Identify key concepts that you could use to improve a workflow in your own organization and consider how you could use them.

As you explored last week, the implementation of a new technology can dramatically affect the workflow of an organization. Newly implemented technologies can initially limit the productivity of users as they adjust to their new tools. Such implementations tend to be so significant that they often require workflows to be redesigned in order to achieve improvements in safety and patient outcomes. However, before workflows can be redesigned, they must first be analyzed. This analysis includes each step in completing a certain process. Some systems duplicate efforts or contain unnecessary steps that waste time and money and could even jeopardize patient health care. By reviewing and modifying the workflow, you enable greater productivity. This drive to implement new technologies has elevated the demand for nurses who can perform workflow analysis.

In this Discussion you explore resources that have been designed to help guide you through the process of workflow assessment.

To prepare:

  • Take a few minutes and peruse the information found in the article “Workflow Assessment for Health IT Toolkit” listed in this week’s Learning Resources.
    • As you check out the information located on the different tabs, identify key concepts that you could use to improve a workflow in your own organization and consider how you could use them.
    • Go the Research tab and identify and read one article that is of interest to you and relates to your specialty area.

Post on or before Day 3 a summary of three different concepts you found in “Workflow Assessment for Health IT Toolkit” that would help in redesigning a workflow in the organization in which you work (or one with which you are familiar) and describe how you would apply them. Next, summarize the article you selected and assess how you could use the information to improve workflow within your organization. Finally, evaluate the importance of monitoring the effect of technology on workflow.

Please include headings 1)Tools to Assist in Redesigning Workflow (Flowcharts, interviews and usability evaluations are three tools that can be utilized to analyze workflows), 2) Article Summary ( Using qualitative studies to improve the usability of an EMRUsing qualitative studies to improve the usability of an EMR ),    3) Improving Workflow Within My Organization & Monitoring Effects of Technology on Workflow (I work in a hospital).

Critically discuss this website and then select a second website pertaining to your topic and critically discuss and analyze the information there.

Your assignment is to choose a topic from Chapter 12, Defining Psychological Disorders, in your e-textbook. Your paper should be from 1,200- 1,500 words (or about 5 double-spaced typed pages), and you should follow APA style.  Please adhere to page length requirement.

First discuss your topic using information from the textbook.  Provide a brief overview of your topic.

Choose at least two Web sites that contain information about the topic. Both sites need to be credible and one site should represent a national organization that has formed because of the topic. For example, if you choose depression as a topic, then you could choose any national organization devoted to researching and/or providing information about depression. Critically discuss this website and then select a second website pertaining to your topic and critically discuss and analyze the information there.  What can be found at these websites?  Was the information useful?  Who could benefit from this information, etc.

Next, choose two journal articles from credible sources, using one of the psychological databases to find more in-depth information than what is listed in your textbook about your topic. These articles should be research-oriented, i.e., involve a research study. As such, the study will have participants, procedures (or methods), and results. Wikipedia, Psychology Today, or other such sources  will not count as credit for one of your research articles. They must be from from a credible psychological journal.

When composing your paper, first select a title that is indicative of your paper.  Then, begin with an introduction telling the reader the purpose of the paper and what you will review (i.e., the topic, two websites and two research articles). Next, discuss how the topic is presented in the textbook and why you chose it as your topic of interest (keep in mind that you should avoid being too personally revealing in discussing your topic). Then spend most of your paper writing about the information you discovered in your research (from the two websites and the two journal articles).  End your paper with a concluding paragraph that tells the reader what they should know from reading your paper and the importance of this information.

Make sure your paper flows logically and is not a patchwork of bits and pieces of information.

Explain how work groups are utilized in your organization to accomplish the stated goals of the company.

