Dear Ashford Expert,

Help!  My best friend had a beautiful baby girl 6 weeks ago, and while I think that this should be a happy time for her, she doesn’t seem to be enjoying it at all.  When I visited the other day, she was wearing pajamas that looked (and smelled) like she’d been wearing them for days.  She kept joking that she’s “no good at the mom thing” yet, and would try to laugh it off, but I’m worried!  She isn’t interested in going out to shop for cute baby clothes, even though I offered to buy, and she says that she’s not ready to come to our “moms group” which meets just once a month for a few hours because she says that she doesn’t want to burden her husband.  What gives?  How can I help her get out of this funk?  Should I be worried about her or her little girl?

–Flustered Friend

Your response should answer the questions asked by “Flustered Friend” and include the following:

  • What is Postpartum Depression?
  • Analyze and comment on at least one of the following major themes: Health and Well-Being, Family and Parenting, Education, Culture, or Gender, as factors influencing the developmental (physical, cognitive and psychosocial) outcomes for the mother, father/partner, and infant.
  • How can Postpartum Depression influence the short- and long-term development of the infant? Be sure to address the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial domains of development.
  • Provide at least one local and one wide-ranging (i.e. internet or phone) resource that someone with Postpartum Depression, or someone with a loved one suffering from Postpartum Depression, can access to find more information and/or get help.  Include all relevant information on how to contact each resource.

Discuss the relevant prices and quantities for the current market situation and identify what you believe is the equilibrium price and quantity.

It is important that you are able to apply demand and supply analysis to events that you experience or read about in your life. Find an article from a newspaper or periodical that illustrates a market. Complete the following steps:

Underline one sentence (market) to be analyzed (the article may discuss several markets).

Identify the good or service.

Discuss the relevant prices and quantities for the current market situation and identify what you believe is the equilibrium price and quantity.

Discuss any shifts that have taken place in the supply or demand curves. Make certain that movements along a curve are not confused with shifts in the curves themselves.

Complete a one page analysis of your article. The answer should be concise and the market you are analyzing should be clearly stated at the top of the page. Be sure to include a proper APA citation for your article.

Analyze each level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and articulate the level which most affects you when making a purchase.

One way that marketers use Maslow’s Hierarchy is by identifying their product with a certain level of needs. Marketers use imagery in commercials to motivate customers to satisfy their needs using the company’s product. A great number of companies position their brands to make customers feel like their product or service will make them belong to a certain group or that they will receive social acceptance and respect. However, there are just as many brands that use pitches for reliability and security to make customers feel the companies’ products cover their basic needs.

From the scenario, analyze each level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and articulate the level which most affects you when making a purchase. Provide support for your rationale by utilizing an example.

What, according to you, could be the three effective strategies to increase health literacy for specific populations?

Health literacy is the degree to which people possess the ability to comprehend and make use of health information about their bodies, conditions, and prescribed medical interventions. The concept of health literacy is of paramount importance as patients are beginning to play increasingly participatory roles in their own healthcare. One concern is the varying degrees of health literacy that patients possess. Some patients will have a high degree of health literacy while others only a minimal level. This has important implications as to how health information is presented at the individual as well as the public level.

Select a chronic disease. Find three websites that provide patient information about the condition, its effects, and treatment.

Note: Read articles that are peer-reviewed to establish authenticity of their data.

Use the required readings and other scholarly sources to answer the following questions:

  • What is the chronic disease that you have selected? Explain. Was it difficult to find quality information about it? Why or why not?
  • What, according to you, is the health literacy level for each of the selected websites? Is it low, medium, or high? Explain your rating system for the three literacy levels. What are the factors that contribute to the literacy level for individuals?
  • What attributes make these sites highly effective in clearly communicating the information necessary for understanding the condition, its effects, and treatment? Would you change or add anything?
  • What is patient empowerment? How does it relate to health literacy?
  • What are the issues involved in the patient or provider relationships when promoting patient empowerment?
  • What, according to you, could be the three effective strategies to increase health literacy for specific populations?
