Below is a list of options from which you are to select a topic for the Week Two assignment. Examine one of the following topics on lifespan development connecting research and life.

 

• What do twin and adoption studies tell us about the effects of nature (i.e., genetic influences) and nurture (i.e., environmental influences) on human development? Select at least one of the main domains of human development (i.e., physical, cognitive, or social-emotional).
• How much credit or blame do parents deserve for the way we are? Select at least one of the main domains of human development (physical, cognitive, or social-emotional) for your answer.
• To what extent are the lives of adolescents and young adults shaped by parental and peer influences?
• Why do we have a need to belong (to affiliate with others)?
• How do our bodies and minds change from early to late adulthood?
• What are the factors that affect our well-being as middle aged and older adults?
• Why are some people attracted to members of their own sex whereas others are attracted to members of the opposite sex?
• How do memory and intelligence change as we age?
• Does an infant’s temperament shape his/her cognitive and socio-emotional development?
• Are babies pre-wired for survival?
• Are adolescents more likely to engage in risk-taking behavior than older adults?
• Can physical exercise affect cognitive performance in old age? Consider the time of occurrence of physical exercise (i.e., earlier in life or during old age) in your answer.
• Are there personality traits related to longevity?
• Does bilingualism improve brain functioning?
• Why do students in the United States tend to under-perform in math and science?

 

Once you have chosen your topic, examine the various theories of human development learned in the course and choose one or two that best assist you to understand the issues involved in your topic.

For this assignment address the following:

 

• Examine various theories of human development, describing relevant terminology, and addressing how the theory assists in the understanding of issues involved in the selected topic.
• Identify and describe at least two domains of human development (physical, biological, emotional, cognitive, and/or social) and how they are impacted by the chosen topic.
• Identify and describe the stages of development that are affected by the chosen topic.
• Describe the cultural and historical perspectives of the chosen topic, demonstrating an understanding of how the topic has been perceived over time and by other cultures. Provide relevant examples.

 

Writing the Assignment

1. Must be two to three double-spaced pages in length (excluding title and references pages), and formatted according to APA style.

3. Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.

4. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.

 

5. Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.

 

1. Conclude with an answer to the selected question. Did the evidence you surveyed answer the question satisfactorily? Including your analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the available evidence.

 

1. If possible, suggest the course that future research should take if answers to the selected question are less than conclusive.

1. It is important that you ask yourself if the articles specifically address the selected topic. It is not always easy to find the right articles. Thus, give yourself some time to search before you finalize your selection.

1. Order the articles in the way you think you will discuss them in your paper. Then develop a summary of the scientific evidence that answers the question you selected.

Write a 1,200- to 1,500-word paper incorporating your analysis with evidence to substantiate your conclusion.

 

Describe your setting by answering the following:

1. How were the people arranged in the physical environment layout of room and seating arrangement)?

 

A.  What is the composition of the group, in terms of

number of people, ages, sex, ethnicity, etc.?

 

B.  What is purpose, mission, or goals of the group? What is the duration of the group (short, long-term)?

 

C.  Did the group structure its discussion around an agenda, program, rules of order, etc.?  Explain items 1, A-C employing sources to support your ideas. (worth .5 point).

3. Did the members share a sense of identity with one another (characteristics of the group-similarities, interests, philosophy, etc.)? Explain; how did the collective group behaviors influence individual attitudes and the group’s effectiveness or behaviors? Provide an overall analysis as it relates to Myer’s and additional sources. 4. Was there any indication that members might be vulnerable to Groupthink? Why or why not?  Explain how your observations relate to research studies on norm formation, group norms, conformity, and/or social influence. Integrate your findings with literature from the textbook (Myers), peer-reviewed journal articles, and additional scholarly sources. (Worth 1 point)
5. Provide in-text citations of 2 peers reviewed references in addition to Myers, to support your key points. (Worth 1 pt.)

Prepare a 2-3 page paper in Microsoft Word to address the following:

• Describe the ultimate goal of the product campaign for the new shampoo.
• Discuss your methods for achieving this goal.
• Identify the components of marketing, pricing, and distribution for the campaign.
• Include in your response a discussion and analysis of the concepts of utility, price elasticity, and demand.

Assignment Guidelines, Part 2

Using Microsoft Excel:

 

• Prepare a graph which illustrates the desired effect of the marketing campaign as a shift in market equilibrium with reference to price and quantity adjustments.
• Prepare another graph to illustrate how a change in consumer utility affects the price elasticity of demand.
• Copy and paste or import these graphs into the MS Word document you prepared in Part 1 of this assignment.

Assignment 3: Parenting Practices Over Generations

You learned in your readings that parenting practices and techniques used to shape child development are influenced by many factors including culture, socioeconomic status, non-normative life events, and cohort effects. To understand cohort effects, consider that the experiences of a child growing up in the 1940s are different in many ways from a child growing up today.

Read the article: Kotchick, B.A. & Forehand, R. (2002). Putting parenting in perspective: A discussion of the contextual factors that shape parenting practices. Journal of Child and Family Studies, 11(3), 255-269.

Synthesize what you learned in your readings as well as the above article to address the following:

• Using the chart/table below, list at least 4 parenting practices of 3 generations. (Note: Parenting practices are not the same as parenting styles, which will be discussed later in the course). You can describe parenting practices of 3 generations of your family members, another family you interview, or general practices of generations based on research you find. For example, how did each generation address issues such as education, extracurricular activities, breastfeeding, sleeping arrangements, religious involvement, etc.?  Include brief demographic information (e.g., sex, age, region of the country) Note: 3 different generations means 3 different time periods, not 3 different people.
• Now review the chart/table and discuss the following:
  • How were the parenting practices similar and different between generations?
  • Explain the concept of cohort effects. What cohort effects (e.g. historical or social events) might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described?
  • Identify and explain contextual factors (other than cohort effects) described by Kotchick and Forehand (2002) that might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described.
  • Why is it important to understand contextual factors, including cohort effects, when researching differences in parenting practices?

A 50-year-old male presents to the community clinic. He has just relocated to the area and has no primary provider. He is a long distance truck driver and requires a physical examination as a requirement for his continued employment.

Physical examination demonstrates a BMI of 33, blood pressure of 180/90 mm Hg, diminished femoral pulses and bilateral varicose veins with 1+ pitting edema in both ankles. He has a 30 year history of smoking two packs of cigarettes per day.

 

Initial Discussion Post:

• Identify the risk factors for cardiovascular problems that need to be modified for this patient.

•Choose two theories, each from a different area (e.g., psychoanalytic, cognitive, and behavioral or social cognitive theories). Briefly describe their main features, explain their major similarities and difference

 

•   Describe and explain at least 3 differences in for-profit entities and governmental agencies that cause them to have different required accounting procedures; include an example of each.
•         explain which regulating authority oversees the accounting rules for governmental vs. for-profit entities.