Many companies find they are forced to remodel their traditional hierarchical structures, which were originally built around functional specialization and centralized authority, to compete in today’s marketplace. Companies often draw on the following five tools of organizational design to make their organizations leaner, flatter, and more responsive to change. The five tools are:

  • Empower managers and workers
  • Reengineer work processes
  • Implementing self-directed work teams
  • Rapid incorporation of Internet technology applications
  • Networking with outsiders to improve existing capabilities and create new ones

In addition, there are many managerial tasks that shape corporate culture and the leadership skills needed to engage the full organization to produce great results. Examine the dynamics of the elements that must be brought together to create a corporate culture, such as core values and business principles, operating practices and behaviors, ethical standards and attitudes, and work climate and people management practices.

Considering the five tools of organizational design, managerial tasks and leadership skills, examine the practices followed by your selected organization and include the following in a 8–10 page APA formatted paper in MS Word:

Describe which of the five tools of organizational design your selected organization uses to maintain and improve productivity while achieving cost savings. Use detailed examples in your response.

Explain how work groups are utilized in your organization to accomplish the stated goals of the company.

Describe the motivational practices used by the organization to promote better strategy execution. Include some illustrative examples in your response.

Explain how, if at all, the reward system in the organization ties incentives directly to achieving higher productivity and performance targets.

Explain the evaluation and feedback process used in your company to assess employee performance.

Identify the elements in the organization that affect how cultural change is implemented.

Describe the ethical model being used by the company.

Present your overall opinion of the organization’s corporate strategy approach. Is the strategy execution effort delivering the expected results? Explain and illustrate your conclusions.

Describe what specific actions have been taken to delegate authority to middle and junior managers and to create a sense of empowerment among employees. Explain and illustrate your answers.

Avoid plagiarism: Using someone else’s words or ideas in your paper without proper acknowledgement constitutes plagiarism and is unacceptable in any situation. Make sure you have properly documented the source of original facts, ideas, and interpretations that you use in your paper. This must be done whether you summarize information or paraphrase what you learned from a particular source.

Describe a situation where you faced or exhibited resistance to change.

ORG-04 (Discussions and two responses)
1. If you assume that change is necessary in order for firms to stay competitive, which is preferred planned or reactive change? Give examples of each which illustrate the benefits of each type of approach.

2. Describe a situation where you faced or exhibited resistance to change. What specific tactics and approaches from the chapter on change would have helped overcome this resistance?

3. How do selective perception and stereotypes affect decision making in organizations? Are they harmful? If so how?

4. Take The Big Five Test self-survey and watch Napoleon Hill’s video on A Pleasing Personality. Now consider the Big 5 traits. Describe a person whom you think was “difficult” or “unpleasant.” How would you rate them in terms of the big 5?

ORG-05 Discussion (Two responses)

1. Watch the video on Bandura’s Efficacy Theory. How does self image and past performance affect how one tries new tasks in the future?

2. Read the The Cure for Horrible Bosses article by Rosabeth Moss Kanter from the Harvard Business Publishing link.
• Have you ever had bosses like that?
• How did you deal with them and what could you have done better based on what you have learned in this course?

3. Consider the situational leadership theories presented and give an example of a manager whose style was NOT appropriate for the situation. What were the impacts of this on you?

Compare/contrast Cartesian rationalism and at least one version of empiricism.

Assignment 2: The Mind/Body Problem

After completing the readings for this week, draft a 6–8-page paper. This assignment will be completed in three parts, so you may want to use section headers to organize your paper. Remember to explain the theories you reference with supporting citations to the textbook and online lectures before contrasting them, utilizing correct APA format. You may want to use examples to illustrate your understanding of key ideas in each theory. Use this APA Citation Helper as a convenient reference for properly citing resources.

