The opponent-process theory suggests that we often experience emotions in opposing pairs such as fear and relief or pleasure and pain. When we experience one end of the spectrum, the other end is temporarily suppressed and thus we rarely experience the two at the same time. However, there are times when we experience both emotions before the first emotion fades. When this happens, the experience can be uncomfortable or even strangely enjoyable.

A good example of this process is skydiving, which was the basis of the primary research into this theory. When a person skydives for the very first time, the jump elicits high levels of fear and relatively low levels of pleasure, even upon landing. However, as the skydiver gains more experience, the level of fear decreases while pleasure increases. Often, the skydiver feels both at the same time, resulting in high levels of excitement.

Another example is shopping and the guilt that often follows. For example, a woman finds a new dress that she loves but not having the money, she charges the new dress. She immediately feels excitement and pleasure with her new purchase. However, soon after getting home, she begins to feel guilt for charging a dress that she wanted, but did not really need.

Conduct research using the Internet regarding the differences in culture, management styles, and communication strategies between the U.S. and Cambodia. For this last essay the theme is ethics. In 2 to 4 pages discuss your view on what constitutes ethical behavior. You are free to use any of the readings we’ve done in the last part of the semester to serve as a context for your discussion (Kant’s Grounding, Camus’ The Stranger, and Sartre’s Respectable Prostitute and The Flies). You may present a criticism of the philosophical view you are addressing or explain how you’ve appropriated elements of that view. On the other hand you may focus mainly on developing and presenting your own views. Assignment 2: Influence of the Unconscious

The discovery of the unconscious is typically attributed to Freud even though it has roots long before Freud was born. Freud was, however, influential in popularizing the unconscious. Freud and his followers maintained that much of what influences us is unconscious. The better we are able to discover these influences, the more we are able to moderate or change these influences in our behavior, thoughts, and emotions.

What implications does this have for morals and ethics?
Address the issue of responsibility — for example, what implications does this have for acting-out or criminal behavior?
What was Freud’s view of human nature?
What role would this play in understanding the importance of therapy?
How would Freud or a psychodynamic thinker evaluate the effectiveness of therapy?

Two three paged essays on two topics listed below. The paper should be very well written and provide great attention to detail and the topics at hand. It is important that you follow the assigments to the T and all components of each questions are answered in a thorough manner. I also want to be notfied which topics you are planning on choosing before you go forward with the assignment. It should not contain outrageous vocabulary words to try and impress but instead should focus on answering the questions to the best possible potential. In addition, the page requirement do not include a title page and one is not necessary for this assignment. In addition paragraphs should be written with atleast 6-8 sentences per paragraph and not be indented every two lines to fill space. This is a very important assignment and holds big weight in the class and shoukd completed wth the utmost care.

1. How has the status on women changed in the post 1945 world? You may discuss individual countries or regions. You might want to consider how economic circumstances, government policy or cultural, religious trends have affected the status of women.

 

2. Has globalization been good or bad for the post 1945 (and you may want to begin in the 1980’s) world?  It would probably be better to discuss only briefly the general pros and cons, and focus more on a few selected areas or countries.

 

3. What are the successes and failures of United States foreign policy since World War II? Why did these successes or failures occur.  You may want to limit your answer to a few test cases.

 

4. The post-1945 world saw the eventual triumph of neoliberalism, i.e. radical free market economy policy in several countries beginning in the late 1970’s.  Discuss several case studies where this new policy produced beneficial or negative outcomes.

 

5. How has the post-1945 world dealt with inequality between national and regional economies? Were specific strategies implemented or deal with this problem and were they successful. Were general economic trends working to worsen or ameliorate this problem.
