LP10 Assignment: ABC Sporting Goods

ABC Sporting Goods

Examining the asking price of a business includes reviewing all past records and assessing the future financial outlook for the business, the economy, and the industry. You are buying the future not the past.

Critical Assumptions for ABC Sporting Goods:

  • ABC Sporting Goods is a small business, operating as a corporation.
  • ABC has been in business for 15 years.
  • The owner draws a salary listed under officers’ compensation.
  • The store has been in the same location for the past seven years and has a Triple Net Lease (i.e. pay real estate taxes, building insurance, and maintenance).
  • Sales decreased slightly in the past two years, but the company has tried to maintain market share by lowering their prices. This has impacted both gross and net profit.
  • The owner wishes to sell his business and retire. The stress of running the business for the last 15 years, for 10 or 12 hours a day has begun to impact his health.
  • The owner feels that the business has a good reputation with many loyal customers.
  • He believes the business should be valued at $750,000.

Review attached spreadsheet for Financial Information on ABC Sporting Goods: Profit & Loss

Directions:

Part I. Complete the following ratio analysis for ABC sporting Goods.

Utilize:  BizStats at http://www.BizStats.com

Go to Industry Financials on the Blue Navigation Bar

Select – Corporations 249 not Sole Proprietorships 141

Select Retail Trade

Select Sporting good – Hobby book – Music

Calculate the following ratios: (Based on the last 3 year average)

  • Return on sales (net profit divided by gross revenues)
  • Return on assets
  • Return on net worth
  • Quick ratio
  • Current ratio
  • Inventory turnover (gross sales divided by inventory)
  • Assets to sales ratio
  • Total liabilities to net worth

Compare these ratios to those found in BizStats. Comment on any differences and how they impact the value of the business. Identify any significant trends in the business.

Part II. Estimate the business value using BizStats – Valuation Rule for Sporting Goods Stores at BizStats.

Under reports/valuation/valuation-rule-thumb.php

Adjust the business valuation based on your completed calculation and the ratio and trend analysis performed in step I.

Part III. Calculate the viability of purchasing the business based on the following parameters:

You can finance the business for 20% down with an interest rate of 5%, amortization over 20 years. Use the following formula:

Purchase price $100,000, down payment 20% or $20,000 which results in $80,000 being financed.

For $1,000 financed at 5%, the factor to calculate your monthly payment is .66x for every $100 borrowed. That equals $66/month or $792/year.

We now can calculate the free cash flow available to pay the loan amount. We can use the following formula:

Net Profit

+interest paid (use previous years amount from P&L)

+Depreciation and amortization

= Cash flow

For example, if we have $10,000 for our cash flow and our payments are $528 x 12 months = $6,336; then to calculate our DSC or debt service coverage ratio, we divide the Cash flow by the annual debt service or $10,000 / $6,336 =1.58x. If we borrowed $400,000 our monthly payment is $2,640 or $31,680 and if our cash flow is $100,000 then the DSC is 3.16x. Anything greater than 1.20 is considered to be adequate. Comment on the result.

evaluate the effectiveness of any hearing protection provided to employees.

As part of the Hearing Conservation Program, the employer is required to evaluate the effectiveness of any hearing protection provided to employees. Hearing protectors are rated using a system developed by the EPA, the noise reduction rating (NRR). The NRR is derived in a laboratory setting. There is some controversy about how accurate the NRR is. OSHA’s method for evaluating the effectiveness of hearing protection includes subtracting seven from the NRR to account for real world versus laboratory setting.

For OSHA compliance officers, OSHA divides the result in half before subtracting from the exposure level to account for individual improperly inserting the hearing protection. OSHA does not currently require employers to divide the result in half. Which method of evaluation of hearing protection devices do you believe employers should be required to use and why? Do you believe there is a better way to evaluate hearing protection devices? Please explain your response.

Resiliency Model: Define and explain risk factors and protective factors as they relate to drug use and abuse; what “pros” do you see in this model?

M2D2 Risk and Protective Factors

Prevention and Intervention models based on risk and protective factors are growing in popularity. You will often hear them referred to as the “Resiliency Model” or the “Asset Model”. Define and explain risk factors and protective factors as they relate to drug use and abuse; what “pros” do you see in this model? What “cons”? In other words, if you were designing a new program, would this model be useful to you? Explain why or why not.

As you ponder your response, you may find it helpful or interesting to review the list of 40 “protective factors” identified by the Search Institute that was mentioned in your text as well as the SAMHSA Fact Sheet, particularly pages 4-7 for a simple but clear explanation of risk and protective factors.

Analyze a recent conversation you had with a person of a different culture.

