S.M.A.R.T Goals

After reading the PDFs on Goal Setting and Professional Goals and Personalities in this week’s Reading, write your own S.M.A.R.T. goals, discuss why goal setting is important, why they will help you, and how you will achieve them.

Whether you are planning long or short-term goals, you want every goal to be a

SMART one:

Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Timed

[S] Specific

Each goal should be a detailed statement of your desired result. Exactly what is it you wish to accomplish? It is difficult to determine action steps for vague goals and even harder to recognize when they have been achieved.

[M] Measurable

Identify the means by which you will achieve each goal. How will you know when you have reached it? There are two types of goals – performance goals and outcome goals. Keep in mind that you will always have more control over performance than you will over outcome so set performance goals whenever possible.

[A] Action-oriented

Describe your goals using action verbs. What will you do (step by step) to reach your goal?

[R] Realistic

Choose goals that are possible and achievable. Who do you know who has achieved goals similar to yours? Goals set too high will discourage you while goals set too low will not challenge and motivate you.

[T] Timed

Determine deadlines for each of your goals. Deadlines can be flexible and adjusted as needed but deadlines that specify time limits help keep you focused and moving.

Defining and understanding the elements of a group culture is essential to forging a professional identity either online or in person. These elements are important because they reflect how professionals interact, whether online or in person.

An industrial or workplace culture consists of different occupations, roles and statuses. A hospital is an excellent example of a number of people working in close proximity representing different occupational groups. Patients, nurses, health care specialists, surgeons, administrators, security, and support staff groups all function together but may be identified by their equipment, behaviors and language, and the tools and training used to get their work completed.

In this Assignment, you will write a descriptive report about the industry culture of a group of people within the workplace, preferably your career field industry culture. Please note that this focus should not be on racial or ethnic cultures.

Bariatric surgery, which at times is considered an elective procedure, is very popular in the U.S. During their recent monthly meeting, your hospital board of directors has recommended that you start a bariatric surgery center of excellence.

Using the Online library or the Internet, research bariatric surgery. Based on your research and understanding, respond to the following:

• Outline your approach to identifying your target market. Share who will be able to afford this procedure as an elective surgery as well as the medical disciplines involved with evaluation and care.
• Identify and explain the indirect financial benefit from a bariatric center of excellence to various hospital departments, which would result from this hospital based program.
