3 page document:

1. Churchill believes the Soviet Union “desires the fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines.”  How might those expansionist desires challenge the Western principle of national political self determination, a cause it championed during World War 2?
2. Churchill’s speech acknowledges “Russia’s need to be secure on her western borders,” but at the same time it raises concerns about Soviet actions in Eastern Europe.  Is Churchill being inconsistent? Or does he provide concrete justifications for those concerns?
3. In his speech, Churchill asserts “There is nothing they (the Russians) admire so much as strength, and nothing for which they have less respect for than military weakness.” If he isn’t advocating a direct military confrontation with the Soviet Union, then what is he saying?
4. Churchill delivered this speech to an American audience, but after reading it one might conclude it could have been given in any western country.  Why did he pick the US?