  1. Address the following in your paper: Mind/Body Dualism: Compare/contrast Cartesian rationalism and at least one version of empiricism. You may draw upon your analysis of the Cartesian Method in this week’s discussion assignment. Remember to explain the key ideas associated with each theory. Be specific as to which version of empiricism is the focus of your analysis. (2–3 pages)
  2. Responses to the Mind/Body Problem: Compare/contrast Kantian Idealism and Phenomenology and explain how each attempts to respond to/resolve the mind/body problem encountered both by empiricists and rationalists. (2–3 pages)
  3. Evaluate and Respond: Once you have explained the relevant theories and the philosophical challenges of the mind/body dualism, present your own philosophical response to this epistemological problem. In your response, consider how/whether your own views are similar to the theories you discussed in parts one and two (2–3 pages.)

Describe a situation where you faced or exhibited resistance to change. What specific tactics and approaches from the chapter on change would have helped overcome this resistance?

Evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive and behavioral theoretical approaches in working with a specific client population.

Introduction

As you think about the essential components of cognitive and behavioral theories, what clients do you envision as best suited for these approaches? If you were a client in one of the videos you have explored thus far, how might you react to behavioral or cognitive interventions? On the other hand, if you were the counselor in one of the videos, how comfortable would you be employing a cognitive or behavioral approach?

In previous Application weeks, you have had the opportunity to observe humanistic, existential, and psychoanalytic theories in action. This week you increase your acumen in cognitive and behavioral theory (CBT) applications by watching media demonstrations of CBT counselors. Remember that all media pieces are 90–120 minutes in length. Be sure to select your media piece early in the week and plan your time accordingly.

Objectives

Students will:

  • Analyze theoretical approaches in counseling sessions
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of counselors’ theoretical approach
  • Analyze cognitive and behavioral theories
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive and behavioral theoretical approaches in working with a specific client population

Use 12-point font and format your paper with regular 1-inch margins. Do not include the essay prompt in your document. It will not count toward the length requirement for your essays.

Essay 1

A group of researchers conducted an experiment to determine which vaccine is more effective for preventing getting the flu. They tested two different types of vaccines: a shot and a nasal spray. To test the effectiveness, 1000 participants were randomly selected with 500 people getting the shot and 500 the nasal spray. Of the 500 people were treated with the shot, 80 developed the flu and 420 did not. Of the people who were treated with the nasal spray, 120 people developed the flu and 380 did not. The level of significance was set at .05. The proportion of people who were treated with the shot who developed the flu = .16, and the proportion of the people who were treated with the nasal spray was .24. The calculated p value = .0008.

For this essay, describe the statistical approaches (e.g., identify the hypotheses and research methods) used in this excerpt from a research study. Interpret the statistical results and examine the limitations of the statistical methods. Finally, evaluate the research study as a whole and apply what you have learned about hypothesis testing and inferential statistics by discussing how you might conduct a follow-up study.

Your essay must address the following points:

Describe the research question for this experiment.
What were the null and alternative hypotheses?
Were the results of this test statistically significant?
If so, why were they significant?
Would the researchers reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis?
Do the results provide sufficient evidence to support the alternative hypothesis?
Was the sample appropriate for this study? Explain your answer.
What are some possible limitations to this study?
Discuss how you would conduct a follow up study to this one. Explain your answer.
Describe the difference between practical and statistical significance.

Essay 2

A researcher has investigated the relationship between IQ and grade point average (GPA) and found the correlation to be .75.

For this essay, critique the results and interpretation of a correlational study.

Evaluate the correlational result and identify the strength of the correlation.
Examine the assumptions and limitations of the possible connection between the researcher’s chosen variables.
Identify and describe other statistical tests that could be used to study this relationship.

Your essay response must address the following questions:

How strong is this correlation?
Is this a positive or negative correlation?
What does this correlation mean?
Does this correlation imply that individuals with high Intelligence Quotients (IQ) have high Grade Point Averages (GPA)?
Does this correlation provide evidence that high IQ causes GPA to go higher?
What other variables might be influencing this relationship?
What is the connection between correlation and causation?
What are some of the factors that affect the size of this correlation?
Is correlation a good test for predicting GPA?
If not, what statistical tests should a researcher use, and why?