Assignment 3: Communication: Culture and Context

In this assignment, you will consider the effect of culture and context on communication. There are many definitions of culture, but most include a reference to shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and effective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization. These shared patterns identify the members of a cultural group while also distinguishing those of another group. Culture is about symbols and language, and these elements are central to communication. The idea of something being “lost in translation” is readily apparent to most people who have studied another language and translated a passage into their own primary language. The rate of speech and importance of nonverbal aspects of communication are just a few ways culture can impact the message sent. The importance of context always varies by culture—for example, in some cultures, what is said is much more important than how it is said while in other cultures the “how” may carry much greater importance.

Tasks:

Using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, complete the following:

Analyze a recent conversation you had with a person of a different culture. Or, if you haven’t had this type of conversation recently, find a video clip online that focuses on people from different cultures communicating and analyze the clip.
Provide a brief synopsis of the conversation—what was the general content and context?
Describe how you greeted this person. Did you greet this person with a kiss, a handshake, or some other cultural mannerism? Was there additional touching or no touching at all?
Describe your physical proximity. How far were you standing from each other? What if any body language was evident? Did you maintain eye contact?
Describe the physical characteristics that might be evident. What were you wearing? Were you dressed in casuals or in business attire? Describe what the other person was wearing. How might the apparel make a difference in the conversation?
Describe the protocol for the conversation. Did you take turns talking, or did you both talk at the same time? How did you refer to each other? Do you feel like you had equal time to express yourself? Why or why not?
Did the physical setting impact what was discussed? What did you talk about? How was the conversation brought to a close? What happened at the end?
How might your own cultural affiliation have impacted this conversation? Do an analysis using support from scholarly sources.

Submission Details:

Is it a reasonable and socially responsible practice to offer international assistance in exchange for an opportunity to shape a country’s political and/or social system? Why or why not?Explain.

There are multifaceted ethical issues relating to international investments. One aspect relates to human rights. Most Latin American governments have constitutions that mandate health care as a human right, yet some of these countries provide poor health care for the majority of their population.

During the 1980s, the general populace of these countries deteriorated, even though several Latin American countries developed strategies to reposition medical personnel and services to rural areas. Throughout this time, many international donors provided assistance; however they did so with imposed conditions. An example of this constrained assistance was the World Bank, which imposed restrictions that included privatization of health care, as well as required limitations on universal access.

Did the World Bank and other international donors act responsibly and ethically in constraining their humanitarian assistance? Who has the responsibility for the health care of the Latin American people?

Explain the importance of situating a society’s cultural and artistic expressions within a historical context.

Assignment 1: Essay – Exploring Ancient Mysteries

Due Week 2 and worth 100 points

Choose one (1) of the topics below and develop a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (of at least 250-500 words) which adequately address the topic you have chosen.

Topic Choices

  • There have been many theories regarding how the pyramids at Giza were constructed. Most experts agree that they were constructed as burial monuments for pharaohs, but “how” these ancient people constructed monuments of such great size without modern machinery is a mystery which is still being debated.
  • No one can say for certain what happened to the great urban Mayan civilization, but theories abound and include varied possible alternatives to explain the relatively abrupt and mysterious disappearance of the Mayan civilization.
  • Tutankhamen died young, at approximately eighteen (18) years of age. However, his cause of death has been the subject of quite varied scholarly theories and conclusions. Did he die of an injury, of illness, of murder, or something else?.
  • Minoan Crete was a major civilization in its time, but several theories have been advanced to explain its demise, including speculations associating it with mythical Atlantis. What were the causes of Minoan Civilization’s decline?
  • Great Zimbabwe is an enormous complex of structures in East Africa. Since the builders and occupants left no written records, several theories have developed as to the identity of its builders and the functions of the structures. Which theory makes the most sense?
  • The monumental size and complexity of the Tomb of Shihuangdi is astounding, yet its location and construction details were to be kept secret. What was the emperor’s purpose for such an elaborate, secret burial place?
  • Other topic choice recommended and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.

Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph paper in which you:

  1. Clearly state the “mystery” and provide a brief summary of at least two (2) reasonable and scholarly theories which could explain the mystery. Because some theories may sound far-fetched, include the source or promoter of each theory – such as a scientist, a historian, a theologian, etc.
  2. After summarizing at least two (2) scholarly theories, identify one (1) of the theories as the most plausible and provide at least two (2) convincing reasons why the theory you have chosen is the best one to explain the mystery. This will involve some critical reasoning skills on your part.
  3. Use at least two (2) sources plus the class textbook. (Three [3] sources total as the minimum) Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.
