Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

(Note: Refer to Demonstration Exercise 3 located at the end of Chapter 1 for criteria 1-3.)

Create an argument map based on the influence diagram presented in Case 1.3 and complete all the criteria provided in the exercise, beginning with this claim: “The U.S. should return to the 55- mph speed limit in order to conserve fuel and save lives.”
Include in the map as many warrants, backings, objections, and rebuttals as possible.
Assume that the original qualifier was certainly; indicate whether the qualifier changes as we move from a simple, static, uncontested argument to a complex, dynamic and contested argument.

Apply the argument mapping procedures presented in Chapter 8 to analyze the pros and cons (or strengths and weaknesses) of the recommendations that the United States should not intervene in the Balkans.

Write a one (1) page analysis that uses critical thinking to assess the overall plausibility of the claim: “The conflict in Bosnia is somebody else’s trouble. The U.S. should not intervene militarily.”
Complete an argument map to illustrate your analysis.
Include at least two (2) peer-reviewed references (no more than five [5] years old) from material outside the textbook to support your views. Note: Appropriate peer-reviewed references include scholarly articles and governmental Websites. Do not use open source Websites such as Wikipedia, Sparknotes.com, Ask.com, and similar Websites are not acceptable resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
Use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Draw, PowerPoint, or other graphics program to create the arguments maps for the assignment. Whichever program you use, the graphical maps must be integrated into the Word Document and labeled as a Figure with a number and title. The argument maps are part of the page length.

The ethics of conscientious objection have long been a topic of debate in military ethics.

Explore the moral implications of conscientious objection to military service and conflict, and research and address the following:

1. Define conscientious objection according to the U.S. military.
   • Discuss the circumstances the U.S. military permits conscientious objection to war,  the requirements to declare conscientious objector status, and whether or not servicemen and military draftees can object to serving in some wars and not object to serving in other wars
2. Evaluate whether or not Just War theory applies to the issue of conscientious objection.
   • If a nation, such as the United States, pursues a Just War, what right do its citizens have to object to serving in that war?
3. Evaluate the current U.S. military policy towards conscientious objection. Consider the following questions in your evaluation:
   • Do you believe that conscientious objection is morally permissible?
   • Do you believe the U.S. military should allow for conscientious objection by its service members?
   • How has the Global War on Terror and particularly the War in Iraq (a preemptive war) impacted rates of conscientious objection in the U.S. military?
   • Are there any changes to U.S. policy with regards to conscientious objection that you believe should be changed?

Scenario:

Your family has always been very politically active.  From a young age, you have been politically aware.  When you were young, you worked with your parents as they supported their political party and you even helped during campaigns for the candidates your parents supported.  In college, you were a leader of the organization on campus that was part of the political party you supported.  This could have been the Young Democrats or the Young Republicans or any college group that supported the political party of your choice.  Until your exposure at college, you always supported the same political party as your parents, but then your views began to change and you developed your own  ideas, ideals and expectations.  While you continued to remain politically active, you have become more and more disillusioned with the current major and third parties and movements on the political scene, having studied all thoroughly.  You have come to be completely discouraged by the state of the political process as it pertains to political parties.  In your opinion,  none of the major or third parties truly represents the best interests of the citizens, and you have decided to create your own political party.

Directions. In a 4-5 page Microsoft Word document, include the following:

1. Name your political party and evaluate why you have chosen that name.
2. Create a symbol for your political party and explain why you have chosen that symbol.
3. Create a slogan for your political party and justify why you have chosen that slogan.
4. Develop  a platform for your political party. A platform is a written outline and explanation of what your party believes in and why.  Your party can be a single-issue party, an ideological party, a splinter party, or a regular broad based political party.  Your platform must have at least four positions under the following topics.  Summarize each platform position.
   1. Social Issues
   2. Domestic Issues
   3. Foreign Policy
5. Design a brochure or one-page flyer for your political party that you would hand out to voters to introduce and explain your party.  In this flyer you want to include the essentials of what your party stands for, points of your platform, and  the benefits of joining your party.
6. Project what demographic groups would vote for your political party and why. What demographic groups will your political party reach out to and seek support from?
7. Predict what regions of the country will support your political party and why? Or, what regions of country will your party win? Justify your claims.
8. Compare the areas of support with those of other political parties.
9. What main idea or belief is your political party based upon? Why? For example, in the 2008 election, the Democrats focused a lot on the economy and the war in Iraq.

Imagine you are a recently-hired Chief Operating Officer (COO) in a midsize company preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). You quickly discover multiple personnel problems that require your immediate attention.

1. John posted a rant on his Facebook page in which he criticized the company’s most important customer.
2. Ellen started a blog to protest the CEO’s bonus, noting that no one below director has gotten a raise in two (2) years and portraying her bosses as “know-nothings” and “out-of-touch”
3. Bill has been using his company-issued BlackBerry to run his own business on the side.
4. After being disciplined for criticizing a customer in an email (sent from his personal email account on a company computer), Joe threatens to sue the company for invasion of privacy.
5. One of the department supervisors requests your approval to fire his secretary for insubordination. Since the secretary has always received glowing reviews, you call her into your office and determine that she has refused to prepare false expense reports for her boss.
6. Anna’s boss refused to sign her leave request for jury duty and now wants to fire her for being absent without permission.

As an astute manager, you will need to analyze the employment-at-will doctrine and determine what, if any, exceptions and liabilities exist before taking any action. As you proceed with your investigation, you discover the company has no whistleblower policy.

Is it inevitable that employees will respond to change with feelings of fear? If you believe the answer is yes, state the implications of this for managing strategic change. M4D1: Who blew the Whistle?

What if you have knowledge of serious wrongdoing and are not in a position to stop it yourself? Whistleblowing potentially involves serious risks – to your reputation, career, and financial stability. Before you take this step, you should consider the importance of the issue to you, your intentions, and the risks and benefits of acting or not acting. When planning the action, it is important to review the power structure of the organization, consider timing issues, develop alternatives, and carefully strategize about how you will communicate the issue.

 

When blowing the whistle, you should try to respect the chain of command. That means starting with your immediate manager and then going to the next level if you are not satisfied with the results. If you still don’t get a response, this is the point where you should use the company’s internal ethics reporting system, if one exists. Only after these options are exhausted should you consider going outside the chain of command. And it is only when all else fails that you should consider going outside the company.

 

For your discussion:

 

Locate an article in the EC Library databases that discusses whistleblowing. Discuss the situation that led to an employee blowing the whistle on the organization. Should employees have freedom of conscience? Why or why not? Considering the long-term effects on employees of blowing the whistle, when should they engage in whistleblowing tactics? Identify some reasons why external whistleblowing occurs in any given situation.
