Assignment 3: Views on Diversity

Pablo believes that diversity is the most important issue in our culture, and that it is greatly underemphasized. On the other hand, Ralph rarely thinks of diversity, except when it is mentioned in the workplace. Monica is sensitized to multicultural issues because her parents are immigrants who still struggle with discrimination after being here for 20 years.

To obtain a cross-section of what people think about diversity, conduct five-minute interviews with three individuals you don’t know well, and assess their views on diversity. You have been provided an Informed Consent document for the respondents to sign along with verbally consenting to participate in this assignment. This is to enable that the respondents demonstrate a clear understanding of the meaning and purpose of this assignment. While you are expected to use the informed consent form in keeping with ethical practices for data collection, you do not need to submit it to the instructor as part of the assignment.

Ask the respondents the following questions and record their answers:

• When you hear the word diversity mentioned in the workplace, in the media, or in casual conversation, what meaning do you assign this term?
• Does a particular race, ethnic group, or other minority group come to mind when you think of diversity? Does one of these groups pertain to you?
• Do you think the majority of people in our culture:

• • Respect cultural differences among groups of people.
  • Show indifference to cultural differences.
  • Lack respect for cultural differences. Explain each choice.

• If you were to make a suggestion about how our culture should handle diversity over the next decade, what would it be?

Compile your responses and write a brief reflection paper (two pages) on your findings. Specifically address the following issues:

• What did you discover was the general attitude toward diversity in our culture?
• Is diversity more associated with one race, ethnic, or other minority group than with others? If so, explain why this might be the case.
• Compare and contrast the respondent’s views with your own. How would you answer the same questions?

You will select a company from this list, and you will analyze the company’s financial performance, highlighting accounting principles and methods learned in this course. This project requires you to present, review, and analyze the organization’s published annual reports and related footnotes for the last 2 years. Specifically, your paper will cover the following:

• Discuss methods used to account for assets, liabilities, and shareholder equity, and explain how the company’s inventory valuation method affects reported results.
• Explain the company’s approach to internal controls, and assess its compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.

Submitting your assignment in APA format means, at a minimum, you will need the following:

• Title page: Remember the running head and title in all capital letters.
• Body: The body of your paper begins on the page following the title page and it must be double-spaced between paragraphs. The typeface should be 12-pt. Times Roman or 12-pt. Courier in regular black type. Do not use color, bold type, or italics except as required for APA level headings and references. The deliverable length of the body of your paper for this assignment is 5–6 pages. In-text academic citations to support your decisions and analysis are required. A variety of academic sources is encouraged.
• Reference page: References that align with your in-text academic sources are listed on the final page of your paper. Your assignment is to report on TWO “cultural experience” visits you make during this term. After each visit, write a 500-800 word report about the visit and what you learned.

Write a report after each cultural experience (Cultural Experience Report #1 and #2).

Each report should include the following information. Include photos or links that help convey the information. As always, be sure to document all sources you consult in preparing your work.

Name and location of the museum, site, or performance event. If there is on-line information about the site or performance, include a link.
Type of museum, site or event. For example, is it a portrait museum, a poetry slam, an outdoor Shakespeare festival performance? If you attended a performance, name the performer or the piece. Be specific about what you attended, when, and where.
Briefly describe the general setting.
Describe at least one aspect of the experience that you found especially interesting. For example, you might write about a particular work of art, cultural artifact, song, dance section, scene in a play, costumes or lighting, a particular actor or vocalist, etc. Explain what impressed you, and why. Your reaction can be positive or negative, as long as you offer an explanation.
Identify and use at least two things you’ve learned in class in your essay. For example, if you visit a museum, you might point out the architectural style, discuss an artist you’ve learned about in the course, or tie your experience to a class discussion.
Reflect on the relevance–if any–of your experience to your everyday life. How did the experience engage your feelings or emotions, if at all? What does this tell you about human culture, or about yourself?

Write paper of 700- to 1,050-words in which you analyze the sexual harassment issues presented in scenario.

• Analyze each of the elements of this case: the applicable defenses and the basis for the court’s ruling.
• Analyze the possible liability in this case if the sexual harasser(s) were an independent contractor versus an employee.

Cite to at least three peer-reviewed sources.

In this course, you have been introduced to ethics, social problems, and social policy. This assignment will prompt action from you to help resolve a social issue. You must learn about a problem, find a piece of legislation addressing your concern, and act to help solve the problem.

Using the textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, do the following:

1. Identify the Problem

Select and research a social issue based on the course readings or personal interest.

Then, address the following:

• Define and describe the social issue in detail using a variety of relevant outside sources.
• Explain the social context of the social issue.
• Identify and describe ethical concerns related to the social issue.
• Determine what population is most impacted by the social issue.

2. Find the Legislation

Use credible government sources to find and learn about a piece of legislation related to your chosen social problem or issue.

Then, address the following:

• Explain how the piece of current legislation relates to the social problem or issue. Make sure you provide a description of the piece of legislation.

3. Write an Advocacy Letter

In order to help resolve the social issue, you must take action. Identify your elected representative(s) and find their contact and e-mail addresses.

The purpose of an advocacy letter is to support or oppose the legislation that affects a social issue of concern to you. This letter is a way for representatives to stay in touch with the constituents they represent. Be sure to address the following in your letter:

• Explain the importance of the legislation as it relates to your issue.
• Advocate for or against the legislation in a knowledgeable and respectful tone. This includes the following:

Write a 3–5-page report in Word format that begins with an Advocacy Letter followed by a supporting report of 3–5-pages. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention:

Develop an entire home network with a budget of $5,000.00. Your configuration must assume the purchase of associated hardware for access to both wireless and wired connections and a broadband connection. Human beings often place blame on people and forces outside of themselves. “Ever since I was fired from my job, I have experienced high levels of anxiety.” “My parent’s divorce caused me to abuse drugs at an early age.” In both of these statements, the blame is given to an external force. Humanistic and existential counselors ask clients to look internally to explore the meaning in these situations. By employing interventions that focus on growth, acceptance, and self-awareness, counselors address the root cause of a client’s problems. In addition, focusing on the person and not the disease or addiction can empower clients to take responsibility for their choices and their lives.

In this Discussion, you use this week’s media to continue your exploration of humanistic and existential theories.  In addition, you select one presentation that depicts a theory that resonates with you the most. Watch your selected media in its entirety, carefully observing the interactions of both the client and the counselor.  Then, imagine you had not known the counselor’s theoretical approach before accessing the media. Without this knowledge, how might you use his or her actions or interventions to identify the theory that he or she is applying?

When developing your Discussion post, support your ideas by providing references to specific examples from the video. In addition, cite the video frame (e.g. 8.32 minutes) that the action or intervention occurred. You do not need to summarize the demonstration itself, as your instructor and many of your colleagues have also viewed it. Instead, provide insight into the interventions used and major constructs of the theory.

Post by Day 3 a brief description of the video you selected and the theoretical approach used. Explain how this theory resonates with you. Then, describe the counselor’s specific interventions that would indicate his/her theoretical approach and explain how effectively they demonstrated the approach. Finally, share one insight you gained from watching the counselor in the media.

Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues using one or more of the following approaches:

• Identify colleagues who selected a different theory than you. Critically appraise your colleagues’ critique of the counselor’s actions.
• Provide insight into how another humanistic/existential theory could have been used to address this client.
