Evaluate and revise an ethics program to increase ethical behavior within an organizational environment.

One of the most beneficial exercises in a course exploring ethics is to develop a paper that allows you the opportunity to create connections between your personal view of ethics and the theory under discussion. The nature of ethical decision making encompasses recognition, analysis and resolution.  We often don’t make a decision because it’s ethical, but rather, because it makes sense from our personal view of the situation.  That is, ethical decisions happen “after the fact” as we begin to see the actual implications of the decision.

With this in mind, your paper should explore current ethical issues in the workplace that are relevant to your current career or the career that you are preparing to pursue. Your task is to begin to explore the possible issues within your workplace and choose one to focus on throughout the course as you begin to build your final paper. Please consider the following as possible approaches for this final paper:

  • Illustrate the impact of organizational goals and objectives, structure, culture, environment, ethics policies, and incentive systems on ethical behavior within an organization
  • Evaluate and revise an ethics program to increase ethical behavior within an organizational environment.
  • Create and systematically apply a defensible ethical moral framework to a contemporary ethics issue. To systematically apply the ethical moral framework, you must use the framework consistently as you describe the ethics issue. Explore the issue using the framework you create. HINT: This is done through the application of one of the theories we have read about in this module.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Employment issues (sexual harassment, diversity, discrimination, etc.)
  • Performance appraisal and compensation
  • Terminations
  • Privacy
  • Financial and accounting measures
  • Using reward systems to enhance ethical behavior and/or reinforce unethical behavior
  • Communicating ethics
  • Corporate social responsibility

Your final paper will be developed in four parts (topic, outline, draft, and final paper) throughout the course.

This activity is the first step in developing a final paper for this course.  From the list of possible topics, explore the possible issues within your workplace and choose one to focus on throughout the course as you begin to build your final paper. Make sure you spend time researching your topic before submission of this part; you need to know if there is sufficient information available for you to write a paper on the topic. Using MS Word, create a one-page document that describes your “topic and thesis sentence” for your Individual Research Project.  Use the following information to help you identify your topic:

The topic of your project is a statement about the primary focus of your paper. This provides an overview of what you will explore.  Your thesis, or topic sentence(s), tells the reader what your essay will discuss, explore, explain, argue, etc. This sentence(s) should provide a clear and concise statement about the point of your paper to help narrow the focus from the broader topic.

Discuss how a physician would manage patient access to care and contrast this with how an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) manages patient access to care.

Managing patient access has become both expensive and problematic. Discuss how a physician would manage patient access to care and contrast this with how an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) manages patient access to care. Discuss the pros and cons of each. Clearly outline the type of restrictions and limits of the new ACO paradigm.

Rely on peer-reviewed journals, the Federal Register, and the Library of Congress for your research and incorporate at least one new law or regulation (from the last twenty-four months) that addresses this issue.

Discuss some of the other attributes beyond analytical thinking and writing skills that many employers value.

Employers of both accounting and IS personnel often rank “analytical reasoning” and “writing” skills on the same priority as technical skills, and some rank them even higher. Said one recruiter at the school of one author: “I can train new employees to use our computer systems and perform the majority of the technical tasks we will require of them. What I cannot train them to do is to think analytically or logically. And what I refuse to do is to teach them to speak and write clearly and effectively—skills they should have learned in high school.” Another recruiter said it slightly differently: “Give me a technically-competent accounting or IS student who can perform AIS tasks well, and I will pay them X dollars. Give me a student who can explain to my clients how our services can solve their business problems and I will pay them 2X dollars.”

Conduct a preliminary search and:

  • Discuss some of the other attributes beyond analytical thinking and writing skills that many employers value.
  • Why must we have knowledge of computerized or traditional system’s objectives to study that system?
  • Do roles that accountants play differ in traditional systems from their roles in computerized systems? Please discuss.

What ethical principles (from consequentialism, deontology, and virtue theories, for example) would come into play in this situation?Explain.

