	Prepare: Start by reviewing General Education Curriculum found in “Section Five: General Academic Information and Policies” in the Ashford University Academic Catalog, which addresses the core competencies that the general education courses must cover: Applied Ethics, Communication, Information Technology, Critical Thinking, and Quantitative Reasoning.
	Reflect: Think about the core competencies as previously mentioned and ponder on your time taking general education courses. Reflect on the specific courses not associated with your college major and determine the level of new information you have acquired that relates to the core competencies.
	Write: Explain what you have learned about the principles guiding general education from this course and the courses you have taken in the past: What are the most important concepts you have learned (a) from this course and (b) throughout your time as a university student? While there have been numerous attempts over the years to explain leadership and described who a leader actually is some of the more popular and well-known behavioral approaches have argued that leadership is multidimensional. In the mid-1960s to theorist by the name of Blake and Mouton develop a theory they labeled the Managerial Grid. These two theorist argued that there were two primary behavioral dimensions of leaders, one was a concern for production and the other was a concern for people (Johnson, 2005). Based upon these two concerns this model argues that leadership styles are not fixed and not only based upon one’s personality, and the model assumes that a leaders behavior are changing and flexible.

 

For this assignment you will research the managerial grid model. You will take the five grid positions of the grid perform the below listed tasks. Keep in mind that your paper should be 500 words in length, not counting the cover sheet, abstract, and reference section, and the paper should meet all APA standards and requirements.

Scenario for Assignments 1-5

For Assignments 1-5, you are the new budgeting and finance administrator for your local government agency. Your first responsibility is to become familiar with the agency, the budget, programs, and capital projects. As the administrator, you will be responsible for analyzing, examining, proposing, and preparing the agency’s budget for the next five (5) years.

Assignment 1: The Operating Budget

Due Week 4 and worth 150 points

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper, titled Part I: The Operating Budget for the (Selected Agency) in which you separate the content into sections:

1. Provide background information about the agency, mission, goals, objectives, departments, and strategic plan. (Title this section Introduction.)

2. Describe the budget of the agency by addressing the following items: (Title this section Budget Overview.)

   1. Financial Summary, including Revenue and Expenditures

   2. Department Budgets

   3. Funding

   4. Capital Projects

3. Perform a Cost Analysis. (Title this section Cost Analysis.) The costs should include the following:

   2. Step-fixed Costs

   3. Variable Costs

4. Identify and explain one to two (1-2) challenges you will have in managing the budget. (Title this section Budget Challenges.)

5. Recommend two to three (2-3) strategies the agency should review regarding new initiatives and budget cuts over the next five (5) years. (Title this section Budget Recommendations.)

6. Include the agency’s most recent budget or financial plan.

7. Provide the agency’s Website name, URL, and any other sources used to support the assignment’s criteria.

Consider a scenario in which you are a leader working for a major health care organization and have been asked to study the changing demographics in the United States. Based on this scenario, respond to the following:

As you look at the situation in this role, what are the relevant demographic shifts in the United States that you believe should be considered and reported, and why? You should also consider non-Hispanic whites, underrepresented groups, seniors, and other diverse groups.
Next, considering your own geographic region, identify how demographics in race, ethnicity, language, age, and gender may lead to disparities and quality of care.

As leaders in health care become more acutely aware of health disparities, the pressure increases to develop culturally competent organizations. Reflect on this unit’s studies, with special attention to the following:

• The Department of Health and Human Services report Healthy People 2010, including goal number 2, “Eliminate health disparities.”
• The data provided in Figures 1-1 and 1-2, and the related discussion about disparities in health care in Chapter 1 of the Kosoko-Lasaki, Cook, and O’Brien text, pages 1–4.

In one page or less, answer the following questions:

• If cultural competence is a national goal, what factors must health care leadership consider?
• Discuss differences in quality of health care versus unequal treatment. Considering health disparities, what contributing factors do you think are important?

This assignment is a recognition and reflection of substantial demographic shifts and health care disparities in the United States. The second goal of Healthy People 2010 project is to “eliminate health disparities.”

To help you better understand what this goal means, and what it will require to reach the goal, this assignment asks you to work through two examples:

• Select two health disparities from any categories discussed in our readings this week. For each disparity:
  • Describe the issues that you think are involved.
  • Explain what you think might cause the disparities.
  • Describe how these disparities affect, or might affect, different groups in the United States.
• Consider your personal perspective. Describe how your perspective, background, values, and culture influence your view of other groups.

There is a fine line between the health of an individual and the health of a community. Each can influence the other. In this Discussion, you will analyze a case study to determine if members of a family and their community are “healthy,” according to the WHO definition.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review the “Introduction to the Writing Center” guide located in the Week 1 Resources.
• Explore some of the handouts and tutorials relating to tone and scholarly writing as well as the example of “gold star” discussion posts.
• Use these examples as handouts to help you create your first discussion post.
• Then, consider the following scenario with respect to the health of the Davis family and the health of their community:

  Jonathan Davis and his wife, Alexis, are 55 years old and have one daughter, Joanne. Jonathan and Alexis live in the same neighborhood as Joanne, who visits her parents frequently.

  Jonathan has smoked one pack of cigarettes every day for the past 30 years and is 20 pounds overweight. He works in a local plastics manufacturing plant and has a physically demanding job. Alexis enjoys working in her garden and cooking a variety of vegetable-rich meals. Joanne exercises regularly but does have asthma, for which she uses an inhaler when needed.

  The community where Jonathan, Alexis, and Joanne live has extensive walking and biking paths. Joanne makes full use of the paths and bikes on them at least once every week. The community has recently instituted a wellness clinic about three blocks away from Jonathan and Alexis’ house.

  Although the plastics plant pollutes the river, the company plans to install water and air pollution control measures in about 3 years. The plant is currently implementing purification measures for the river.

• What does being “healthy” mean to you?
• Are the members of the Davis family healthy, according to the WHO definition? Your definition?
• Are they living in a healthy community? Please explain.
• What can be done to improve and promote the health of the Davis family as well as the community?
