Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a theme that we see often in the headlines about companies. Companies that fail to address CSR issues are often demonized, while those that embrace CSR are hailed as strong examples of ethical organizations. Many companies view CSR initiatives as a growth opportunity and not just a regulatory requirement. Often a discussion surrounds a company’s ability to tie CSR initiatives to gains in its competitive advantage and access to new business opportunities. Is there anything unethical about a company gaining a competitive advantage and access to new markets with their CSR policies and initiatives? Is dual intent a problem or simply a smart strategic business move?

These videos discuss the importance and usefulness of corporate social responsibility to a company’s overall competitiveness in the marketplace. Use this information along with the other assigned readings and videos to respond to the discussion question.

For your discussion:

Using your current (or a past) company, construct an argument for the company to pursue CSR as a strategic necessity. How would you describe the culture and leadership related to CSR? How does your company define CSR? Are they on the right path or do they need more work? Explain.

Discuss profiling as a legal tool of law enforcement. When might it be acceptable or even necessary to use race in forming a profile of a criminal or criminal activity?

Give specific examples.

Organizations periodically need to create a new position. The need for this new position might be due to:

Changes in the market/industry
Creating an internal position for work that had previously been outsourced
Organizational growth that necessitates the addition of a new specialty or managerial position

Assignment:

You serve as the Human Resource Manager for a health insurance company called Epic Health Solutions. Up until this point, the Claims Department has consisted of a small number of Claims Representatives who reported directly to the Finance Director.

Claims volume has recently jumped, resulting in the hiring of more Claims Representatives. You, as the Human Resource Manager, feel that a new position of Claims Supervisor is needed in order to manage the expanding claims operation.

You have decided to develop a proposal that you will submit to the CEO recommending the creation of this new position and providing the justification.

Conduct academic research and in a 2-3 page report, prepared in APA format with at least two credible references, do the following:

Create an executive summary to describe the new position you will be creating and list the main responsibilities of the position.
Explain how this new position could benefit the company in at least three ways.
Describe how this position will work collaboratively with other positions in the company.
Remember that this is a proposal. Make sure to format your paper properly for your proposal. A proposal is a persuasive document, so make sure to use proper language and tone. Remember, you are the HR Manager and you are writing to the CEO. So use a tone in your proposal that is specific to your audience (the CEO).

Assignment 1: Impersonal Policing vs. Community Policing

The use of squad cars and preventive patrol strategies was associated with a move toward police professionalism and a rejection of favoritism and corruption. After all, if the officer simply patrols the city in his or her car and reacts or responds to crimes as they occur, then there is no opportunity for the officer to indulge in corruption or to develop relationships with the citizenry that could compromise his or her objectivity and impartiality. A police officer dispatched to a dispute between neighbors or neighboring shopkeepers, neither of whom the officer has met, will presumably be able to bring a sense of objectivity to the dispute that one would expect of a neutral, noninvested third party.

Then, the community policing model was introduced. Officers were told to get out of the cars and get to know shopkeepers and residents.

Proponents of community policing argue that the rapport established with friends and acquaintances will allow the officer to resolve a dispute in a quicker, more informal, and less dramatic ways then would be the case otherwise. However, a police officer dispatched to a dispute in which the officer knows one or more of the parties may have a difficult time being neutral and objective. It may be difficult for the officer to tell a citizen who happens to be a friendly acquaintance of the officer that he or she is wrong, or worse, that he or she is going to get a citation or is going to jail.

Using the Argosy University online library resources, find at least two articles on community policing. To read more about community policing refer to the title “Police Executive Research Forum (PERF)” in the Webliography. This is a premier federally funded research organization and think tank incorporated in 1977. Some of policing’s most significant empirical studies, such as the Kansas City preventive patrol experiment and the San Diego experiment on one- vs. two-officer squad cars, were sponsored by the PERF.

• Is there a possibility of corruption when officers develop working or friendly relationships with members of the public as part of a community policing strategy? Why?
• Are officers likely to treat citizens impartially when they’ve interacted informally with them on a regular basis? Or is the pursuit of an impartial, “just the facts, ma’am” kind of relationship with the public a mistake on the part of policing?
• Do impartiality and barrier-of-police professionalism result in a lack of communication with the public, resulting in inefficient problem solving and effectiveness? On the other hand, are officers who have invested time and energy into building personal relationships with people better communicators and, therefore, more effective as police officers?