As a criminal justice professional, how would you act if you are confronted by your supervisor and asked to do something that was morally against your principles? give an example of a situation in the criminal justice field in which a moral or ethical dilemma could be presented to you. For this example, discuss the following:

  • How you would approach the situation?
  • What steps or actions would you or should you take?
  • What are potential positive and negative consequences for various actions taken or not taken?
  • What ethical principles (from consequentialism, deontology, and virtue theories, for example) would come into play in this situation?

Identify the key tenets of ethical research used when evaluating criminal justice data and interpreting published research findings.

Background info: Throughout the years, scientists have engaged in an array of ethically questionable research endeavors possessing dubious scientific value or validity. From the Nazi experimental trials to Stanley Milgram to the Tuskegee experiments, scientists have engaged in ethically unsound research in the name of progress or curiosity. The intelligentsia knew they could but failed to ask whether they should.

Identify the key tenets of ethical research used when evaluating criminal justice data and interpreting published research findings. Examine the principles that define ethical research in the field of criminal justice.

Background info: Research serves as a guide by which to study, describe, and quantify an array of social and physical phenomenon. Theory, which is best described as a set of propositions or hypotheses that specify the relationship among a subset of variables, serves as a way of offering an intellectualized general commentary on that which is observed.

How does theory inform a research study? How can a generalized theory remain timely enough to be applicable to new or innovative studies?

Discuss the Patriot Act I and II: What was the effect of this legislation? How did it impact the war on drugs efforts?

After the events of September 11, 2001, the war on terrorism became a much greater priority than the war on drugs. The USA Patriot Act was quickly legislated: it included some elements relating to drug enforcement. Discuss the Patriot Act I and II: What was the effect of this legislation? How did it impact the war on drugs efforts? What evidence can you find to suggest the Patriot Act is helping our war on drugs efforts, or conversely, having no impact at all?

How does the choice of approach (based on theory) impact the decisions made by organizational leaders?Explain.

Ethics are often summed up in what is considered the “golden rule”: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. However, is the golden rule the same when applied to the business arena? Does this statement assume that the moral foundation of all people is the same? Is this a wise assumption?

Considering what you have read and reviewed thus far, investigate some of the unethical business practices that have been brought to light in the mainstream media. A few examples include the Bernie Madoff scandal, Enron, Martha Stewart, the financial meltdown of 2008, and so forth. Do not use one of these as the basis for your discussion. Instead, use your research skills and personal knowledge of media to explore articles through the library’s search engine.

  • Find an article about a contemporary business ethics issue.
  • Choose the most applicable ethics theory and apply to the issue described in the article.
  • What do you see as critical to a strong solution that this theory ignores?
  • How does the choice of approach (based on theory) impact the decisions made by organizational leaders?

Describe the principles/concepts which can be applied to explain the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the development and maintenance of superstitions.

Many people believe that superstitions are absolutely true. This often causes them to believe and act in ways that are out of the norm either to avoid a negative outcome or to bring about a positive outcome. However, the origins of all superstitions lie in operant conditioning (for example, wearing the same shirt worn during a victory game to all future games in order to ensure victory).

In this assignment, you will examine the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the formation of a superstition.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the development of operant conditioning and its basic principles. Then, address the following:

Describe the historical antecedents of operant conditioning. What factors led to the rise of operant conditioning?
Describe the principles/concepts which can be applied to explain the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the development and maintenance of superstitions.
Brainstorm to come up with a number of superstitions you may have heard or read about. Using your knowledge and vocabulary of operant conditioning, choose one of these superstitions. Then, describe in detail, the thinking processes involved that resulted in the acquisition and perpetuation of this irrational belief.
Describe a specific aspect of the operant conditioning process that leads to these beliefs becoming so deeply ingrained and long standing in nature.
Explain whether a person can ever be rid of superstitions. What methods can be used to help such a person?
Interview a family member or friend to discover a superstition that he or she believes in. Explain the nature of the event that led to the formation of this superstition. Does this information fit with your understanding of how the operant conditioning process results in the development of superstitions? Why or why not?
