What would you have done in this situation in both the roles of the police officer and of the football player?

The following is a true story – and it made national headlines several years ago. A Houston Texans football player and his wife got the call from a hospital in Dallas that his wife’s mother (the football player’s mother in law) was dying and only had a few minutes left to live. They hopped in the car and sped toward the hospital around midnight. Not many cars were on the road. As they were approaching the hospital, they ran a couple of red lights to get them there faster. A police officer saw this, and pulled them over as they were pulling into the hospital. The couple seeing the lights called ahead to the hospital to have a nurse meet them to substantiate their story that their mother was dying and only had a few minutes left.

When the couple jumped out of their car, the police officer drew his gun and told them to get back into the car. He walked over to them and they explained the situation. The police officer said he did not care, and they drove recklessly and broke the law. The nurse substantiated the claim, and the doctor came out as well and substantiated the claim. The police officer called for back-up and told everyone to stay in their car. He gave the football player a ticket. After the process, they ran inside but it was too late and the mother had died.

From your lectures and readings this week, please answer the following:

What type of moral reasoning was the police officer using (from Kohlberg’s stages of moral reasoning–preconventional, conventional, or postconventional)?

What type of moral reasoning was the football player using (from Kohlberg’s stages of moral reasoning–preconventional, conventional, or postconventional)?

What would you have done in this situation in both the roles of the police officer and of the football player?

Was the police officer in the right to hold them and do his job as a police officer to enforce the laws, despite a mitigating circumstance?

Discuss the moral and ethical ramifications of the decisions.

Discuss the importance of identifying the best suppliers by explaining the impact of source selection on supply chain performance.

Your efforts with MLD Hospital have paid off. The corporation has hired SMP and your staff to provide supply chain management consulting services. Your team has begun analyzing the existing processes, and you have been tasked with developing the purchasing policies and procedures with focus on ethics in the supply chain.

Remember: From a supply chain management perspective, a company produces services or products. Clearly, MLD Hospital produces a service. This means that sourcing analysis must consider the raw materials necessary for producing this service (e.g., bandages, needles, blood, and medical equipment).

Using course materials and other resources, develop a paper for the hospital management consisting of the following sections:

  1. Discuss the importance of identifying the best suppliers by explaining the impact of source selection on supply chain performance.
  2. In conjunction with number 1, discuss whether the hospital will insource or outsource its sourcing needs.
  3. Develop a high-level ethics policy for the purchasing department at MLD Hospital, identifying general responsibilities and prohibited behaviors

Discuss the concepts, ideas, and insights that are most valuable in helping you make sense of your project.

The objective of the project is to recommend a wireless solution for a sporting goods company. This is an individual project. You will be required to submit two assignments for the project. Because of this, you may need to spend additional time and effort in Week 3 to produce the proposal which will form the basis for your project.

Plan on utilizing the Writing Source, available under Student Resources under the Course Home tab on the left, or make use of the official style guide entitled, Writing the Research Paper: A Handbook, 6th edition, by Anthony C. Winkler and Jo Ray McCuen. This handbook includes information on the following styles: APA, MLA, CEE, CMS, and Columbia Online (ISBN – 1413001785).

Scenario: The Wireless Technology Company (WTC), a company that assists organizations and businesses with issues involving network planning and design, has hired you as a consultant. The Athlete’s Shack (TAS) is a chain of sporting goods stores. Because TAS has grown in popularity, it now has 10 stores in the area. TAS is considering implementing a wireless technology that will link all of its stores through wireless broadband service, installing WLANs in each store, and providing its employees with iPads for better customer service. TAS is unsure how to start this process. They have asked WTC for help, and WTC has turned to you.

Create a technical, detailed-oriented report for TAS that explains the process of the project. The format of your technical paper should be based on the following:

Table of Contents

The Table of Contents is a key tool. Use it to format and organize your paper. You can use the headings below as the main sections of your paper. If you are unfamiliar with the Table of Contents utility in MS Word, check out the video in the Hub Writing Center, located under the Student Resources tab.

Executive Summary

The Executive Summary includes the specific findings of the research in a short format optimized for a quick read by decision makers. It gives an overview of the organization and summarizes the findings.

Assessment

Evaluate the needs of the business. Identify and clearly state the problems and issues. If there appears to be more than one problem or issue, decide if they are separate or related issues. What are the problems that you are tasked with solving? Provide a detailed analysis of the causes of the problem or issue. Be sure the causes you identify relate directly to the problem or issue. Discuss the concepts, ideas, and insights that are most valuable in helping you make sense of your project. Cite all sources.

Solution

Explore the solutions appropriate to solve the identified problems or issues. Be sure the solutions are logical and based on your analysis. The solutions should effectively treat the problem, not the symptoms. Also, discuss the anticipated outcomes (both positive and negative) of implementing each of the possible solutions you identified. Describe exactly what should be done and how it should be done, including by whom, with whom, and in what sequence. Be specific about your recommended solution and implementation.

Diagrams

A picture is worth a thousand words, especially when you are describing a network solution. Diagrams should add value and not simply take up space.

References

List all references used in your paper. All references must be cited in two places: within the text and on the reference list. Choose references judiciously and cite them accurately. Refer to Writing the Research Paper or use the videos in the Hub Writing Center, located under the Student Resources Tab, to understand how to cite sources appropriately.

Discuss the economic, political, educational, family, and marital systems of a country of your choice.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Briefly discuss the economic, political, educational, family, and marital systems of a country of your choice. Include a response to the following questions in your discussion:

  • If your company was to do business in your chosen country, what kind of social hierarchies and social interactions should you be aware of?
  • What kind of management style would you use to be most effective given the cultural attributes of the country?
  • How would you overcome the barriers to communication?
  • Do you agree with the saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” when it comes to doing business with another country?

Evaluate each country’s similarities and differences.

You are preparing for business negotiations with potential partners from Mexico, China, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). You understand that these cultures are vastly different. They have different business customs, social protocols, and languages. However, they also have a strong relationship with several of your vendors so they may be viable business partners for your hamburger franchise expansion project.

  1. In order to prepare for your first outreach effort with each country, analyze the cultural similarities and differences that exist between the countries and the United States using Geert Hofstede’s 6 Dimensions as discussed in class. Provide a discussion of these comparisons (400-600 words).
  2. Using the United States as a basis for comparison, evaluate each country’s similarities and differences. Use your textbook and the Library to help identify cultural characteristics that will be important during your first meeting with each country. Use a bar graph or table to highlight how the four countries compare to the United States.

Compare scientific inquiry with naive inquiry (conjecture or opinion) commenting particularly on the differences in the quality of data collection and analysis, the way conclusions are drawn, and the precision of theory.

What is the purpose of theory and how does this differ from a conjecture or opinion? Compare scientific inquiry with naive inquiry (conjecture or opinion) commenting particularly on the differences in the quality of data collection and analysis, the way conclusions are drawn, and the precision of theory. Be sure to draw upon the assigned readings and other authoritative sources in providing support for your response, and to adhere to APA format in your post.
